a more interesting question is why does armenian have two words for the color white. but the word jermak seems to have poetic undertones to it, spitak to me always sounded straighforward white. For example, it's nicer to say "Nra mazere jermakel ein" as opposed to "Nra mazere spitakel ein".

Harut, allow me to disagree, there are mountains in Armenia covered with lush forests, in fact rare occurence in the world, I have heard foreigners being surprised to see this in Armenia. I'll try to look for pictures.

how about Leran gagat Sari gagat also, i think irregardless of the origin of the meaning of the word SAR, today SAR is referred to as for the whole thing, not just the tip of the mountain, I doubt that the whole armenian nation would want to alter this definition today.

interesting... when I was a kid growing up in Armenia I was pre-occupied with the difference between LER and SAR. My parents always explained that Ler is normally referred to a lower mountain and SAR is referred to a high mountain like Ararat is definately a SAR, they used to tell me. Now considering the Eskimos have several hundred words for SNOW, Armenians being mountaneous people naturally should have few words to describe different types of mountains, so I doubt that there is a loanword involved. Also, Russian - Gora, Gori (plural) might be related to the Sanskrit

ok, perhaps i can be of help, my grandpa is parska-hye and according to him it is Shah Abbas, this is the Shah that forcefully moved the Armenians to Persia and built New Julfa or something like that for them, very important figure for the Armenians. I don't think they go hand in hand. I read in one book that people who try to make their partner really jealous are indeed seeking more attention from their partner. And I honestly don't think you can love somebody who you don't trust, you can be smitten but sooner or later the mistrust is going to win over.

my 2 cents on this is that Armenian non-Armenian most men who want to settle down do want a woman who is going to cook/clean/laundry/kids and make a home. Men have similar mentalities irregardless of culture.

this is only with araba-hyes though, parska-hyes don't think this way about the people of their "host" country, I have yet to see an Iranian Armenian put down Iraq so much because Iran was in war with them.

this is not about taking sides or making moral judgments...more about the degree of passion and zeal than Armenians AS A WHOLE put into this conflict... I think that's all hovan was trying to say.

I think hovan's statement meant as a sarcasm to stir away your one-way approach to this whole issue. Once again, this view point DOES NOT represent Armenians as a whole, but mostly people who have settled in Syria, Lebanon, other Arab countries surrounding after the genocide, hence you have developed a deep empathy towards everything Arabic, its normal and natural but it definately does not represent the view point of Armenians around the world. Do you think 800,000 Armenians in Moscow really care about Lebanon, but I bet they would act this way if there was an offensive against Russia.

Did you know that Georgians are the only people in the world who have it reversed. Mom=Dedi Dad=Momi Dedi in fact has been widely used by Georgian Armenians and is used in for example "Pepo".

you probably know, but Peter Balakian's "Black Dog of Fate" is an incredible autobiographical novel describing exactly what you're looking for. Another good book is Henri Verneil's "Mayrig" although this one deals with the French experience rather than American.

the thing is I am so freaking tired of explaining everyone who Armenians are. I normally just cut it short to Russian in most cases as I am Eastern Armenian and have Russian accent when speaking English. Is anybody as frustrated as I am?

I think every Armenian will have a different opinion about these questions. But since you are only concentrating on Western Armenian, then your job is easier. By the way, Father Mesrop is an excellent source for this kind of research, I lived in Oakland myself and went to that church quite often on Spruce Street.
