vava
I disagree with his POV. Regardless of the nature of editorial opinion (be it an article, a caricature, or other), nothing justifies the violence this issue has incited. If religiously believing persons have truly been hurt - let them publish a counter piece and initiate a civil discussion. How many people are they hurting by burning down embassies? Sip
... How many people are they hurting by burning down embassies? Ironically enough, they are hurting themselves a lot more than anyone else by attacking embassies. It's like you are mad at the post office for distributing Playboy and you go and burn down your own mail box in the front yard.
vava
Give me a break - they're not even that bad! If they published a cartoon portraying Jesus with horns and a cleft tongue, screwing the virgin Mary while sniffing coke, even the fanatical Christians in the American south wouldn't resort to that level of violence (and that's saying something!) Zartonk
I just saw a glimpse of them on IRINN (or Cleric Central). The twelve or so depictions of Mohammed are your stereotypical terrorist: Bearded, in rags and unclean. Also on the same Network, I heard amongs chants of death to America and Isreal (I guess that agenda fits in with any occasion) that the government of Iran has joined the rest of the Muslim realm in protest by officialy closing all trade with of Denmark. At the same time, huge riots ranging from Malasia to the blood red "bird" of the EU are on the way in response to the aforementioned CARTOONS, which are, by the way, not too different in nature and offense to the almost daily appearances of the "cannibal rabbis" of numerous papers. Im against disrespect to the belief of others, but I am also for one right to express as he pleases and a sense of humor. It really saddens and frightens me to be reminded of just how unshakeable a cancerous position of religon is to one-sixth of our world population. Takoush
Gams: I just wanted to let you know that all the muhammedans (arabs) are not like turks. To remind you Gams, that after the genocide all the arab countries felt sorry for us and they've opened their doors wide open to us Armenians. They felt sorry for us more so; because Turkey was in Egypt for instance, for 75 years and they were also very badly mistreated by the turks as well as the Syrians and the others too. So basically what I'm trying to say Gams is that they're not like the turks at all; plus we've had much fortune living side by side with them and in their country, you see? Yes, they can be quite hot blooded and fanatics when it comes to their religion and their own kind; but they're not all that bad really. I personally don't dislike Arabs, quite the contrary; I am more compelled with power hungry and money hungry Jerusalem and the Bush's regime than anyone else. Jerusalem's murderous behaviour against the Palestinians brought on all this plus the U.S. supporting Jerusalem and disregarding all else. Anyhow, these are my honest thoughts. So my dear you say they are not like this? But who in his right mind will blow up an embassy for some cartoons published in some paper. Who in his right mind will kill a catholic padre just because of cartoons? It is not only Moslems that are like that. You remember few years ago David Coresh of Wako, Texas? It has nothing to do with religion. It has to do with psychosys.
Arpa
These cartoons have served their intended purpose to a tee. Tease the dog to show its true nature, its fangs. And our fearless leader GWB gums that inane cliche of:"Islam is a religion or compassion, tolerance and peace", like my a** is where food enters the digestive system. Next, someone should compose a cartoon to show the world how those sons of Abraham are a peaceful people when that "book" they claim to have written uses the word "war" 5000 times and "love" only a couple of times, and the context of carnal love or love of a husband to a wife or visa versa. I'm not up to date with the news lately and I truly didn't know about the embassy being blown up nor a catholic priest being killed by these leftists. Then I withdraw what I said; and obviously it's not right at all under any circumstances to do all that for some cartoon pictures, even if it is in bad taste for them. Sasun
Sorry Sasun, but what respect they expect if I may ask??? You see that even to this day some Turks pride themselves with the Armenian Genocide saying that that way it was proven that their Allah is greater than our Christ. Such animal primitivism shouldn't be tolerated. On a second thought, what is THAT wrong with this cartoon? How many times the religious symbols of Christianity have been ridiculed, cartooned and sometimes outright offended? Isn't it part of the freedoms the western society enjoys? Why I can criticize "my" President be it Bush, Kocharian, or Putin and why Moslems can't do the same in their countries? And finally why the followers of Allah (a.k.a. Turks) want to join Europe and why when Moslem emigrants get in the USA or Europe they suddenly feel very free and fully take advantage of the democracy, which is lacking in their Moslem countries, but even then they don't want see their former countries changed? Basically, what I am saying, one should have respect for other religions not because the followers are behaving, but just for the sake of peace and for the sake of the idea of Sacred. Even if we disagree with their religion 100%. So what many Muslims are mad and fanatical? That does not mean we should say and do things that are blasphemous to them. For a religious person there is nothing more insulting than insulting their sacred. (BTW, for non religious people too insulting what they hold sacred is extremely insulting. For example, among Armenians and many others swearing at one's mother is extremely insulting while among American's that would be viewed not so insulting and somewhat weird). Stormig
Under normal conditions, those people that set fire in embassies or killed a Catholic priest would have continued to not be able to tell their elbow from their arses. What has happened is a result of provocation by Muslim groups in Europe who have probably come to the point of losing it upon not getting the results they wanted. And the sensitivity goes two-fold - one because they feel their prophet was insulted and the other because drawing the prophet is prohibited. Muslim courts would often entertain miniatures and the like even if they preached to the commoner that drawing was a sin, but even under such circumstances the prophet would be illustrated without face. The so-called "rationale" here is that drawing the prophet could lead to idolatry (as if their Ka'aba is not a shrine). Of course, applying that to a caricature reminds me of that joke someone (Sip?) had posted - "You may not have sex while standing, for it may lead to dancing." Muslims and especially their clergy have a superiority complex they won't admit to even themselves. Theirs is the last book, theirs is the last prophet, theirs is "the right, the complete" religion, theirs is returning to the lifestyle of Abraham and Moses and Jesus which others corrupted because they were incapable of holding onto something, damn them. No wonder they feel they have a right to tell people how to go about their business in their countries, and no wonder they are so averse to integration with the host population's convictions, incapable of turning their heads when they see something that offends them, and not just for their prophet but most things they hold "sacred." Thus they'll burn embassies and they'll kill priests and they'll shoot at those that try to "reach at their flag" on the Green Line instead of hoisting a fresh, non-faded one. The irony is that the caricatures are being proven right. And it's even more telling that they can't tell between demanding apologies from a newspaper and from a head of government. I propose that caricatures featuring all prophets be published from now on. Maybe Jesus or Zoroaster could be asking Mogamboman what went wrong, with fires and arms and legs in the background. On a different note - sensitivities are not confined to Muslims only. Remember the case of the Austrian publisher with Greece? Of course, the course followed and the end result differ tremendously, there's no doubt about that. http://www.news24.com/News24/World/News/0,...1689434,00.html Jesus cartoons get the OK 13/04/2005 21:44 - (SA) Athens - A Greek court has allowed a controversial Austrian book of cartoons portraying Jesus as a marijuana-smoking hippy to go on sale after it was previously banned for blasphemy. Austrian cartoonist Gerhard Haderer initially had been found guilty and given a six-month suspended prison sentence in January for maliciously insulting the Orthodox Church and his book The Life of Jesus was banned in Greece. The book, which had initially gone on sale in Greece in 2002, but was pulled from stores just days later after pressure from the country's powerful church, portrays Jesus as a hippy surfer who enjoys smoking marijuana with friends and celebrities, including Jimi Hendrix. On Wednesday, an Athens appeals court ruled the book was not "blasphemous" and overturned the cartoonist's previous conviction. Haderer had the support of many of the country's top cartoonists, who said the earlier court decision harmed the image of their country. About 1 000 people had signed a petition, demanding the immediate lifting of the ban. - Sapa-dpa
Arpa
I couldn't have said it better. Stormig; The irony is that the caricatures are being proven right. And it's even more telling that they can't tell between demanding apologies from a newspaper and from a head of government. Speaking of prophets, if this is not the perfect definition of “self fulfilling prophesy”, what is? Stormig; Muslims and especially their clergy have a superiority complex they won't admit to even themselves. Theirs is the last book, theirs is the last prophet, theirs is "the right, the complete" religion, theirs is returning to the lifestyle of Abraham and Moses and Jesus which others corrupted because they were incapable of holding onto something, damn them Has it not been proven that the so called “superiority complex” is in fact an attempt to cover one’s sense of “inferiority complex”? Yet, as we speak they are coming on the news channels saying that the west does not know, understand (the meaning of) Islam. Yeah right! Tell us! Hopefully this will be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. That after all the “smoke” dissipates they will sit down and contemplate as to why the west has this “picture” of them when every act of violence is preceded or accompanied by shouts of Allah and Mohammed. Not to forget that some of our nuts also invoke the name and “love” of God and Jesus when “hatefully “murdering people they deem to be blasphemous, like abortion doctors etc. As to killing of that Catholic priest in Trabzon, how soon we forget that in 1915, of the some 400 murdered cream of our intellectuals about one third were priests or otherwise men of the cloth.
