  1. Sam Peck was only part-Armenian. Yet, actor Gregory Peck's Armenian heritage was more than Princess Diana's. Someone should write a history about all the Armenians who intermarried with Brits in the British Empire and its colonies. Eliza Kewark (Kevorkian) met her mate, Forbes, in Bombay. This is how the letters in Armenian script ended up in the Spencer castle in England. Armenians were often the only Westerners settled in the Far East British colonies.
  2. Artaxias, The mass pogroms by the Armenian nobles and church of Paulician and Tondrakian Armenian Christians is the most absurb element of Armenian history. It greatly weakened our numbers in our ancestral lands and opened us up to invasion. Those who were not outright killed escaped to the Balkans and Southern France where they were again persecuted. You would think that our ecclesiastical leaders would have learned a lesson by this, not a chance!
  3. Artaxias, After a few generations of intermarriage, yes they can pass. I personally know some of these people. I also know exactly who they are descended from and the exact racial mixture of their ancestry. I also have pictures of their ancestors which attests to their mixed blood. Sometimes this can be very embarassing. I have a cousin who lives in a community that was so "lily-white" that it did not even except Jews. My relatives got in by passing for Europeans (that side of my famly are germag hyes with light hair and eyes who could easily pass for kermanatzis) and lying about their ancestry. After having three white children one of their neighbors, a family whose ancestry was in the Southern USA, had a black child. It seems that it was later revealed that both parents had some ancient black ancestry. A germag friend of mine married a beautiful stewardess of Japan Airlines. The first child closely resembles the wife. The second child has light hair and blue eyes. This meant that the mother had recessive Caucasian genes. After much crying the grandmother revealed that her grandmother was the illigitimate daughter of a geisha girl and a Portuguese sailor in Nagasaki.
  4. Yes, Mamoulian was unique for his time. Heditsian became "Hedison." Ohanian became "Connors." Kazanjian dropped her last name and became solely "Arlene Francis." Sarkissian had already been adopted by stepfather LaPiere but dropped all, even her married name and became solely "Cher." Aznavourian became "Aznavour." Yet, Boghosian has kept his surname.
  5. This phenomenon occurs in other ethnic groups as well. Do you all realize that many of the so-called White Anglo country-club set of Los Angeles are descended from Mexicans who were a mix (Mestizo) of Spanish, Indian and African? There is a group known as "Los Californianos," the descendants of the Mexican landowners of Alta California. These folks are mostly quite wealthy and although they acknowledge a Spanish background, refuse to face the historical fact that their ancestors, the landowning Californios, were a mixed race people.
  6. Armenians have learned to be flexible, to assimilate somewhat. Our history has dealt us difficult circumstances. Always being conquered. Does anyone realize how badly the Byzantines, fellow Christians, treated us despite the fact that many of the rulers of Byzantium were Armenian. As for Mamoulian, this was common practice in Hollywood. Italians, Jews, even Anglos with funny-sounding names were required to change their names.
  7. The hardliner Sharon, a man who set up residency in the Moslem Arab Quarter of Jerusalem to show the Palestinians "who is the boss," will soon be replaced by Netanyahu because he is viewed as soft dove. Peace will only come when each side agrees that the land must be shared.
  8. This was stated in an article that I read. I believe that it was in Groong. It appears that the article was wrong about this. Obviously someone mistook Persian for Armenian. As for Peck, this all stated when my French Armenian cousin visited me in Hermosa Beach shortly after having dinner with her husband's cousins in Bel Air who were next door neighbors with Veronique and Gregory Peck. They told me that the cousins told them Peck was part Armenian and was taking Armenian lessons.
  9. The Taj Mahal was built by the grieving Moghul husband of an Armenian princess, in her honor.
  10. There were also numerous Armenians who took Turkish names, assimilated into Turkish ways but MAINTAINED their Christian religion who were instrumental in building Turkey. All this is now buried so that present-day Turkey can feel comfortable with its myths.
  11. These televangelists are not the America I grew up in. They have made a pact with the Jewish neo-cons and with this pact they have hijacked America. I was born and raised in small-town America. I was raised in an odar Protestant church. Our minister was truly a holy man, who honored and respected our family altough we were the only family whose roots were outside of Northern Europe. He even read books on Armenians to understand us better. I am old enough and was aware young enough to know that there is something very amiss in America today.

    Exorcism

Otherwise Arvestaked would find himself in jail. Consent means nothing if the girl is under-age. A Serbian priest in Serbia has been arrested for causing the death of a young girl during exorcism.
  13. Bin Laden's operation attacked the US, and the US retaliated by attacking Saddam's regime. On July 1, 1972 Saddam had nationalized the Iraqi oil fields. Many of Bush's parents closest friends in Dallas went through hand-wringing on that day. An opportunity arose to recoup their losses. Not to say that Saddam was a benevolent leader of his country. If things stabilize in Iraq, it will be for the best.
  14. Yet writers do want to be read and appreciated, and sometimes they make money also. Dickran Kouyoumjian (Michael Arlen) was widely read and made money, although he rejected his Armenian heritage. Willie Saroyan was widely read and made money, was involved in Armenian affairs, visited Armenia and wrote Armenian-related stories but the only woman he ever married (twice) was a Jew. She had two children with him and one with her next husband, actor Waler Matthau.
  15. At least Egoyan produced a movie about the Genocide, with the full support of the good Lantos. From MGM and its former head Yeminijian, absolutely NOTHING.
  16. I was raised in the same faith as Hillary Clinton after the age of 7 (when I lost my innocence). Robertson's brand of Christianity is not Christianity at all. Read the 10 Commandments.
  17. What is the essence of the behaviors of a true Christian and how does this guy measure up? For that matter how do all the top dogs in DC measure up?
  18. Avetissyan is stark-raving mad. His outbusts are scheduled every few months. It shows that there is some freedom of speech in Armenia. The man belongs in a khentanotz.
  19. Not only for writers, Ara. Do you think that Manoogian, Kerkorian, Cafesjian, Shakarian, etc. etc. would have become successful if they had directed their business toward an Armenian clientele. They would have starved.
  20. Dave, Ethiopia considers itself part of the African family of nations as opposed to a part of the Islamic world. Armenia can develop ties with the West while keeping alliances with Russia as insurance (do you remember how many times the Europeans have abandoned us after getting our assistance? - it started with the Crusades).
  21. OK Gams, If we should not act European then what? Like our Iranian buddies? I could understand this under the Shah who was pushing the Persians toward the West. An alliance with Iran is all well and good for geo-political purposes unless Bush and his neo-con crazies invade Iran. If they reinstitute the regime of the Shah perhaps our cultures can cross-fertilate. I am fine with the alliance but I don't want to see Armenia become a proto-Islamic state. How about our Arab neighbors? Should we give lessons in Yerevan in advanced suicide bombing? How about geting some Palestinians to give lessons in culinary arts so that the whole of Armenia can get tomaine poisoning? Pakistan? Talibanians? How about beheading Armenian Loosavorchagan women who become engaged to Hye Catholics or Pochcagans, al la the Saudi Princess who was executed for getting engaged to a commoner? Far East Asia? Perhaps. The Japanese have come a long way since they were isolated from the world in the 18th century. Shanghai is becoming a world class city. Perhaps you will be comfortable if we all became Sufis and joined the Islamic world. Don't think that the Turks would welcome us with open arms. The Kurds are Moslem and that doesn't mean that there is a lovefest between them and the Turks. OK Gams, if not Europe what? A country that is Islamic in every way but the nominal religion?
  22. I dropped out of concern for Armenian issues for 20 years except for giving to Armenian Fund
  23. I am sure that photos have been taken of these monuments pre-"restoration." Please show here and provide comparisons to the European authorities who are weighing Turkey's EU membership. In any case, it is very obvious that the replacement stones are not in the character of the originals. Even the desecration has been done slip-shod.
  24. Domino, Please do not "lift" only a segment of my post and respond to it alone. I clearly stated later in the post that the Turkish government wants to minimize the prescence of Armenian culture in the historic Armenian areas. As for the botched restoration, placing miscolored stones can only be bufoonery and incompetence. Must you perceive EVERYTHING as conspiracy?
