Self-determination the only solution for Nagorno-Karabakh: MEP Eleni Theocharous

16:22, 13 Apr 2016
Siranush Ghazanchyan

“Self-determination is the only solution for Nagorno- Karabakh. The
European Union should impose sanctions against Baku with regards to
the new outbreak of Azeri aggression against the people of Nagorno
Karabakh,” MEP Eleni Theocharous said at a plenary session of the
European Parliament.

“The Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh have resisted against the Soviet
totalitarianism for 60 years now and have managed not to be absorbed
by the authoritarian regime of Azerbaijan, to which they were
unwillingly given by the South Soviets. After many bloody fights, the
Armenians have gained their freedom and their right to
self-determination. This would be the only fair solution for Nagorno
Karabakh,” she said.

“Since 1994, the Armenians are defending themselves against the
constant attacks by Azerbaijan, which uses its economic power towards
purchasing heavy weapons whereas at the same time its own people live
in absolute poverty. Its utter purpose is the destruction of the
Karabakh people since the continuous attacks and killings of civilians
are Azeri practices,” the MEP added.

“It is therefore the EU’s responsibility to support the people of
Nagorno Karabakh, who fight for their freedom, and thus not to support
the continuation of an unjust status quo. Peace equals recognition of
the right to self-determination for the people of Nagorno Karabakh,”
Eleni Theocharous concluded.

Appeal to scientists: We do not have oil, but we have brains

16:27 | April 13,2016 | Politics

Over 260 members of the Union of Artsakh War Veterans left for the
Artsakh border with Azerbaijan to support our young soldiers. “They
came and registered as volunteers. Still in the 90s, people came to
our Union from different places, the State Conservatoire, Medical
University and other places. They asked for arms and said they wanted
to go and fight for their homeland, Hamlet Hovsepyan, Chairman of the
Union of Artsakh War Veterans.

He says it is necessary to strengthen our army by providing it with
the necessary weapons.

“In the 90s we had weapons to fight and spirit to win the enemy. Today
we still have that spirit but the enemy has improved its weaponry. Now
I am appealing to our scientists living in Armenia and abroad to unite
efforts and create [in a short time] firearms and equipment that will
allow no one to fire on our soldiers. It is true, we do not have oil
and gas, but we have wits.”

In reply to A1+’s observation that the country should allocate funds
for it, Mr Hovsepyan said, “I agree with you that the creation of any
technology requires finances but we need to find out information about
our scientific potential. I believe that our scientists will respond
to this call.”

At the same time, Hamlet Hovsepyan emphasized the importance of
consolidation of different forces which will allow carrying out
precise steps. “I am calling on the authorities and the opposition to
turn their faces towards people, think about people and see what they
can do for our people.”

We do not need candies and cookies, we need arms – fighters say from
frontline (video)

15:21 | April 13,2016 | Politics

Instead of sending sweets to our soldiers on the frontline, we had
better send them arms, Armenian songwriter Ruben Hakhverdyan said on
April 13.

During the press conference Mr Hakhverdyan contacted one of his
friends, freedom fighter Vardan Gevorgyan, who is in one of the border
positions at present. “We do not need candies and cookies, send us
night vision devices, send us night vision devices (NVDs) for us to be
able to spot and destroy enemy’s troops. Our guys here say that we
have killed 2500 enemy soldiers and destroyed 35 of their tanks,” Mr
Gevorgyan said on the phone.

Ruben Hakhverdyan says the authorities in Armenia are responsible for
the the recent escalation of the situation along the Line of Contact
and should resign.

“We can fight and destroy our external enemy, but how can we fight
against the internal enemy? They were intervened in this mess we need
to ‘dispossess the kulaks.’ How have they accumulated their millions?”
the singer said.

In reply to A1+’s question how he would assess the work of our Foreign
Office on the international arena, Mr Hakhverdyan said, “Do not
mention the name of that person [Edward Nalbandian] in my presence. I
do not want that name mentioned here and I do not want to talk about
him here.”

Talysh fighters of Azerbaijani army consider fight for Artsakh not
their war - Video

12:05, 13 April, 2016

YEREVAN, APRIL 13, ARMENPRESS. The 4-day war in the
Artsakh-Azerbaijani border, which was unleashed by Baku, gave the
answers of many questions in there. This war and its subsequent
responses revealed not only the weak sides of the Azerbaijani armed
forces and the fact of IR attackers' partaking in them, but also the
fact, that the prevailing part of the Azerbaijani’s' side, fighting in
the frontline, are representatives of national minorities- without any
special preparedness, fighting spirit or at least a little respect
towards the motherland. Besides, the presence of exclusively national
minorities in the frontline speaks about the not transparent muster in
Azerbaijan and the corruptibility of the Defense office as a state
system, and also about Baku's serious plans for getting rid of the
national minorities. It's obvious that with the help of these tactical
actions the military authority of Azerbaijan was trying to
simultaneously solve two problems: to fight against Armenians in the
frontline and to get rid of national minorities, particularly of
Lezgis and Talyshers. . It's also interesting that not all Talyshers
want to fight and not all of them consider the Armenians as an enemy.

"It isn't our war". It's the name of one of the TV broadcasts on the
"Talyshistan's national TV-broadcasting". As “Armenpress” reports,
during this broadcast, lasting more than an hour, the commentator
refers to the military actions in the Artsakh-Azerbaijani border in
April and to the killed representatives of national minorities during
that time. The commentator emphasizes that during the war the
Azerbaijani side has had serious losses- both technical and human. ."
There are many of our brothers (Talyshers) among those victims. Like
the previous times, the Talishers are in the frontline. They have to
obey the despot's orders and be killed for the sake of others'
interests",- says the commentator and states with a sorrow that
Talyshers sacrifice their lives to Aliev's beaten extremism, without
understanding that in that way they are supporting their own enemy.

The television broadcast has become a seriously discussed issue on the
Internet. A great number of people from Talysh commented on the
youtube account of the TV channel, asking the head writers of the
broadcast also to talk about how the Azerbaijani treated them at the
Artsakh war. Many Talyshers said that they are sorry that their
compatriots fight against Armenians , emphasizing the fact that they
only obey Aliev and they do not perceive Armenians as enemies. The
comments of the Azerbaijani concerning this issue are also
interesting. E.g. “If the national minorities of Azerbaijan are not
content with their lives in Baku , let them go. Nobody is forcing them
to live with us” or another example: “You are foolish that you think
that Armenians will treat you better, standing up for them”.

Frank Engel: It is time to recognize independence of Nagorno Karabakh

01:56, 13 April, 2016

YEREVAN, APRIL 13, ARMRNPRESS. Today Azerbaijan is an aggressor, as it
was 25 years ago. MEP representing Luxemburg Frank Engel announced
about this at the European Parliament during the discussion on Nagorno
Karabakh.

“Azerbaijan will continue to violate the ceasefire for a long time.
Azerbaijan acts like that, as it believes that all Armenians in that
region must vanish. This is the reason why it has denied anything the
Minsk Group proposes. And the Minsk Group can propose only mutual
concessions, which Azerbaijan does not want to make”, Engel mentioned.

In his words, it is already clear that Armenia might not want to make
a concession to a country that glorifies Ramil Safarov, the one who
killed an Armenian by an exe and was extradited from Hungary to
Azerbaijan, something that should have never happened. “In this
situation the only palpable step is to recognize the independence of
Nagorno Karabakh. Once it was defined as fully in line with the acting
Soviet Constitution. It was never recognized, and now it the time to
do that”, Frank Engel concluded.

Polish MEP urges EU to guarantee Nagorno Karabakh’s security

11:07, 13 April, 2016

YEREVAN, APRIL 13, ARMENPRESS. The European Union should be presented
in Armenia as more as possible, in order to guarantee its security. As
“Armenpress” reports, this was stated by Polish MEP Marek Jurek during
his speech in the European Parliament.

“99 years ago Pope Benedict XV urged in a peace message to stop the
war massacres and guarantee Armenia’s security. We know how much the
Armenian people have suffered throughout history. I am not only
talking about the Armenian Genocide which happened 100 years ago. I am
talking about the dramatic origin of the Armenian independence in the
late 80s and early 90s”, Jurek said.

The MEP spoke about the right of Armenia to protect its own borders,
by saying “Armenia has a special right to guarantee the security of
its borders. The Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh has the right
to security also. We cannot forget them. The more we are present
there, the more we will be able to assist security of Armenia”.

Seyran Ohanyan presents war crimes committed by Azerbaijan to U.S. Ambassador

POLITICS 18:09 13/04/2016 ARMENIA

Minister of Defense of Armenia hosted U.S. Ambassador Extraordinary
and Plenipotentiary to Armenia, H.E. Richard M. Mills, Jr. on April
13, reports the public relations department of the Ministry.

During the meeting, they discussed the large-scale offensive
operations unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno Karabakh Republic
and the current situation on the Line of Contact.

Seyran Ohanyan presented the peculiarities of Azerbaijani obvious
aggression, including war crimes against Armenian soldiers and
civilians and other gross violations of provisions of the law on armed
conflicts to the U.S. Ambassador. The Minister then noted that he will
concentrate his efforts on providing an internationally accepted legal
assessment of those crimes.

The importance of active mediation efforts, strengthening a written
ceasefire agreement and confidence building mechanisms, were once
again stressed.

Vladimir Solovyov: Armenia may turn away from Russia

POLITICS 20:26 13/04/2016 NKR

Well-known Russian analyst, TV and radio journalist, Vladimir Solovyov
addressed the military operations on the Line of Contact between
Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan during a Russian TV programme,
stressing that Russia shouldn’t think Azerbaijan could substitute
Armenia.

“Interestingly enough, we don’t discuss the question of who started
it. For example, concerning Ukraine we insist that Kiev should
negotiate with Lugansk and Donetsk, yet as far as Azerbaijan is
concerned, they still don’t negotiate. Why the double standards? We’re
losing either. Why don’t we want to see the broadcasts about beheaded
Armenian soldiers, about capture and torture of people? I realize that
we must consider the interests of both sides, but does it mean that
we’re no longer interested in the truth,” Solovyov said.
He stressed that it is a must to talk about the truth for the
international community to have an objective image of the events on
the Line of Contact. The analyst also strongly criticized all the
experts who rushed to give victorious description to Azerbaijan’s
operations.

“No blitzkrieg occurred. Moreover, nothing similar to that happened.
Thus I wonder over the approaches to that. Should we lose our last
friend, real friend? We have a military base there. We monitor the
border, and can you imagine what anti Russian sentiments are evolving
in Armenia now? You should not pretend that Azerbaijan might replace
Armenia for us. I would like to remind we have no base in Azerbaijan;
we do not protect the borders of that state. Aside from that, an
increased visit of Turkish officials is recorded there. Therefore we
should respond to a single question ahead of us - where are our
national interests?” Solovyov asked rhetorically.
According to the analyst, this may lead to a situation when Armenia
will turn away from Russia, which will negatively impact on Russia.
Drawing parallels between Russia- Crime and Armenia-Artsakh relations,
Solovyov finds similarities in the occurred situations.

“Note, that the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan never brought us to
a deadlock through not threatening to recognize the independence of
Nagorno Karabakh, a situation when Russia will have to enter into the
war with Azerbaijan within the CSTO obligations. Imagine only the
Armenians’ reaction when our officials state they would continue the
arm sale to Azerbaijan. We perhaps should put preconditions with the
arm supply,” Solovyov noted.

He then added that Azerbaijan is a beneficial partner to Russia in
terms of economy, although that does not mean that the meeting the
interests of the corrupted elites are in line with the national
interests of Russia.

“I definitely realize we can not afford quarreling with Azerbaijan.
Whether should we betray our CSTO ally? - is the main questions. For
example, Turkey publicly declared it would support Azerbaijan; did we
issue a similar statement with regard to our ally? Let us remember
that Azerbaijan fired at Tavush Province of Armenia That is the
territory of Armenia and the CSTO kept silent about the fact,”
Vladimir Solovyov concluded.

British journalist: Recognition of NKR and sanctions against
Azerbaijan is only solution to Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

POLITICS 15:22 13/04/2016 NKR

If Azerbaijan ever occupied the Nagorno Karabakh Republic
(NKR)/Artsakh by force, as it tried to do by launching a military
offensive on 02-05 April, Artsakh “would be subject to ethnic
cleansing on a wide scale”. Therefore, the formal international
recognition of NKR, backed up by the threat of sanctions against
Azerbaijan, is the only measure that will make the required shift in
the dynamics of the conflict and deter any future aggression. This is
the opinion of British independent journalist, photographer and writer
Russell Pollard, who has visited the NKR/Artsakh more than 10 times,
is well familiar with the life of the Karabakh Armenians, the
realities of the NKR and the conflict on the ground, and has has
portrayed it all with photos on his website.

In an exclusive interview with Nvard Chalikyan from Panorama.am
Russell Pollard also noted that the coverage of Azerbaijan’s recent
aggression on the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR) in the UK media was
scarce, biased and used out-of-date terminology that reinforces
inaccurate stereotypes. “The [media] narrative needs to be focused on
the human rights of the 150,000 citizens of the Nagorno Karabakh
Republic (Artsakh) who simply want to have a normal life and to be
able to live in peace… NKR is not about a war, it is about people who
have lived in adversity for decades, and who continue to thrive
despite this - there is a great human story to be told”, – he said.

Below is the full interview with Russell Pollard.

Nvard Chalikyan: On April 2-5 Azerbaijan launched a full-scale
military attack on the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) which was
in line with Azerbaijan’s previous statements of using force to
conquer NKR. As someone who has been in Artsakh many times and is
familiar with the conflict on the ground, how can you interpret
Azerbaijan's actions and the recent escalation?
Russell Pollard: The cease-fire has been relatively stable for 22
years. It is not in the interests of the people and Government of NKR
to change the military situation as, whilst ever there is peace, there
is hope, and a future. The position of Azerbaijan is diametrically
opposite, and the prolongation of the ceasefire seems to drive a more
entrenched and ideological perspective on the situation. This is
conflated by an irrational need to “take back” Karabakh without any
obvious geo-political value, or concern for the welfare of the
Armenians living there.
Over the last few years as the oil price has dropped, there has been
an increased level of international exposure to the questionable
practices of the Aliyev regime, and a general disquiet amongst the
people of Azerbaijan. The fact that this led to a significant
escalation seemed inevitable as Aliyev tried to divert attention away
from his internal activities. It felt like the actions of a desperate
man.
The first “false ceasefire”, the short-term territorial gains, then
losses, and a renewal of the ceasefire after 3 days, implied to me
that there was a serious error of judgement on Aliyev’s part. The
significant defence spending did not translate into military
superiority, which I’m sure came as a surprise to many people in
Azerbaijan.

N.C.: Azerbaijan claims Nagorno Karabakh is their territory, while it
is a historical fact that Nagorno Karabakh is an indigenous Armenian
land, much older than Azerbaijan itself. What was your impression of
the land of Artsakh when you visited?
Russell Pollard: There are many Armenian churches throughout NKR which
are not recent builds which confirms that Armenians have lived there
for centuries. Historically, Azerbaijanis did live in regions of the
current NKR prior to the war, and whilst this might have been relevant
25 years ago, I don’t believe that this is a factor in considering the
future in 2016.

N.C.: What do you think would happen with Karabakh Armenians should
Azerbaijan succeed in its plans to conquer NKR or as they misleadingly
put it, to “take it back”?
Russell Pollard: NKR was never part of an independent Azerbaijan so
there is not a question of it being “taken back”. If Azerbaijan
occupies NKR by force, then there will be no future for Karabakh
Armenians in those lands. All of the existing state infrastructure
would be removed, and replaced by a much more authoritarian regime
which will not be sympathetic to the Armenian population. The country
will be subject to ethnic cleansing on a wide scale.

N.C.: You have noted before that the only option for the solution of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the recognition of the NKR. Given
Azerbaijan's intentions and actions don't you think the international
recognition of NKR will serve as a deterrent against future aggression
of Azerbaijan?
Russell Pollard: Conflicts such as this will only be solved by the
bold and brave actions of individuals. It will not be solved by the
international community compromising every principle it has to avoid
the smallest risk of upsetting nations who don’t deserve that level of
respect. A modern, humanitarian world is democratic; the
self-determination of people is a fundamental aspect of that. An
approach based on territorial integrity which is contrary to the will
of the people, is medieval.
Formal international recognition, backed up by the threat of
sanctions, is the only measure that will make the required shift in
the dynamics of the conflict and deter any future aggression.
Continuing with the same impotent committees and bland politics that
have been the only options for the last 22 years is no solution, and
will not prevent future escalations.

N.C.: What is your opinion of the coverage of the recent escalation of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the international media in general
and in the British media in particular?
Russell Pollard: I can only really comment on the British media. There
was no coverage of any consequence in the mainstream media and no one
I spoke to was aware that the conflict had re-started even though they
were aware of NKR from my involvement. I’m afraid to say that the
Caucasus is too far away, and too much of an unknown problem, for it
to be considered a priority in the UK media. Also other major
conflicts, together with local matters consume the available media
space. The few reports I read on the internet from the national TV
station were brief, biased, and using terminology like “separatist”,
“breakaway”, “enclave” etc. that are 25 years out of date and that
only serve to reinforce a confused, and inaccurate stereotype. An
objective impression one would get from this reporting is of a highly
militarised group of bandits living in a state-less structure
constantly in conflict with Azerbaijan.

N.C.: What would you say the true state of affairs is? What would be
an accurate presentation of the reality of the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic and of this conflict in the media?
Russell Pollard: The media presentation is very backward looking and
concentrates far too much on why the original war started and does not
clarify the ambiguity of the last months and years of the Soviet
Union. The point of history that should be emphasised is that the
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic became independent from the Soviet Union
before it collapsed and was never part of an independent sovereign
Azerbaijan. Now, this is simply about the self-determination of the
people of NKR.It is important for people to know that NKR is a state
under the definition of the Montevideo convention, namely – it has
permanent population, defined territory, a government, and the
capacity to enter into relations with other states. People should be
aware of the high population of young people in the country (born
since the 1994 cease-fire) who are being educated at all levels, with
a number of Universities, including an active Youth Ministry, and NGO
structure, developments in industry and agriculture, IT and
telecommunications, infrastructure, arts and culture. This is despite
being under economic constraints by the lack of recognition and the
constant threat of attack by Azerbaijan. The narrative needs to be
focused on the human rights of the 150,000 citizens who simply want to
have a normal life and to be able to live in peace, the majority of
whom were born in those lands. In my opinion, NKR is a safe place to
live. The level of violent crime committed from within is negligible
compared to the UK. The only safety concerns are from Azerbaijan. Any
future must be mindful of its security and must assure the protection
of the people of NKR. The recent flare up reaffirms this risk, and
demonstrates why the buffer zones are critical to the defence
policy.NKR, like any country has many very positive attributes, and to
suggest that it is solely defined by the war with Azerbaijan is
narrow-minded lazy journalism. Too many journalists want to
sensationalise, and to concentrate on "exposing" the well-trodden
aspects of the past. NKR is not about a war, it is about people who
have lived in adversity for decades, and who continue to thrive

Armenians gather in rare anti-Russian protest

Agence France Presse

YEREVAN, Armenia: Hundreds of Armenians Wednesday took part in a rare
protest in Yerevan against the country's ally Moscow, demanding that
it stops selling arms to Azerbaijan and pelting the Russian embassy
with eggs.

The crowd, carrying pictures of soldiers and civilians killed in the
recent bout of violence in Nagorno-Karabakh, – a separatist region of
Azerbaijan populated by ethnic Armenians – walked along central
streets shouting anti-Russian slogans and finished by picketing the
embassy.

The rally is not the first following the violence, which left at least
110 people dead earlier this month and ended with a shaky truce, but
it was a first to be directed against Moscow, Yerevan's strategic and
military ally.

"I came here to tell Russians – it's you who is killing our children,
by giving weapons to a potential killer," said 56-year-old Hranush
Serobyan, referring to Azerbaijan.

A Moscow-mediated ceasefire went into effect last week after the worst
outbreak of violence since the 1994 ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh,
where Armenia-backed separatists seized control in the early 1990s war
that claimed some 30,000 lives.

Russia supplies weapons to both Armenia and Azerbaijan and indicated
that it will continue to do so after the recent bloodshed, infuriating
some Armenians. Moscow also maintains a military base in Armenia, a
poor, landlocked country.

"They tell us it's just business," 23-year-old student Vahe Asatryan
said of the arms sales. "Perhaps we made a mistake in choosing an
ally. We don't need an artificial ally."

Some in the crowd shouted "Shame!" and "Free and independent Armenia"
and even pelted the Russian embassy with eggs and coins, as police
attempted to cordon off the building.

Future belongs to right to self-determination: Basque MEP’s
announcement over Nagorno Karabakh

19:02, 13 April, 2016

YEREVAN, APRIL 13, ARMENPRESS. A number of MEPs that observed the
elections in Nagorno Karabakh concluded that the people of that
country live in a well functioning democracy with the existence of
independent judiciary and freedom of speech and media. “Armenpress”
reports Basque MEP Josu Juaristi announced about this during a
discussion at the European Parliament.

“Those people have witnessed extreme crimes and sufferings, have
earned their dignity despite their country is not internationally
recognized. I believe the future belongs to right to their
self-determination. It is possible to reach peace through respect and
recognition”, the MEP mentioned.

In his words, Azerbaijan must give consent to the creation of
mechanisms investigating ceasefire violations proposed by the Minsk
Group. “Without it they will continue to accuse each other of military
operations. We need a constant peacekeeping mission in Karabakh”,
Juaristi mentioned.

AZERBAIJAN
The duty of every Turk is to kill at least one Armenian says an Azeri writer

Meti Osmanoglu, an Azerbaijani scholar specializing in literary
science, shared his memories of a dialogue between the Armenian writer
Levon Adyan, a member of the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan, and the
Azerbaijani translator and literary critic Abbas Abdulla, specialist
literary science.

"I remember conversations with Abbas Abdulla, who said to Levon," the
duty of every Turk is to kill at least one Armenian. Levon, come, I'll
kill you, too, "said Meti Osmanoglu quoted by the website
Moderator.az.

According to sources in Azerbaijan, stories and articles from local
media have recently experienced an increase in the use of insults,
obscene language and unpleasant expressions when speaking about
Armenia and Armenians. In 2014, the head of the Department of
expertise, programming and analysis of the National Television Council
and the Azerbaijani radio, Tavakkul Dadashev, called on Azerbaijani
media to move forward in use of insults in articles about Armenian
subjects, as much as possible.

Siranush Ghazanchyan

The combat and non-battle losses of the Armenian side in the recent
clashes along the line of contact with the Azeri side total 92 people,
the Armenian defense ministry said late on Wednesday.

“As many as 64 servicemen and 13 volunteers and reservists were killed
in clashes along the line of contact on April 2-5,” the ministry said.

Captain Argishti Gaboyan is missing.

Non-battle losses over the period from April2 to April 13 in
conditions of aggravated tensions at the line of contact include nine
servicemen and two militias.

Apart from that, four Nagorno-Karabakh civilians were killed as a
result of the enemy’s criminal actions, the Ministry said.

Azerbaijan fears to release real number of its April 1-5 casualties

12:35, 14 April, 2016

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, ARMENPRESS. The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan
fears to disclose to its own public the real number of casualties
sustained as a result of its aggression against Nagorno Karabakh from
April 1-5.

As “Armenpress” reports, this is evidenced by the total silence of the
Azerbaijani leadership regarding the numerous demands of political
activists to release information about the casualties.

It can be assumed that the real number of casualties is not disclosed
because in reality, Azerbaijan suffered huge losses.

Regarding this, in an interview with musavat.com Azerbaijani military
analyst Uzeyir Jafarov expressed his support to the non-disclosure
position of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry.

According to him, if Azerbaijan releases the real number of its
casualties, the adversary and external forces might “use” it against
Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani pro-leadership analyst urged the public of Azerbaijan
to refrain from such demands, stressing that the Defense Ministry’s
position is “totally correct”.

Uzeyir Jafarov earlier agreed to that fact that the attacking side
always suffers greater loss than the defending side.

The Azerbaijani side released the latest statement on its casualties
on April 3, saying that Azerbaijan has 31 losses, without mentioning
number of wounded or missing.

However, Meydan TV conducted a research and concluded that Azerbaijan
lost 93 soldiers, 34 were wounded and 6 missing in action.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry did not comment on this.

The International Bellingcat analytical organization earlier reported
that Azerbaijan suffered a minimum of 400 killed soldiers.

Despite the ceasefire agreement which was initiated by the Azerbaijani
side on April 5 at 12:00, Azerbaijan continues violating it and opens
fire at Armenian positions and civilian settlements.

According to Nagorno Karabakh Defense Army’s data, during the
Azerbaijani aggression against Nagorno Karabakh from April 1-5, the
Azerbaijani side lost 2 helicopters, 24 tanks, 3 battle vehicles, 1
engineering hardware, 7 UAVs, 1 MM-21 multiple rocket launcher. During
the operations Azerbaijan lost 500 soldiers and 2000 were wounded.

weapons to Azerbaijan, which are being used against Armenians in
Nagorno Karabakh region, albawaba.com reports.

Nasser Atta, a producer for ABC News in the Middle East, tweeted some
photos and videos from the demonstration, which occurred in front of
the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem.

Aida Hadzialic: Such statements have no place in Sweden

POLITICS 18:01 14/04/2016 WORLD

Swedish TV channel TV4 requested Minister for Upper Secondary School,
Adult Education and Training, Aida Hadzialic to comment on the
anti-Armenian statement made by Deputy Chairman of the Turkiska
Riksförbundet, Barbaros Leylani during a demonstration on April 9,
2016 in Sergels Torg Square, Stockholm.

"I am appalled. His statements are hideous. We live in a democratic
country where people believe in human rights protection. Such
statements have no place in Sweden. For me, as someone who has
undergone a process of genocide policy in disintegration of the former
Yugoslavia, thinking about it is repelling. I think this is horrible,”
Hadzialic said.

Chairwoman of ABF Educational and Cultural Union, operating under the
leading Social-Democrats party, Helen Pettersson said that ABF will
discuss cutting their ties with Turkiska Riksförbundet. She said that
such an organization cannot be a member of ABF.

Barbaros Leylani, who had to resign as Deputy Chairman of Turkiska
Riksförbundet, made a remorseful announcement on TV4 on April 13
apologizing in front of the Swedish community.

Armenian community in Sweden welcomed Leylani’s apology, however they
don’t intend to withdraw their case against him.

Russia’s arms sale to Azerbaijan deeply insulting, says Stanislavsky
Theater chief

16:14 • 14.04.16

In an interview with Tert.am, Alexander Grigoryan, the director of the
Stanislavski Russian Theatre of Yerevan, shared his comments upon the
Russia-Armenia relations and the set of values uniting the two
countries and peoples.

Mr Grigoryan, how do you evaluate the strategic ally’s attitude to
Armenia over the past days [since the frontline skirmishes over
Nagorno-Karabakh].

I am confident that frequent and accurate analyses of the situation
will enable Russia to adopt proper positions and decisions in relation
to Armenia.

The situation Armenia and Russia have now found themselves in is very
hard and complicated and - to my mind even - not enviable at all. On
the one hand, they are people and a state very close to us, the
Armenians, as they are willing to offer their assistance in every
initiative, be it economic, political or moral; on the other hand,
though, things are so intricate that I don’t think the Russian
diplomacy is able to find a way out now. And that’s really pity. I
think what we need now is a resolute and unbiased step by Russia,
which may seem abrupt to some. I am not sure, but I feel anyway that
Armenia’s appeal for help will not go unanswered.

After the tragic events in the wake of the four-day war in April, a
deputy prime minister of Russia, Dmitry Rogozin, again declared
[Russia’s] willingness to sell weapons to Azerbaijan. Your comments
please, in that connection.

That statement sounds deeply insulting to me; I don’t think it should
reflect Russian state’s policy. It might have been an individual
opinion by a well-known diplomat as Rogozin. I am strongly against
that.

It is repeatedly stated that Russia pursues complementary policies in
relation to Armenia. What’s your position on that?

My opinion is that the complementarily pursued by Russian high-ranking
servicemen and diplomats has to end at some point. How many times can
one possibly repeat the same thing? A change must be expected. I am
sure Armenia and Russia will, sometime in future, reach the triumph in
the big friendship which really unites these two big states.

Italian MEPs call on Mogherini to impose sanctions on Azerbaiajan

19:25, 14 April, 2016

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, ARMENPRESS. Following the debate in the European
Parliament, two members of Parliament (MEPs) from two different
political groups – Salvatore Pogliese and Remo Sernagiotto have
tabled a written question to Federica Mogherini, EU
High-Representative/Vice-President.

In the document, they underline that the Azerbaijani attacks “are
accompanied by gross violations of international humanitarian law and
international human rights law, particularly the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights, the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional
Protocols of 1977, and the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the
Child.” They especially deplore civilian victims of the conflict,
saying that “Civilian infrastructures and civilian population have
been the main targets of the Azerbaijani offensive. In particular,
among the first victims was a 12-year-old boy. In addition, cases of
mutilation, execution and torture of civilians have been registered
and documented.”

They conclude by asking Ms Mogherini if she is going “to propose
sanctions to be taken against Azerbaijan, given the breaches of the
above-mentioned international law and the very basis of the
EU-Azerbaijan Partnership and Cooperation Agreement”. Lastly, they ask
for EU’s support to “the OSCE Minsk Group proposal on the creation of
a cease-fire violations monitoring mechanism, to avoid continuous
breaches of this only self-regulated truce in Europe.”
European Friends of Armenia (www.EuFoA.org) welcomed this initiative.
“Written questions are an important tool of oversight, including also
EU’s foreign policy” comments EuFoA Director, Mr Eduardo Lorenzo
Ochoa. “More than 6 questions have been tabled on the different
hostilities that Nagorno-Karabakh has suffered in the last 12 months,
which shows the deep concern of the House on this matter”.

President and Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan meet with leaders of the
Crimean Tatars: photofact

17:17, 14 April, 2016

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and
Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met in Istanbul with the leader of
the Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemilev and "chairman" of the Mejlis of
the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov.

“Armenpress” reports the photos documenting that meeting appeared in
the blog of Refat Chubarov.

The photo shows that Ilham Aliyev together with Mammadyarov are
talking to Mustafa Dzhemilev and Refat Chubarov.

Ukrainian media recently reported that, according to leaked secret
documents that appeared on the internet, employees of Ukrainian
special services for a long time followed the activities of Mustafa
Dzhemilev and came to the conclusion that they are working for the
Turkish intelligence, posing a threat to national security.

Note that on January 21, 2016 the Kiev District Court of Simferopol in
absentia arrested Mustafa Dzhemilev. With regard to Dzhemilev,
declared the federal wanted list, a criminal case was filed under
three articles of the Russian Criminal Code relating to terrorism and
undermining the foundations of Russian national security.

On February 15 the prosecutor of the Republic of Crimea Natalia
Poklonskaya filed a lawsuit to the Supreme Court of the Republic of
Crimea to ban the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people and to recognize
it as an extremist organization. On April 13, 2016 the Court issued a
decision to suspend the organization's activities before the judicial
investigation of the case.

10-12-2016 00:03:53 | Armenia | Social

During the last events took place in the contact line of
Nagorno-Karabakh - Azerbaijani opposing forces the actions of Armenian

I think, Azerbaijan undertake all this for money laundering.

by freedom fighter, colonel, president of Women Freedom Fighter Union
Aida Serobyan.

According to her there have been a lot of shootings during cease-fire
but the sudden attack and aggression of Azerbaijan was not surprising,
moreover the soldiers serving in the Armenian army were not
intimidated.

“During The Nagorno-Karabakh war as well as during this four-day war
mercenaries, militants of Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS)
militant group were fighting against Armenian soldiers but Armenian
soldier proved that good armament and preparedness are not everything.
The latter said that Armenian soldier has always proved that the
demand of Armenians is fair and victory is inescapable.
“Even God knows that we have much to do in terms of liberating
Armenian territories, our captivated lands, Nakhijevan, Western
Armenia, Shahumyan, should liberate.
A Serobyan assures, as during The Nagorno-Karabakh war now also
Armenian girls and women showed that they are ready to fight against
the enemy.
She wished patience, peace and tears of happiness all the mothers who
lost their sons:” I think as in Israel in Armenia also girls should
serve in the army''.
According to woman colonel, we should not let Azerbaijani get on its
feet again: '' When they lift, we should break their knee as we do
during these four days.''

NKR Defense Ministry links Azerbaijani misinformation with intention
to artificially intensify situation

20:28, 14 April, 2016

YEREVAN, APRIL 14, ARMENPRESS. The press service of Artsakh Defense
Ministry has announced that “Spreading information by the Defense
Ministry of Azerbaijan about the death of junior sergeant of
Azerbaijani armed forces Rustam Ahmedov on April 14 which allegedly
took place because of the Armenian side, is nothing more but
misinformation for the purpose to artificially intensify the
situation.

NKR Defense Ministry informs “Armenpress” that “The verbal agreement
on the ceasefire on the contact line of Karabakh-Azerbaijan opposing
forces was mainly respected during the day with the exception of a
number of cases of violation, which was committed by no one else than
the adversary. Particularly, at about 12:10 the Azerbaijani armed
forces used 82 mm mortar (2 projectiles) in the eastern direction
(Martuni) of the front line and AGS-17 grenade launcher (6
projectiles) at about 15:25 in the south eastern direction (Hadrut)
direction.

It is not excluded that by spreading the information about the death
of the soldier the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry starts to reveal the
range of 100s of casualties that were killed during the clashes of
April 2-5, which has been kept strictly confidential up till now.

Dissemination of press releases with similar content aimed at
disguising their failed military aggression is expected by Azerbaijani
Defense Ministry in the near future”.

Why USA can't say the same thing as Canada? Are they scared of azeri retaliation?

Canadian Senator Thanh Hai Ngo: Attacks were initiated by Azerbaijan

April 14, 2016

Senator Ngo calls for a peaceful solution in Nagorno-Karabakh

“The armed clashes that escalated along the borders of
Nagorno-Karabagh during the first week of April 2016 was a time of
deep concern.

“As reported, these violent attacks initiated by Azerbaijanhave led to
the worst escalation of violence in that region since 1994. Which is
why I am pleased to learn that a ceasefire between the Armenian and

Armenian Ambassador brings Azerbaijani war crimes to the attention of
OSCE Permanent Council

12:44, 15 Apr 2016
Siranush Ghazanchyan

Head of the Armenian Mission to the OSCE, Ambassador Aram Kirakosyan
briefed the OSCE Permanent Council on the violations of the
international humanitarian law by Azerbaijan.

The Ambassador noted that Azerbaijan targeted populated areas and
civilians, including children and elderly people, in Nagorno Karabakh
during the recent large-scale attack. One of the first victims was
Vagharshak Grigoryan, 12, who was killed as a result of shelling from
Grad system on his way to school, while two other children were
injured.

The Ambassador referred to the torture and cruel killing of three
members of a family in the village of Talish. He added that servicemen
Hayk Toroyan, Hrant Gharibyan and Karam Sloyan were beheaded in a
style peculiar to the Islamic State terrorist organization.

The Azerbaijani social media were flooded with photos of tortured
Armenians soldiers. The bodies that Azerbaijan returned to the
Armenian side with the mediation of the ICRC and the Office of the
Personal representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office had signs of
mutilation.

Ambassador Kirakosyan stressed that such barbaric acts contradict the
elementary norms of the civilized world, constitute violations of the
basic principles of international documents, including the Universal
declaration of Human Rights, the Convention of Children’s’ Rights, the
Geneva Conventions and the Additional Protocols and amount to war
crimes.

Arman Kirakosyan informed that criminal cases have been launched by
the Karabakh authorities to investigate all circumstances. He stressed
the importance of condemnation of the crimes and the punishment of the
perpetrators.
