Add to your collection Duke Ellington, Miles Davis (more specifically Quiet Nights), Spyro Gyra, Grover Washington, Jr., Chuck Corea. Dave Brubeck is cool too. Gamavor jan, touching your nerves doesn't appeal to me, I'd rather touch your....shoulder, but I am afraid I'll freeze, because you are just so cooool!!! Chuck Corea I like but not all of his stuff. Quite Nights is awesome! Vavchka Love Supreme was purchased in its entirety as a royal piece of my album collection , next one in line is my favorite - “Kind of Blue.” But guys, I specifically asked for tracks not just names or albums, I need nothing but the best selection of glorious masterpieces by old and new, classic or avant-gard. vava Posted March 5, 2004 Report Share Posted March 5, 2004 I understand your wish for 'hot' tracks - our entire music industry is based upon this premise and we have been long force-fed 'tracks' up the wazoo. I have never been one to listen to just a song or two - I prefer listening to the entire work. Often with these artists, the album is more than the sum of its tracks (however, I'll be the first to admit that quality albums are a rare item these days....) GuitARA Posted March 6, 2004 Report Share Posted March 6, 2004 I'm VERY picky when it comes to Jazz. The only modern Jazz guitarist/artist I (really) like is, Mike Stern ... John Scofield, Bill Frissell, John Mclaughlin are pretty good, too. Some classic Jazz artists I like would be Grant Green, Wes, George Benson, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, and Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, a few others. I must say that John Coltrane is the most intense musician I've ever heard. The pure emotion that he puts in is almost devastating. Listen to the end where the 2 greatest jazz performers EVER 'scat' together. This maybe the best VOCAL album, period, in the universe Dizzy Gillespie & Charlie Parker - Bird & Diz Charlie Parker - Confirmation - Kim is an awesome track. Another good CD to get is the soundtrack to the movie "Bird" Mile Davis Kind of Blue - All Blues The Best of Miles Davis & Gil Evans - the whole Album is amazing, I love Summertime Duke Ellington & Count Basie - First Time: The Count Meets the Duke. Will send chills up your spine and The London Concerts will blow your head off. Keith Jarrett - La Scala - Wind also Over the Rainbow(call me sentimental I dont care) I am afraid to put this one because people think I am weird, but I enjoy Mel Torme(I know I know, different kind of jazz) Datevik - Listen To My Heart (I like it.) I also like Summertime by Ella & Louis. who can forget about "take Five " by Brubeck quartet. I also enjoy listening to Tatevick Hovhanissian's "Listen to my heart" album. I also like Miles' "Tutu" album Does anyone like bossa nova? I also like to listen to Stan getz. Someone in here put George Benson in the "classical jazz" category but that's not right he has nothing to do with classical jazz... he's style is contemprary. Someone in here put George Benson in the "classical jazz" category but that's not right he has nothing to do with classical jazz... he's style is contemprary. Yeah that was me. I guess Benson is not really a 'classic' Jazz artist. However, when most people hear the name 'George Benson', they tend to think of his later stuff (late 70's on) , like 'masqarade', etc. But George Benson was initially a hardcore jazzer. Listen to his album 'Beyond The Blue Horizon' or anything else from the mid 60's to early 70's, you'll see what I'm talking about. It's not contemporary by any stretch. The guy is absolutely brilliant, his band is absolutely incredible, all of them are awesome people. Bass was a woman, first woman I've seen on base ever. I was so intoxicated by music that I was screaming the loudest. My date was rather tolerant of my insane ways. Afterwards some other women in the club picked up on the vibe, at the end the whole club was yelling. You absolutely have to check out his music, he's John Coltrane's son and an awesome dude. At the end of the night he came up to me, shook my hand and thanked me for being such an enthusiast. I thought that he just took a pity on an insane woman, but he's such an articulate, humorous guy who is so surprisingly humble. His music??? You must check it out, some of his stuff is mind blowing. He's touring Europe next, unfortunately. By the way, I find that jazz musicians and jazz lovers are amazingly cool people, interesting, intelligent and rather funny.
