Arpa
More excuses to drag in Syria and Iran. So what? Israel is using U.S money to bomb innocent civilians. Does that give us the green light to hit U.S targets? Yeah! Sure! Keep up building the case against Iran. Remember the non-existent WMD’s in Iraq? Keep it up. May be now we will have an (ill)legitinate case to invade Iran. Remember. Iran is not Iraq, it is not an open flat desert. I have said this before. When the dog senses its impending demise it will soil the entrance of a mosque. Maybe the Israelis are having similar urges. They have bullied the region for too long 60 years. It may be time they once again disperse to Russia, Germany and other places where they “love” them(to death). When will the US realize that they cannot afford to act as a colony of Israel and Turkey, doing their dirty jobs for them? When will the US realize that they are not God assigned international police keeping the "peace" in Nort/South Korea, Iraq, Iran, Israel and... Turkey. Eeverybody and their cousins are using US dollars to build, or for that, destroy their homes when we can't even rebuild huricane devastated homes of our citizens. How stupid can those Texans be? Gamavor, my son is a Texan too. Yet he is not stupid. He can pronounce “nuk-lee-ar”, “ee-rock” and “ee-ron”. Not “nklr”, “I-rack” and “I-ran”. Oddly enough, nobody pronounces the name of that other place as “I-zee-ra-el”. Did you know that in the Muslim culture “azrael” is the angel of death? Is there a reason here? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azrael In the Armenian it is known as “grogh”. Edited July 15, 2006 by Arpa

Verginne
Hm, ever heard of long-range missiles? Tel Aviv (and Ben-Gurion airport) are definitely within reach. If Katyushas have killed 4 people and thrown the entire north of Israel into panic, THUNDER-1 and EARTHQUAKE-1 missiles can turn life in Israel into hell. Pure hell. Well, I would say any more destructive attacks on Lebanon......let 'em loose.
Dave
Armenians don't have anything in Lebanon. When the Civil War stopped, all of the militias were disarmed, except Hezballah. Thus, Hezballah is the only armed group there, along with the Lebanese Army of course. Edited July 15, 2006 by Dave
Sassun
hyethga, the Lebanese Army is severely underarmed, and also it is practically impossible to fight against Israel with a conventional army. The only means that has so far proven effective in the fight against Israel has been guerilla warfare. Indeed just as all of Lebanon has been reduced to a pile of rubble, HezbAllah RESISTANCE fighters continue to pound northern Israel with katyushas. A dramatic update though, Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad al Sanyura just made a public statement accepting to send the Army to the border (Israel's initial and continuing demand throughout the raids) and called for immediate cessation of air raids and a ceasefire through the UN. This was (of course) categorically rejected by Israel, which said it will continue to pound Lebanon. Make no mistake, this is not about the 2 soldiers, I repeat this is NOT about the 2 soldiers, nor is it about HezbAllah. It is NOT even about HezbAllah. This is part of the Bush administration's Greater Middle East Initiative, and this explains the "strange" U.S/British silence. In fact HezbAllah has just scored high (positive) points in the eyes of the Lebanese. The statement by Sanyura followed of course talks in the government, in which HezbAllah has ministers. The official position/decision cannot have been taken without the consent of HezbAllah. This is a very smart strategy and proved to be an effective one. HezbAllah of course assessed the situation very well, it knew that Israel's intentions/objectives were completely different - it knew it from day 1, hence the moderated response that didn't go beyond the Nahariya-Tiberias line. So what we have here, is complete Lebanese unity and unanimity on what to do next, and that is: to stand beside HezbAllah and fight together against the Israeli enemy. What does this mean? This is in fact a first. The army and HezbAllah have never really worked in conjunction. Political differences and HezbAllah's secret functional base have always hindered such a thing. But now it is different. Now Lebanon wages a war of honour and survival. All day we have been watching raid after raid, I just saw scenes on TV of charred bodies of children. Things you will never ever ever see on CNN or any other western media. Not in this lifetime. The war has reached this side, the war has reached 'Christian areas' too. We are being pounded, our army is under heavy fire. The building shook a while ago. The port of Junieh was targeted and it was supposed to be used to evacuate French and American citizens. Israel has lost its mind. It has become crazed. It has unleashed its terror, and we don't know what's going to come next. At the rate this is going I don't even rule out a nuclear strike. I really seriously do not rule it out. I said the ports were going to be struck, no one believed me. Everyone laughed! They said, what is the point, Israel already has imposed a naval siege. The point is, and I don't think anyone in this stupid ignorant world can deny it anymore, Israel's intention from day 1 was not the recovery of the kidnapped soldiers, nor deterrance (what deterrance?), nor the elimination of HezbAllah. As I said HezbAllah is still operating freely in the south. HezbAllah has been low-key since this afternoon, its plans are kept secret, there are no rash threats aired on their TV station, Al-Manar. The Lebanese are united. We can never have a civil war. That is our only consolation tonight. Refugees are flooding to safer (??) areas and people across different sects have opened their doors and homes to these people. Tonight will be anything but quiet. The booms are getting closer and closer by the minute.

irlandahay
I am just wondering if Hizballah consists of Lebanese or Palestinians who were expelled from Israel 60 years ago. If Lebanese want to independant country, how come they tolerate an army of Hizballah they cant control. Today few in Lebanon question why Hizballah decides on "war or peace" and not Lebanese government. From Israeli point of view, any attack eminating from independant country with international border is a declaration of war. I think Israelis trying to achieve a wider goal with their operation in Lebanon and that is to de-legitimate Hizballah in the eyes of Lebanese people and force them out of the border with Israel. They say if Lebanese wont do it, they will create a buffer zone to prevent katusha launches on the Israeli cities on the north. Hiting Beirut is used as pressure to show that there is no other way, I dont think any sane person on either side would want Israelis to take over Beirut once again. Unfortunately it seems civilians are paying heavy price on both sides, obviously Lebanese are in bigger numbers because they cant return fire on the same scale as Israeli army. I just wonder, it seems Hizbollah has a very large support base among Lebanese, is this true Sassun jan? U live there perhaps you can tell us some more about it... looking forward. this is a hard question... the lebanes government is very very complicated... i dont live there but ya lol... see in lebanon, its a law that no moslem is to take power, it has representatives from many ethnic minorities and together they form the government, they have greece armenians lebanese christians and then they have the lebanese moslems... althought they are not in power they consist of the majority of the political parties and majority of the countrey (80%molsem and 10% christian, 10% other) if the government decides to take action (surely the greeks or armenians or christians will do it and have thought of doing it before) the moslem side wich is much more powerful will oppose such actions because they are supposedly fighting for the freedom of theyr moslem compatriots lebanon is indeed very powerless to thwart this insult! hyethga
A quick solution to Israel's aircraft is one battery of SS-300s. Park them next to the border and they won't even make it past it. I'm surprised why Lebanon hasn't at least purchased Soviet-era weaponry. Arpa
==== Make no mistake, this is not about the 2 soldiers, I repeat this is NOT about the 2 soldiers, nor is it about HezbAllah. In fact HezbAllah has just scored high (positive) points in the eyes of the Lebanese. The statement by Sanyura followed of course talks in the government, in which HezbAllah has ministers. The official position/decision cannot have been taken without the My thoughts exactly. This point was brought up before, and I concur. This saga has very little to do with that one or two so called kidnapees. They are PWs (prisoners of war) as this drama is no more or less than an all out war. The attacks are getting closer and closer to Damascus, trying to provoke the Syrian air force to take to the air and give them an excuse to bomb the airport in Damascus. This whole thing was premeditated, they were looking for an excuse(kidnapped Israelis), to give them and their allies an immediate cause to invade Damascus and Tehran. Remember the manufactured stories of WMD’s in Baghdad? And now we hear about Damascus’ patronage of Hezbollah, Iranian missiles and technician soldiers. Except that, it seems those idiots underestimate Damascus and Tehran, assuming, as they did in the case of Saddam that the people would rise and welcome the “allied forces” waving the Star of David and the Star Spangled Banner. How many Baghdads, Damascuses, Tehrans, Pyongyangs, Seouls, Khartoums, Mogadishus … can the allies handle. Not to mention Ankara when it goes up in flames. When will we see bombs dropped over Damascus and Tehran? Ss mentioned before; Israel has existed for about 60 years. Is that 60 years too many? Those idiots! They base their policy on prophecies of a “promised land” written 3000 years ago. They may have forgotten that very few, if any people (Hi Sassun!) believe in those fables. Of course. Our fearless leader who knows no more history than what he learned (did he?) in Sunday School…! He may also think that Yerevan is a suburb of Ankara, just as Beirut is a suburb of TelAviv. Sassun
The political system is 50% Christian - 50% Muslim (including Druze). The demographics is a lot different though, around 80% Muslim - 20% Christian, though official estimates are around 60%-40%. Hyethga, because until now it used to rely on Syria's own Soviet batteries! Israel is definitely committing war crimes. You have not seen anything. Even the few pictures of dead people that have made it to western media are not 1/10ths as gruesome.
Arpa
Let Jews and Arabs kill each other. It is not our war and has never been. Pox on both of their houses indeed. They are bot Semites, whatever the h... it may mean. They both speak the same "dialect". They can sink their fangs in each other till the cows or the dogs come home Dear Gams, of course it is not our war. But can you see that Yerevan is, historically speaking, only one country removed from the arena, practically speaking, our front/back yard? Speaking of Texas, it is not any different from a war in Oklahoma, Utah or New Mexico. After all, Armenia is a Middle Eastern country, only a few hunderd miles removed. There is no escaping. No matter how many times we may say we are “Europeans”. With the implications of Syria, Iran and who knows who else, when all these are sucked into action, and, by a domino effect Turkey. Can you see how it is relevant to our destiny? Is Yerevan ready when the entire region goes up in flames. Does it have a plan? Or will we, once again be caught with our “vartiks” down to be raped over and over again, be it by Turks, Kurds, Vratsis, Iranians or Azeris?
