Bianca, Yerevan is even better now than when Anahid was there or when I was there. There are real good restaurants and night life now. You can find the best international stores and luxury hotels in Yerevan. Don't miss Dilkijan and vicinity, high in the mountains. The Turenkjian hotel there is superb. Yet realize with all the luxury, there is unfortunately still much poverty in the backwaters of Armenia. Hopefully this can be alleviated soon.

Hey Tigraneus Basileus, I am an Armenian by heritage but a white Anglo by socialization. Until I was in my late teens, I knew just one Armenian family other than my relatives who lived about 100 miles away. We grew up among odars. From my perspective, your comments do not ring true. Hey Tigranes Basileus, It is not only Greeks like you that get treated poorly. My Armenian in-laws treated me like a leper and I am 7/8 Armenian 1/8 Assyrian. They thought that I was not good enough for their daughter, since I am not a doctor, lawyer or other professional.

Tigraneus Basileus, Do not pay attention to Arpa. Arpa sits at one extreme end of the Armenian spectrum. Arpa is an Armenian fanatic. Anahid, "Blood" or genetics has little to do with pride or association. I know of Armenian pesas and odar wives of Armenians who are more "Armenian" than full-blooded Armenians (or 7/8 Armenians like myself). I know 1/2 Armenians who totally Armenian in their outlook. Raised in the bosom of the Armenian Church, they have been totally acculturated in both the positive and negative aspects or Armenian culture. Being raised as an "Anglo" Protestant, I have the demeanor of a odar. Even my Catholic European friends say that they overlook my obvious Armenian looks and consider me a Northern European Protestant. It has to do with the acculturation process. My nephew is 1/2 Armenian but totally a Jew. His parents are divorced and he was raised as a super-Jew at Jewish schools. He has little awareness of his Armenian heritage. Edward, The present age is like no other we have seen. The young are bombarded with a global culture which is diametrically opposed to traditional Armenian cultural norms. The "genie is out of the bottle" and there is no way we are going to get him back into the bottle. What about the prospect that a little flexibility would have saved the nation from the situation it finds itself in today? If the Armenian nobles had not exterminated hundreds-of-thousands Armenian Paulicians and Tondrakians, we would have been less vulnerable to being run over by invaders.

What is missing from the argument here is the premise that the rigidity of Armenian cultural norms drive many of the young out, and into marrying odars. When an object will not bend it will break under pressure. Same for Armenian cultural norms.
