I hope you guys and gals are also enjoying your holidays. I started this thread hoping to have jazz lovers talk about this great music. And it sounds nice! Once my romanian friends invited me to a concert which was performed by "the best romanian jazz musician". Can you imagine my astonishment when I read his name? Hmmm.... maybe i'm just being an idiot Vava, Have you heard of Datevik Hovanesian(www.datevik.com) or Armen Dolaian(www.armenjazz.com) or the internationally famous Armenian Jazz Orchestra (www.armenianow.com/2003/january10/arts/)Â there are actually many who mix Armenian melodies with modern Jazz and it sounds great. I disagree,I listen to plenty real Jazz in the real traditional sense right here in Boston. Boston has some cool Jazz clubs and some of the local talents are really great. I listened to Bradford Marsales last mouth live and it was great and he played some nice new compositions mostly balads.You got to go out lot of great talents don't have a CD out and marketed like other genra of music. It is also an expression of emotions by its performers. In this sense jazz can be called the impressionism of the music. You feel affection for a certain style of jazz if you like the mix, the coloring, the heartbeat of emotions expressed through the performer's improvisations, than it's your stuff. Clearly the present jazz performers reflect on present day society and the present mix in the emotional world, a world that is increasingly contradictory, hypocrate, inferior, polarised, materialistic etc. Moreover, the prizm of "worshipping a woman" or "worshipping a man" that each and every jazz player's/singer's emotion went through before reaching the listeners ear is not there anymore. Shortly, jazz was all about normal, mainstream sex and love before. Present day jazz reflects on sex as always, but the thing is that it reflects on different kinds of sexual relationship that are there nowadays. That is why I say I don't like contamporary jazz. Things come simple from time to time. Don't put words into my mouth, I never said jazz is sociology, sex or religion. Life is both complicate and simple. You said what you think Jazz is not. And you only put 1 phrase about what you think Jazz is - "an abstract form of art" (than you advised to refrain even from that definition). Overall you sound like "Armen, I'm smarter than you".
