Hap
whats up guys... now i know i might get a lot of s**t from you guys for saying this but what is the big deal about System of a Down? I mean yeah, ok, they are armenian. but there are so many more metal bands that are better. Can you even consider System of a Down metal? I dont mean to talk bad about them because im not. They seem like really cool guys. But i hear a lot of armos tell me system of a down is the best metal band, and im like you dont know S**T about metal. There are so many more bands that write better material. For example Slayer, Death, Iron Maiden, etc... if you wanna know more bands just say so and ill post the rest. Sasun
Not everyone considers SOAD as a metal band. They mix different styles and ganres, including but not limited to metal, classical rock, jazz, mediterranean. I don't think anyone says that SOAD is the best metal band. I think Metallica is unsurpassed in the metal field. It is a subjective feeling though.
Hap
Metallica? holy s**t dude... that is worse then saying system of a down is the best. Metallica isnt even a metal band anymore! they are a ***en joke. St. Anger had to be the worst album in metal history! Here is a review of that joke called st. anger, this is taken from my friends website Terminal Frost - Heavy Metal Zine Ah yes, the biggest joke in music today...Metallica. When Load and Re-Load were released, I thought Metallica was at it's absolute lowest. I was wrong. Metallica has reached a new level of disappointment. St. Anger is definitely by far, the worst album Metallica has ever released. The album starts off with a nu metal attempt at Anthrax's "What Doesn't Die", called Frantic. We first got to hear this one at the joke concert during the MTV icon show, where nu metal bands played Metallica's songs. It sucked live, and it sucks in the studio, too. I think the funniest part of this song is where James tries to scream in a "hardcore" voice "frantic tic tock tic tic tic tock". I heard more intelligent lyrics in Korn than that shit! Other highlights of comedy and disappointment on the album are in St. Anger the song. This song opens with a typical nu metal riff, and is quickly followed by the annoying trash can snare drum by Lars, and the "hardcore" double bassing he learned from listening to Slipknot. The song also has James rapping on one part saying "it's rushing out, it's rushing out", whatever that's supposed to mean. And obviously, the song has no solo or anything interesting, just like the rest of the album. This album was also released with four different covers, as a scheme to get hardcore fans to buy all four of them. Another way Metallica cheats their fans, to get rich. And another thing, Kirk has no purpose on this album! There are no solos, so what is the use of a lead guitarist? The bass is almost non-existent and the drums sound like Lars is banging on an empty trash can, and other various pots and pans. Not to mention, this album has the absolute worst production I have ever heard on a modern album. I guess they were trying to achieve a "raw" sound. To sum it all up, if you know anything about metal, or if you have an ounce of musical knowledge, you would agree that this album is a joke, and is without a doubt the WORST album released this year so far, and still will be at the end of the year. Terrible, just plain terrible... I forgive you for thinking so highly of metallica Sasun, you most likely havent heard REAL metal bands yet. and thats ok. you can hit me up on AIM my screen name is ATHECY01 and ill tell you aaaaaaalll about real metal
Sasun
Well, I meant the old Metallica. I agree that Metallica sucks big time now, they are just after money calling it a "new style". In my opinion no metal band has had anything better than old Metallica. Those are classical metal masterpieces, the new bands are following the standards set up by Metallica. Iron Maiden - I have made many attempts to understand them, I just can't stand them. Slipknot - the only relatively good thing were some songs on their first album. All other songs that I heard are monotonic repetitions of their average standard.Death - I honestly don't remember anything from them. Probably its death metal, which I don't like. There is very little that can be called music in death metal (my bro is a big fan of them though)Slayer - a good band.Static-X - a good one, not great. I like Mudvayne, there is at least some originality. P.S. I am not that big a metal fan anymore, so don't take me very seriously Edited August 20, 2003 by Sasun
Pilafhead
I've been a metal fan since before each of you were born! You name it, I like it: classic metal, speed metal, black metal, death metal, doom. It's all great. SOAD are great because they're different. I love Serj's Dead Kennedy-like vocals mixed with nu metal stuff. And Daron's into all kinds of stuff from Beatles to Mayhem and it shows. They're definitely different from the rest of the down-tuned sludge bands. And I agree with Sasun that Metallica are up near the top of all time greats. Yeah, Re-Load sucked but they've got enough other great albums that more than make-up for it. Of the classic speed metal bands, only Metallica and Slayer have kept up the good work. Anthrax and Megadeth only had a couple of truly great albums, with the rest being shite. I agree that St. Anger was a letdown but that doesn't mean everything from Kill Em' All to Garage Inc isn't top-notch. http://www.blackmetal.com/images/eurosmall.gif
THOTH
Pilafhead - I think I can agree with your post (rock on dude!) LOL... Myself - not a pure metal fan admittedly - as I like much other music - am partial to early Judas Priest (first 3 albums...), Motorhead (the purest of pure metal IMO) (Lemmy rules!), and (early) Black Sabbath (what can one say...). Still I think that SAOD is better then any of them...not (just) as a metal band (because they are more) but because of their music and message that transecends the metal genre and is really something interesting and unique in itself...and they are Armenian, brother - and are just awesome - yeah! (BTW - I still have an impressive collection...thousands of albums, literally...on vinyl....and several (classic) turntables (Dual/United Audio & technics) to play them on...) nairi
YAY!!! Music is finally back on this forum!!! Thanks Pilafhead/Mike and Winston! I've always enjoyed reading your reviews and have always learned A LOT from them! I hope you guys do this more often again!
THOTH
Nairi - so does that go for any music - or just metal? If you like metal I really do think that the early Judas Priest albums are well worth seeking out (if your not familiar with them)...Stained Class!, Sin After Sin and Sad Wings of Destiny in particular...in fact on Sad Wings of Destiny there is a tune called Genocide... Sasun
Actually I forgot to mention, Sepultura are really great. I like Nation the best. They are also unlike any other band.
Mher
Sasun Did you hear the last Iron Maiden CD? And a "live in Rio" DVD? If not, I'd suggest take a look, and enjoy, maybe you'll find your "good old days" are coming back Thoth, Pilafhead, ay ay ay guys, shame on you, and no mention of Jimmy Hendrix ha? And I'm not even mentioning Led Zeppelin..... oh I guess I did you call your self’s a metal heads lol, I remember the old days, and maybe you Pilafhead can tell me how and why it became to be called heavy metal??? Let me see how much you know
nairi
Sorry, didn't meant to highlight two above the rest. I know there are many more music fans and "experts" around here, it's just that no one talks about it!!!! And now finally things seem to be discussed again! Winston, my brother practically has the whole Judas Priest collection. He wasn't very impressed by SOAD, says they're kids compared to Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. I don't mind them so much... THOTH
Mher - I don't really see Hendrix & Zep as strict metal per se...(and I love them both - Hendrix in particular...in fact I know the guy who is curator of the hendrix archive in Washinton State...[a big Zappa head BTW! LOL])....and there are many other "oldie" rock bands that are metal/pre-metal - like Deep Purple, QMS, etc etc etc (not to mention the many Euro metal bands)...that are all decent/worthwhile in there own way. I'm not at all a strict metal head BTW...though I have some friends that are...
Pilafhead
Of course, Zep and Hendrix are great, but yeah, I too wouldn't call them metal. Nairi: Thanks! Sasun: Sepultura (with Max) and Soulfly are two of my favorite groups of the last 5-10 years! Max was pretty much the reason I recently picked up guitar*. Which is actually funny, because Max isn't really that great of a guitarist. I just like the way he's mixed more traditional Brazilian music with metal (I love Brazilian music). When SOAD first came out I thought, "Finally, someone can mix Armenian music with modern music like Sepultura did for Brazilian stuff!!" SOAD haven't incorporated it as much..YET! *For those who remember that I was trying to learn the oud: Yeah, I gave it up. Too hard. A guitar is much easier. All: I like all kinds of music. Talk about any you want! Anyone into Black Label Society? I've been listening to Blessed Hellride a lot lately. I wish the vocals were better, but Zakk kicks ass. gamavor
Hendrix and Zeppelin are far from being metal. The founding fathers are good old Black Sabath. Mike, I was searching in the music stores recordings of a group called SAGA, from 80s', mostly art-progressive rock, but I couldn't find anything. They simply never heard of them. Funny they have Givan Gasparian though, but no SAGA. Any suggestions?
Nikephoros_Phokas
Anyone into Black Label Society? I've been listening to Blessed Hellride a lot lately. I wish the vocals were better, but Zakk kicks ass. That sums up my feelings on most metal. The instrumental is usually to my liking but the lyrics and the singing is usually horrible. Megadeth has great instrumental but the way Dave Mustaine chooses to sing the lyrics makes it sound like shit. I think the reason Metallica got so popular is because they had everything thing down, they had some great lyrics, the vocals were sound and the instrumental was good as well, so of course they became the most famous of the metal bands and this process ruined them. Now Metallica is just riding off their popularity, St. Anger was just a waste of their talent. Even Load and Reload, many people would consider them good albums if they were not done by Metallica. Before Load and Reload Metallica all Metallica albums could be considered metal but those two albums were not Metal, but they were good albums compared to other bands but substandard by Metallica standards and not in the same genre as their previous albums. I think Metal is too cliched. Pantera was trying to portray themselves as too tough when before they used to be a glam band before trying a new trend of toughness. Pantera had good instrumental and I like the way Anselmo sung, but the lyrics ranged from medicore to juvenile garbage, I would be embarrassed to sing some of these Pantera songs if I was leader of a cover band on stage. Then you have bands into the phantasy crap like Iced Earth that people cannot relate to lyrics, the lyrics are some phantasy. Then you have the Metal Bands who sing in a manner that you cannot even understand more than a few words per song because of the harsh sounds, the screaming, the throatlike sounds, etc. Metal has too many of these cliches. The thing about System of Down, they are no cliche you cannot even pin them down into a neat genre, they defy classification. So who cares if they are metal or not? It is good that they are not metal, if they were they would probably be some stupid cliche.
Sasun
Mher, I will check out the last Iron Maiden, maybe I will get it this time Has anyone heard that officially (according to music critics) Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" is the first ever metal song? That song sounds a little metallish, but where is Rolling Stones and where is metal.
Sip
SOAD rules I like them a lot. Can't put my finger on exactly why I like them, but I like'em The other similar ones that I like are Evanescence, Linkin Park, and Ramstein. Among these, I think Ramstein has the worst and stupidest lyrics ever, but there is something about German that makes it sound sooooooooo good
vava
I've never been too much into metal - I have enjoyed much of the early 'rock' music mentioned, Deep Purple were great, as were Motorhead, but that's as far as I went metal wise. Recently I've been listening to the Storkes - they're just too hip for me EDIT: I meant to say the STROKES Edited August 31, 2003 by vava
