Arvestaked
Upcoming Jazz Show Recomendations for Los Angeles Spazio Bill Cunliffe -- Wednesday, Jan. 5 (very good and respected local pianist) Bill Watrous -- Friday, Jan. 7 (trombone player; very cool; played with Wes Montgomery) Ron Eschete -- Thusday, Jan. 13 (excellent jazz guitarist) Ernie Watts -- Friday, Jan. 14 (amazing sax player; I don't like the pianist but it'll still be worth it) Bob Sheppard -- Wednesday, Jan. 26 (phenomenal band; Sheppard is a respected studio musician and did the saxaphone solo on the Lost Highway soundtrack; the other musicians are absolutely phenomenal: Erskine is a drumming legend and Dave Carpenter is one of the best bass players in town)!!! Catalina Bar & Grill Dave Weckl -- Jan. 21 to Jan 23 (legendary Chick Corea drummer with an asskicking band) Vital Information -- Jan. 25 to Jan. 30 (a stack of legends rolled into one band; you'll hear some ripping guitar by another Corea musician and some insane drumming from a former Journey-man) McCoy Tyner!!! -- Feb. 9 to Feb 14 (that's right! it's the pianist from the John Coltrane quartet! this is a real treat) Chick Corea himself! -- Feb. 28 to Mar. 5 The Baked Potato Sandro Albert -- Tuesday, Dec. 28 (here you can see Dave Carpenter playing a six-string bass instead on an upright) Virgil Donati -- Wednesday, Dec. 29 (highly skilled and entertaining drummer with excellent bandmates; sweep picking and odd time galore) Triple Sec -- Sunday, Jan. 2 (what can I say? along w/ others you have Luis Conte on percussion, Walferedo Reyes on drums, and Eric Marienthal on sax) The Rythem Dogs -- Wednesday, Jan. 5 (Tom Brechtlein is on drums; played with everyone) La Ve Lee Pancho Sanchez -- Monday, Dec. 27 (one of the most famous conga players ever) Marco Mendoza -- Tuesday, Dec. 28 (does weird stuff like imitation latin percussion solos with his voice while he plays bass; Joey Heredia is an awesome drummer) Tuesday, Jan. 4 (Marvin Smitty Smith will be playing; you'd recognize him as the drummer from The Tonight Show) There's a lot of stuff in January. Look for these names: Alex Acuna, Chad Wackerman, Greg Bissonette, Scott Henderson, Sheila E, Kirk Covington Charlie O's Sal Marquez, a very strange trumpeter who played with Frank Zappa is playing tonight Lunaria David Hansen -- Wed. Dec. 29 (New Orleans style) The Jazz Bakery Tigran Nersissian will be there with a trio on Jan. 16; he's supposed to be a real good bassist Eh, that's good enough. Azat
A dear friend recently gave me a CD that I love. Gene Harris - Alley Cats http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00001ZSTA.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg From Amazon Since the start of his career in the mid-1950s, pianist Gene Harris has been stereotyped as a soul-jazz pianist by virtue of his influential work with the Three Sounds, which helped define the genre until the group's breakup in 1970. But Harris's playing, while enormously soulful, funky, and gospel-flavored, has always been much more than just that one style. Recorded live in December 1998, Alley Cats captures his topnotch band live in full flight at Seattle's Jazz Alley with guests Red Holloway on tenor sax, Ernie Watts on alto sax, Jack McDuff on organ, and Harris's daughter Niki on vocals. The opening cut, a funkified version of the Crusaders' "Put It Where You Want It," is what listeners have come to expect from Harris, a rollicking workout that shows off his blues-inflected playing to delightful effect. From there the album reveals some of the pianist's other colors, from the Afro-Caribbean beat of "Magic Lady" to Benny Golson's down-home "Blues March" and Watts's bebop tip to Charlie Parker, "Bird's Idea." Jack McDuff's solo on Harris's swinging "Walkin' with Zach," and Niki Harris's moving rendition of "You've Changed" only further the evidence that these were indeed a couple of red-hot nights in Seattle. --Ezra Gale
Armen
Dave Weckl -- Jan. 21 to Jan 23 (legendary Chick Corea drummer with an asskicking band) style_images/master/snapback.png I went to his performance with Corea band (inspired by some sientology book) in Catalina Bar last November. Both Weckl and the bassist Patituchi were great technically but the latest compositions sucked big time. Glad they played some of the old stuff. kumkap
i can not believe that in this entire topic talking about armenian jazz musicians that no one mentioned paul motian. the guy was 1/3rd of probably the greatest jazz trio of all time, the first bill evans trio, with scott lefaro. as far as i'm concerned if you've never heard any of this group's recordings you can't call yourself a jazz fan. no other armenian jazz musician mentioned in this topic even comes close to paul motian in terms of a pedigree in jazz. how many armenians have recorded with keith jarrett, charlie haden, gary peacock, dewey redman, don cherry, joe lovano, gonzalo rubalcaba? people are mentioning armen donelian before paul motian. what a joke. how sad that we know so little about the accomplishments of this colossal armenian figure in american jazz, i have never seen him given any interest by any armenian organization, publication, or what have you. was he ever invited to armenia, interviewed by any newspaper? very sad. vava
Bill Evans was a genius - but I don't think people gave enough credit to Paul Motian for his contribution to the Bill Evans Trio. He's a drummer extroadinaire. I heard an early recording of his with Thelonius Monk which was just amazing! There's no doubt that Paul Motian is, as you say, a 'colossal ... figure in american jazz' but where did you get information that he's an Armenian? kumkap
i always knew motian was armenian, probably my dad told me. but anyways a while back i was in a record store and saw a paul motian album called "story of maryam". i didn't buy it then but now i wish i did since i never saw it again after that. all i remember is that it was from an italian label. my favorite out of the evans/lafaro/motian albums is explorations (1961). the rapport between the musicians is stunning, and they all play their hearts out without raising their "voices" above a whisper. this is the most intense yet introspective music i know of. i will never tire of listening to "haunted heart", "how deep is the ocean", "sweet and lovely", and "the boy next door". Anileve
Do I have some exciting new today for those of you who are jazz and Bossa aficionados. I made a delightful discovery this morning when I accidentally came across Madeleine Peyroux's music online. I was absolutely stunned and probably listened to every sample that was available on Amazon. Her voice resembles clearly and frighteningly close to that of Billie Holiday. Husky and smoky with depth and that melancholic feel. Unbelievable. Listen for yourself, Azatyush I think you will share my sentiments. Here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...d=1VR9VR28C1AT7 But wait I have more. Cesaria Evora, whom I love so very much will be performing both in NY and California (LA & SD) in June. And she will be accompanied by Madeleine in SD and by Karen Ann, who reminds me of Astruds sexy and sad voice. (I like her French album more, the English one lost it's authentic touch.) Azatik, Armel and Armen, you are some lucky hot potatoes. Arvest, whaddaya think? http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/765015 I feel so charged right now, like I have officially gone mad. Must....purchase....tickets....
Armen
Thanks for the info, Eve jan. Would definitely like to see Cesaria. Too bad she's gonna be here around the time I leave.
Azat
I have fallen in love with the music of barefoot diva - Cesaria Evora. Evelina have you had the chance to listen to her. I have to say that I just adore her voice and here music. Sings in Portuguese and she mixes the folk tunes with the acoustic guitar, violin, accordion, drums, and clarinet. Maybe Boghos knows of her and her music and can add more info. There is the only CD I have and will be gettign more soon http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000APHOT.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=glance&s=music
vava
Hey dude - Evora's great! I think we discussed her a bit in the latin music thread a while back: Here. I don't have a lot of her music, but the CDs I do have are all fabulous.

I know we definitely want to drive to Quebec city for one night, but our time is super limited. Jazz does sound great. are there any good clubs Edit note 1: I am in kind of heaven. Got a shipment for 7 Aznavour CDs from Holland. Imports that I was unable to find here in US. Edit Note 2: For sure love to see guys and Fadiushka if you guys have time. Even for a quick lunch or something Edited May 25, 2005 by Azat

That doesn't change the fact that she is one of my favorite sirens.
