Arpa, It is up to us to be vigilant against what you say will transpire. The "fox is in charge of the chickenhouse." Turkish archives have been selectively cleansed. The next step is for individual Armenians to lay claim to their private lands and confiscated assets. One conference scheduled at a politically sensitive time does not cut it. Turkey must return all commandeered church properties and institute compensation for all the Armenian (and other Christian) heirs. These issues have as much relevance concerning Turkey today as they do about the Ottoman Empire. I am speaking here about those who would be living within the Turkish Republic if their grandparents or great-grandparents had not been killed or exhiled. Tweaking the Armenian-Turkish border is another matter entirely. As you say, it is the Kurds who are laying claim to the suburbs of Yerevan. If the Turkish state disappeared tomorrow, we would be dealing with Kurdish nation-builders.

Anahid, The majority of those residing in the former Armenian-inhabited vilayets are Kurds, who have been living in the area just south from ancient times. As for the Anatolian Turks their Eastern genes have been long watered-down. They are the descendents of the people of the Anatolian region, as well as, Slavs who converted to Islam. The real Turks from Central Asia now reside mainly in three former-Soviet Republics, who have excellent relations with Armenia, and in China.

I told him that I was not a "dyed-in-the-wool" Armenian like he was and considered an Armenian an Armenian regardless. I ended up marrying a woman whose family attended a Dashnag church. My brother ended up marrying a Jew.

The way to hold on to the Armenian diaspora is to remain flexible. When there are litmus tests as to who is accepted as an Armenian, you lose those who potentially would maintain loyalty to the group.

Hey Arpa, I have not been able to ascertain what the meaning of my former Armenian surname was. Do you know of an online source which is comprehensive? I don't want to post the surname here because it would be a giveaway to my identity. My present surname is as Anglo as they get at our Protestant church. Although I am a light-skinned Hye, I am still just a little too dark-skinned to totally assimilate.
