since we are discussing matsun...does anybody living around the tri-state area know who is behind "Erivan" matsun company. My west-coast friends were pleasantly surprised to know that here we have matsun company actually named after an Armenian city (of course old spelling is bad) but on the west coast till this day no single armenian matsun company has that (to my knowledge) where so many Armenians live.

Proud why do you think parisians preserved their buildings? nobody is arguing for demolition of old beautiful buildings...in fact that is what exactly is going on in yerevan today! I already read few articles and not just building but the elimination of green space in the city is another big big issue...and instead they seem to be putting up these ugly outdated things. And if you look through a western publication today ( i am looking at architectural record magazine right now), the whole issue is on preserving green space, putting up roof gardens on top of building and building energy sufficient building (green buildings)...so you see it's not about glass and steel...

when you say excellent home grown architecture...are you referring to the soviet style buildings? also, there was no mentioning of copying foreign styles (although that might be very authentic in a place like Armenia). Nonetheless, the materials that you are referring to be used...most probably will come from foreign places....yes you got to accept...foreign places make BETTER materials these day (for the exception of tufa), there is nothing authentic in the armenian materials...they are the same bad quality cement blocks that are still being used after the horrible experience with the 1988 earthquake.

I think this is because smoking has "mysterioulsly" been linked to masculinity amongst Armenians, well as far as my observation is concerned, while in reality it is a sign of ones insecurity (perhaps desire to fit in or look cool) and complete disregard of one's physical health (as we all know). Now, can the ROA finance a campagne to reverse this mysterious understanding of masculinity, perhaps link the Armenian masculinity more with rocket science or mountain biking...of course not...since some the ROA officials a) smoke themselves or own the monopolistic/oligarchistic tobacco import/export, sales markets. This is the going to be a hard one...in any case. Also the percentage of women should be higher, since most women in armenia don't admit to smoking because it is considered inappropriate for a woman.

Euro, Armenians in Kuban region of Russia have a long history, for about 300 years. This roughly goes back to Western Armenians escaping the Ottoman Empire and Katherine the Great wanting these people to settle in Kuban so it would prosper agriculturally. In fact, land was extended to Armenians so they would settle in Kuban. I don't know much about this page of the Armenian history but I it would be interesting to explore further.

JohnG, if you are in LA, then definately give cash, that's the inter-community custom there, it helps people pay for their wedding. All Armenians in LA bring cash.

Armenia is pretty monoethnic. Besides the known minorities - Yezidi Kurds, Malakans (Russian descent), Assyrians, Greeks which together comprise about 5-6% the most, the rest of the people are Armenian. There are lots of people who have Russian, Ukrainian, etc grandparent or a parent, but they still consider themselves Armenian. Irregardless of their ethnicity, all the people meaning minorities inclduding are Armenian citizens. hope this helps.
