Arpa
Off-the-cuff, I would argue that these are female, rather than male, inventions. Many women do feel "ill" right before or at the start of their period. Belly cramps, bloated feeling, headache, sleepiness, hunger, irritability. On the other hand, it's also fair to argue that regular (as opposed to irregular) menstruation should in fact be seen as a sign of health, rather than illness, since only healthy women menstruate regularly. Only a mother and FATHER would know what good news it is that their daughter is "healthy". Spwaking of which. Coming back to that "altar" ban. One wonders if those (married) priests view their mothers, wives, sisters and daughters as "unclean"? How does one define hipocrisy? Armenak
Masturbation is considered a sin in many religions, and we know how much men need that. In some religions, a bit of their penis is even cut off against their will. I would argue that the restrictions on men and women are very similar, with only one difference: it's the men who make the decisions (even if these are as torturous for them as it is for women), not the women. Harut
The notion of menstruation, or a woman menstruating, representing impurity or dirt is probably as old as mankind itself. It's also common in Christianity. In the Armenian Church, for instance, you are not allowed to be baptized if you are menstruating, since you are considered to be "keghtot." i'm just speculating here, but the origins of this practice (or the lack thereof at certain times) and the terminology for it can very well have practical connotation than spiritual/religious/discriminatory... i mean, which priest wants to have his holly water get bloody during the service... so they had to come up with an excuse to discourage it... just like whole bunch of other discouragements that exist (spilling the salt, breaking the mirror, etc...) I have two objections. Firstly, the fact that a menstruating woman is considered "impure" or "dirty" (going back to the days of Adam and seductive Eve). Secondly, the fact that the Armenian Church, as far as I know, no longer bathes its to-be-baptized subjects. There is thus no reason (except perhaps something in the holy scriptures that I'm sure Arpa can dig up) to continue using the word "dirty" and disallowing menstruating women from getting baptized, among other churchly activities. Gospel of Mark Ch. 5 25] And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, [26] And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, [27] When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. [28] For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. [29] And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. [30] And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? [31] And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? [32] And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. [33] But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. I would argue that the restrictions on men and women are very similar, with only one difference: it's the men who make the decisions (even if these are as torturous for them as it is for women), not the women. Which reminds me, speaking of burqas and male desires.. http://hyeforum.com/index.php?s=&showt...ost&p=56134 But you are forgetting that it's allowed for men to go to prostitutes if they have those special needs. It's a forgivable sin. You know that story about Maria the Copt and Muhammad? She was a European gift to Muha from the Byzantine king. Some gave rugs as presents and some gave women, same difference I guess.... Well Muha had a dozen wives at the time but after seeing the fair skin and fair hair maiden she quickly became his favorite and he visited her more often than other women. His other wives became jealous (because he is just a gem of a husband to begin with) and hated the Christian slave. So one day when the main wife went shopping Muha and Maria did the dirty in her quarters, she came back early and saw them having fun. She became so angry and cried and other wives were furious. So Muha felt so guilty and bad that he retired into some quarters and sat there so upset with himself that he made his wives angry. But to his rescue came Allah, and he said to him not to feel bad, it is the women's fault. They should mind their own business and not talk trash about Maria, it's them who have the serpent’s tongue..... So he felt better right away, because Allah was on his side (as if it was ever a question that God appears to men when it's most convenient) and went out to tell his wife that because of THEIR behavior he will punish them to teach them a lesson by having more fun with Maria. I mean, isn't it great, he cheated, he womanized and it's the women's fault because they were not acceptant of his holiness. Tsk tsk, those evil women. If this isn't a modern story of men that commit adultery. The bible laid the groundwork for the men of today, no wonder so many religious men don't want to abandon those marginal traditions. Anileve
The penis is mightier than the soul. When the man has sexual urges, it then becomes the will of Allah/Jehovah/God/Him, and the slight 'impurity' of the 'love-juice' is overlooked. Sexual hypocrisy, if you will. Percisely since he has natural urges, understood by God, it is the women who must cover themselves up not to arouse, it's the men who must control themselves. In Islam a woman is also not allowed to speak to the men in the room, because a woman's voice is really seductive and that may arouse as well making men do things that are forgivable by God. "It is likely that Judah perceived Tamar as one of the sacred prostitutes. The Hebrew words for a sacred prostitute (kedeshah, sacred woman) and a normal prostitute (zonah) are both used in this story. In Israel, prostitutes were required to cover their faces at all times." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamar_%28Bible%29 Tamar was sentenced to being stoned to death until they discovered that Judah was the one that got her pregnant then she was forgiven. This is the very reason that women are to veil their hair. The "shine" of the hair fabric is described as the strongest stimulant, next to voice, face, hands, feet, skin, body, etc. I don't know the specific sura, but I know it exists. It is basically sexual piety by maintaining an extremely perverse mentality at all times. Cover up, so you wont arouse and I wont have to think of it. It is also interesting that you mentioned kedeshah. The Semitic ideal of the sacred goes right along with sexuality.

MosJan
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq offered money for the murder of a Swedish cartoonist who recently produced images deemed insulting to Islam, according to a statement carried by Islamist Web sites Saturday. In the half hour audio file entitled "They plotted yet God too was plotting," Abu Omar al-Baghdadi also promised a new offensive in Iraq during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. On August 19, the Swedish newspaper Nerikes Allehanda published a cartoon by Lars Vilks that depicted the Prophet Mohammed with a dog's body. Muslims in Sweden rallied outside the newspaper's offices to demand an apology, and the governments of Iran and Pakistan lodged formal protests with Sweden, but other than that the reaction to the cartoon was muted. That response is in contrast to last year's fiery protests that erupted in several Muslim countries after a Danish newspaper published 12 cartoons of Mohammed. Islamic law is interpreted to forbid any depiction of the prophet for fear it could lead to idolatry. In the tape, al-Baghdadi also named other insurgent groups in Iraq that al-Qaeda was fighting and promised new attacks, particular against the minority Yazidi sect that was recently devastated by massive car bombs. "We are calling for the assassination of cartoonist Lars Vilks who dared insult our Prophet, peace be upon him, and we announce a reward during this generous month of Ramadan of $100,000 for the one who kills this criminal," the transcript on the Web site said. Islam, along with all those so called religions should be banned! http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/africa/11/30...ears/index.html KHARTOUM, Sudan (CNN) -- Hundreds of protesters brandishing swords and sticks gathered outside Khartoum's presidential palace Friday to vent their anger against a British teacher jailed for allowing children to name a teddy bear "Mohammed." An undated amateur photo of Gillian Gibbons, who has been found guilty of insulting religion. About 600 Islamic demonstrators piled out of mosques, chanting: "By soul, by blood, I will fight for the Prophet Mohammed." Some of the protesters demanded the teacher's execution, according to The Associated Press. The agency reports that some chanted: "No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad." The decision by a Sudanese court to jail Gillian Gibbons late Thursday was widely criticized outside Sudan as too harsh, with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband saying he was "extremely disappointed" the charges were not dismissed. Abdul-Jalil Nazeer al-Karouri, a prominent cleric and hardliner, told worshippers Friday at the Martyrs Mosque: "Imprisoning this lady does not satisfy the thirst of Muslims in Sudan. But we welcome imprisonment and expulsion," according to AP. But he did not urge worshippers to protest. In leaflets distributed earlier this week by Muslim groups and seen by CNN, the protesters promised a "popular release of anger" at demonstrations called for Friday. The leaflets condemned Gibbons as an "infidel" and accused her of "the pollution of children's mentality" by her actions. The teacher was convicted of insulting religion but cleared of two other charges of inciting hatred and showing contempt for religious beliefs, Ali Ajeb, her lawyer said. Ajeb said they were planning to appeal the sentence, which runs from the date she was first detained, November 25. Gibbons, 54, is being held in a woman's prison in the Omdurman district of Khartoum and she will be deported at the end of her prison term, British consular officials in the city told CNN. Embassy staff said they were giving the teacher, from the northern English city of Liverpool, full consular assistance. Watch a report on reactions to the verdict » Omer Mohammed Ahmed Siddig, the Sudanese ambassador to Britain, was summoned for a second time to meet with the British foreign secretary late Thursday after the court's ruling. Miliband also spoke to the Sudanese acting foreign minister for 15 minutes on the telephone during the meeting, the British Foreign Office said. "Our priority now is to ensure Ms. Gibbons' welfare and we will continue to provide consular assistance to her," Miliband said in a statement. The Foreign Office said there would be further talks with the Sudanese government Friday. Gibbons was arrested Sunday after she asked her class of seven-year-olds in Khartoum to name the toy as part of a school project, the Foreign Office said. She had faced charges under Article 125 of Sudan's constitution, the law relating to insulting religion and inciting hatred. She could have faced a sentence of 40 lashes, a fine or jail term of up to a year, according to the Foreign Office, which expressed Britain's dissatisfaction with the verdict. British newspapers condemned Gibbons' conviction, with The Daily Telegraph calling for the recall of the British ambassador from Khartoum and sanctions against the heads of the Sudanese government. In an editorial the tabloid newspaper, The Sun, said Gibbons' jailing was a "grotesque insult to Islam" and called Gibbons "an innocent abroad." Four vans filled with riot police were stationed outside the courthouse at Thursday's hearing, but there were no signs of street disturbances or protests. Staff from Gibbons' school, including Robert Boulos, the head of Unity High School, were present. Boulos said he was "horrified" when he found out it was a member of his own staff who complained, not a parent as originally thought. Defense counsel later confirmed that the complaint came from Sarah Khawad, a secretary at the school. Gibbons has been working at the school -- popular with wealthy Sudanese and expatriates -- since August, after leaving her position as deputy head teacher at a primary school in Liverpool this summer, Boulos said. He said Gibbons asked the children to pick their favorite name for the new class mascot, Edited November 30, 2007 by Arpa

Arpa
DejasVu all over again. Only this time with a twist. See highlights below. ==== Middle East Angry Over New Book on Islam Aug 20, 2008 "Turkish news agencies have attacked the author as being a Christian Extremist." AKRON, OHIO -- Markus Aurelius' explosive new book, "Bleeding for Allah: Why Islam will Conquer the Free World, What Americans Need to Know" has Muslims from Turkey to Saudi Arabia blistering with rage. The new book, which took more than four years to research and write, scrutinizes Islam from its very birth. The Koran, the holy book of more than one billion people worldwide, is systematically analyzed by the author to reveal the true nature of its message. "Bleeding for Allah" goes the full distance in detailing the uncomfortable and painful truth of that message. Turkish news agencies have attacked the author as being a "Christian extremist" (Ankara News) and of "promoting culture wars" (Jurnalturk). Dozens of websites in Turkey, Syria and Saudi Arabia have condemned the work as nothing more than propaganda of the Bush administration. The Turks appear particularly sensitive to Aurelius' gruesome account of the Turkish propagated Armenian Genocide. The Turkish news outlets reiterate that Islam is only a religion of peace. Although touted as a peaceful religion and Islamic terrorists dismissed as misguided fanatics, it is clear that the very words of Allah, as voiced through the Archangel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad, are anything but peaceful. Markus Aurelius' breakthrough work, in clear and concise fashion, gives countless examples of Koranic verse that readily demonstrates its militancy and violence. While Aurelius is quite sensitive to the influence of cultural bias on interpretation, he finds it extremely difficult to dismiss the troubling tenor of so many of the Koran's verses, such as: -Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends.-- Koran, 5:51 -Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and deal sternly with them. -- Koran, 66:9 -When the sacred months are over, slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them. --Koran 9:5 In an effort to further reduce cultural bias but still illustrate the militancy of Islam, "Bleeding for Allah" includes a unique comparative analysis of specific words between the New Testament and the Koran. For example, the words "punishment" and "torture" appear 600 percent more in the Koran while the word "love" appears 500 percent less. Additionally, Aurelius carefully examines the Prophet Muhammad's life, including the gruesome details of his ruthless rise to power in the early seventh century. "The shrewd Prophet creatively found divine words of support from Allah for his banditry and mass murder," Aurelius writes. "Sadly, more than one billion people believe those words today." Americans are woefully in the dark regarding the Koran, but few have taken the time to read it. The author challenges the American public to examine the Koran and draw their own conclusions. ### Keywords: Islam,Muslims,Muhammad, terrorists,Turkey,Saudi Arabia, genocide, Religion » General http://www.pressrelease365.com/pr/religion...merica-2712.htm

Some critics believe that this story was added to The Book of One Thousand and One Nights by one of its European transcribers, Antoine Galland, an 18th-century French orientalist who may have heard it in oral form from an Arab story-teller from Aleppo. However, Richard F. Burton claimed it to be part of the original Book of One Thousand and One Nights.
