Cowpaths and Skyways.

I was there during those dark days. A lone mason was hard at work restoring the convent. It was during those days when there was not even a light bulb in use, not one factory in function, not a school in operation. I could not hold my tongue. I asked him why so much energy and money was being wasted on a pile of rocks. His answer was something like “We have to rebuild the house of God before we come to the house of man”. He did not say it, but let me put words in his mouth. “We are doing this to suck 'christian/shcmrischen' diasporan suckers like you” . I hate to say this. At the time the place looked like HELL with dead and dying plants and weeds all over. I’d like to see it now to see how many of those dead weeds have blossomed.

As always, Tatev or any other monastery are not built as a church for the thousands of the faithful but a ten man apse for the monks. My kitchen is larger than the largest of them all, including Ejmiatsin.

We had a baptism at this church. There were less than a dozen of us, but we could not even fit standing up. I Hate to tell you what the surroundings looked like. Who are we kidding?

Nobody goes there to pray on Sunday. Only tourist for special occasions.

Armenians are funny NOT!!! They deserve the “comedy of the millennium award”.

Look what they are talking about. Even before we become citizens of this earth we are building highways in the sky.

(I have been there. It is ridiculous). How about build a road for esheks, pedestrians, and Aramazt forbid a road for mechanized road vehicles???

Do we know the meaning of “cowpath? It is where cows walked home on which today’s super highways are constructed..

Tatev aerial tramway, breakthrough in area tourism, set for October opening

by Paul Chaderjian

Published: Friday July 16, 2010

Tatev, Armenia - Hundreds of visionaries, philanthropists, government and church officials, and community leaders will gather at the ancient Tatev Monastery in southern Armenia on Saturday, October 16, 2010, for the launch of the innovative and forward-thinking Tatev Revival Project.

"Tatev is one of our historic landmarks. It's a crown jewel in our cultural heritage and was for centuries a major focal point and religious center for our people. It was also where we studied theology, humanities, the sciences, and created art and literature," said Zarmine Zeitountsian, Fundraising Coordinator of the Tatev Revival Project. "Tatev is a 9th century landmark that, due to natural causes and centuries of neglect, is now in serious need of conservation and restoration."

The Tatev monastic complex underwent a flawed and unfinished renovation attempt in the 1980s under Soviet rule. Rain and snow continue to threaten the stability of the ancient structures and seep through to interiors causing more damage.

"There's still a massive construction crane from the renovation attempt, and it's been standing in the middle of the courtyard for the last 30 years," said Zeitountsian. "The work that was attempted in the 80s is historically inaccurate and unbefitting. It is important not only to conserve the structures of the Monastery, protecting them from deterioration, but also to undo some of the inappropriate interventions such as the hotel lobby-like marble floors in the holy St. Paul and Peter Church, and to restore some collapsed components such as the ancient monk cells."

Spearheading the massive $50-million Tatev Revival Project on behalf of a group of stakeholders, including the Armenian Government and Church, benefactors and the Armenian people is the National Competitiveness Foundation of Armenia.

This public-private partnership tackles breakthrough, strategic projects that act as catalysts for long-term development. Competitiveness Foundation projects trigger both government and private investments in sectors like tourism, education, and healthcare. Economists have identified these sectors as ones that will make Armenia globally competitive.

"Our challenge was not just to renovate the monastery, but to ensure that it will live, become active and self-sustaining," said Competitiveness Foundation CEO, Pegor Papazian. "Tatev is part of our Southern Armenia Tourism Corridor, where we have designed and are developing projects that are designed to create excitement and inspire confidence, so that our intervention will trigger further development. We are zoning and creating a master plan for the region, so that we can direct development and mobilize investments while protecting nature and the rural environment."

The far-sighted Tatev Revival Project will launch in October with the grand opening of the $13 million aerial tramway. Already under construction since last fall, this 5.7-kilometer (3.5-mile) aerial tramway - the world's longest teleferic - will allow visitors to bypass a 90-minute drive in and out of the rocky Vorotan River Gorge to reach the monastery. It will link Armenia's main regional highway to the village of Tatev.

"We have a very diverse group of donors, including quite a few non-Armenians and people of different faiths - Christian, Jewish and Muslim. As a result of their contributions, the 9th century Tatev complex may be reached by taking a 10-minute ride," said Zeitountsian. "This tramway will take visitors over picturesque green hills, steep cliffs, and the rushing white waters of the Vorotan River. In itself, it will be an impressive tourist attraction."

The Ruben and Veronica Vardanian and Friends Foundation is the main benefactor of the Halidzor-Tatev tramway construction. Several sponsors have also committed to covering the maintenance and operating costs of the Swiss-built ropeway. It will operate year-round, to allow tourists from around the globe to experience Tatev during all seasons, even during snow-covered winters.

"With our investors committed to the project, we also have Armenia's taxpayers and government stepping up to reconstruct and repave the roads leading to Halidzor and Tatev and to strengthen the area's infrastructure," said Zara Amatuni, Competitiveness Foundation Outreach Manager. "There are other investors looking into developing community-based tourism activities, hotels, bed and breakfasts, and eateries."

Among the many innovative breakthrough development programs in the Tatev Revival Project are the renewal of Tatev's monastic traditions, an arts and crafts revival, and culinary tourism. These sophisticated, multi-faceted projects are ambitious and reflect a long-term perspective.

"People value food, especially authentic ethnic food, and we want to make the region's cuisine more accessible. We want to revive old and forgotten recipes, use local ingredients to create new dishes, and offer tourists and global markets a new take on Armenian cuisine," said Papazian. "The same ideology will be applied to arts and craft revival, which will help make Armenia more competitive as a tourism destination. Projects such as these will result in economic growth that will naturally lead to more jobs, reduced migration, and a sustainable economy."

The monastic revival component of the Tatev Revival Project will bring back to life a time when Tatev was home to more than 500 monks and a thriving university that excelled in scientific, literary, and religious studies. In its heyday, Tatev was at the leading edge of education. Today, plans are in the works to make the monastery attractive for students, artists, academics and even pilgrims. The monastery has the potential to become a center for academic conferences, research projects, workshops, summer camps, science fairs, musical concerts, lectures, retreats, and sabbaticals.

"We are attracting financing and plugging Armenia into global networks and markets," said Papazian. "We want people to choose Armenia over another country they might be considering next time they plan their vacation. We want to be competitive across sectors, and especially in tourism, healthcare, and education which have great unrealized potential."

Doing something to develop tourism and the region is better then nothing.I don't understand your negativity.Sure other things can be developed but frankly generating cash in poor country like Armenia should be encouraged and not ridiculed.

Tourists go places that have interesting things to see....old churches are of interest considering we don't have castles,Parthenon etc. What we do have should be developed.

http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/WORLD/meast/06/09/armenia.old.shoe/story.old.shoe.armenia.jpg

Archaeologists in Bulgaria chttp://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/WORLD/meast/06/09/armenia.old.shoe/story.old.shoe.armenia.jpglaim they have found remains of John the Baptist while excavating the site of a 5th century monastery on the Black Sea island of Sveti Ivan. A reliquary – a container for holy relics – discovered last week under the monastery’s basilica was opened on Sunday and found to contain bone fragments of a skull, a hand and a tooth, Bulgaria’s official news agency BTA reported.

Excavation leader Kazimir Popkonstantinov lifted the reliquary’s lid in a ceremony in the coastal town of Sozopol attended by dignitaries including the Bishop of Sliven, Yoanikii, and Bozhidar Dimitrov, a government minister and director of Bulgaria’s National History Museum, BTA said.

Further tests on the fragments are due to be carried out. But Popkonstantinov is convinced the relics belong to John the Baptist because of a Greek inscription on the reliquary referring to June 24, the date when Christians celebrate John the Baptist’s birth, according to the website of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

A later monastery on the island, built in the 11th century, was dedicated to John the Baptist – "Sveti Ivan" means "St. John" in Bulgarian and other Slavic languages. Popkonstantinov told Bulgarian news agency Focus that it was possible the earlier basilica was also dedicated to the saint…..

Ungreatful Europeans!!!!!!!! :P :D

TURKS TAUGHT EUROPEANS TO WASH UP, TURKISH MINISTER SAYS

news.am

Aug 19 2010

Armenia

Turkish Defense Minster Vecdi Gonul made a real "discovery" during

agitation campaign of the constitutional reforms.

He stressed importance of the referendum, saying that Europeans learnt

how to wash from Turks. According to him, Turkish people also informed

Europeans of human rights defenders.

"Sweden's King Carl was defeated by Russians and found shelter in

Turkey where he lived for a long period of time. In Turkey he saw

a person named Kadi who was protecting homeless and rights of those

suffering from lawlessness. The King applied his knowledge after he

returned to Sweden. Besides, Turks taught Europeans to wash up.

Christians only washed with holy water at birth and did not wash

any more. Thus, perfume was so poplar in France. The King saw that

washing is useful and told about it to Swedish people, as soon as

he returned to the Motherland," the Turkish Defense Minister said,

speaking in Izmir.

Turkish vice-premier advised to circumcise Kurds

August 23, 2010 | 12:38

Selahattin Demirtaş, an MP for Democratic Society Party (DTP), the only Kurdish party in the Turkish Parliament, gave a rather adverse response to the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Çiçek’s anti-Armenian statement. He advised Çiçek to circumcise Kurds himself.

Responding to Çiçek’s statement that some members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) are uncircumcised, which means a lot, (namely, that they are allegedly Armenians), Demirtaş advised the Turkish Government to silence Çiçek if they really want to resolve the Kurdish problem, Firat news agency reports.

To deceive the public Çiçek claims the PKK insurgents are uncircumcised. He thinks the Kurdish problem is a matter of circumcision rather than of identity, language and culture of the Kurdish people. If he thinks so, let him to go Qandil Mountains (northern Iraq) and resolve the problem, Demirtaş said.

At his meeting with businessmen, the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister spoke of terrorism in the 1980s. In this context he pointed out close ties between the Armenian “terrorism” and the PKK terrorism. He claimed some of the PKK members are not circumcised, which means they are Armenians.

See what Nubar Dorian wrote in the Mirror, under the topic of ARMENIAN DREAM in AMERICA. (I can’t find it on the net)/

Quote.

“There are a huge segmentof our children who do not even know where Armenia is on the map and view, almost with scorn, all things Armenian…”

Like they scorn dolma, sarma, basturma, imam bayildi, patljan, kabakh, chi kufta, shish kebab etc.?

Do we speak Armenian? Do the likes of Nubar Dorian speak Aremnian?

Or, is the Armenmian Language a “dialect” of furkish?

Only when we stop speaking furkish???

No matter how many times I have urged our dear friends to not use such terms as ammoyi aghjik@, ammoyi t@ghan , instead “hobar-aghjik, hopar-ordi", and stop introducing me as ammo/dayi. I am not 'ammo” neither am I "dayi”. I am horeghbayr/hobar” or “moreghbayr/mobar”,

Neither are hamid or talaat our uncles.

Is he our uncle/“ammo” Hamid

Or is he our uncle “dayi“ talaat;

Turkish FM arrives at Armenia-Turkey border

Davutoglu again brings unfounded charges against Armenia

September 02, 2010 | 11:13

Arriving in the eastern province Igdir, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu tried to conceal the Turkish authorities’ irresponsibility for the Armenia-Turkey process and strangely accused Armenia of the closed border.

On the way to Igdir, Davutoglu called at a Halikilsa village near the Armenia-Turkey border, talked with local residents, approached the River Akhuryan, considered the natural border between Armenia and Turkey, Turkish Zaman daily reports.

Turkish FM told the residents Yerevan is responsible for Armenia-Turkey closed border, stressing it will open only after Armenia stops the “annexation of the Azerbaijani territories”.

Turkish leaders have fallen into a habit of deceiving their citizens, laying the blame for a closed border on Armenia. Probably, Davutoglu considers the people in the border regions of Turkey, expecting the border opening, are not aware Turkey signed a document, providing the establishment of relations without preconditions. Davutoglu’s statements just reveal the true face of official Ankara.

Armenians ready to invest millions in Turkey?

September 16, 2010 | 13:03

The permission for a liturgy at Surb Khach church on Akhtamar Island in Van appears to match Turkey’s expectations. Zahir Kandasoglu, Chairman of the Van Chamber of Commerce and Industry, reported that Armenian and Turkish businessmen plan to implement three large-scale investment projects in Van.

Kandasoglu reported that the businessmen plan to borrow €100m from a U.S. bank to found an airline. “At the initial stage, we will purchase two planes for Yerevan-Van flights,” he said.

Kandasoglu said that a representative of Armenia’s tourist industry asked for land to construct a 5-star hotel in Van, which requires U.S. $50m investments. “Our only aim is to create wealth by doing business. The liturgy is one of the occasions. A few days ago I submitted my report on my meetings in Yerevan and opening of the Armenian-Turkish border to Turkish Premier Recep Erdogan. Our term is trade, which is impossible with the border with Armenia closed. Armenia has a serious market, and we cannot leave it unnoticed,” Kandasoglu said.

Star Gazing: Armenia hopes to shine in study of astronomy

Byurakan Observatory

By Siranuysh Gevorgyan

ArmeniaNow reporter

Armenia has intentions to become a regional center of astronomy, pending approval of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) of a proposal submitted by the Armenian Astronomical Society that would give Armenia a chance to develop the science.

Areg Mikaelyan, Co-Chairman of the Armenian Astronomical Society, says Armenia has favorable chances to exploit astronomy, given its background of study dating to Soviet times and its observatory in Byurakan.

Astronomy started developing in Armenia in the 1940s, when prominent astronomer Viktor Hambardzumyan, founded the Byurakan station. In 1961-63, Hambardzumyan was chairman of IAU. This year IAU held its International Schools for Young Astronomers in Armenia, the first time the school had been held in a post-Soviet country.

ARMENIA MAY BECOME REGIONAL ASTROLOGICAL CENTER

Armenia

Viktor Hambardzumyan Byrakan Observatory may become a regional

astrological center, scientific worker of the observatory, co-chairman

of the Armenian Astrological Company Areg Mikaelyan told reporters

today.

According to him, the International Astrological Union (IAU) is intent

to establish 8 regional centers of astrology worldwide, including

one in our region. Iran, Egypt, United Arab Emirates are also among

the countries pretending to host the center, though they don't have

enough potential but are ready to invest large financial means for

it. All these countries and others have submitted applications with

the International Astronomical Union. By the end of the year the IAU

Executive Board will make a decision on it.

"If the IAU chooses Armenia as a regional center, it will provide

additional means of about 50 000 USD for implementation of programs.

But our country on its part must financially assist, too, for ensuring

necessary devices and salaries for the employees of the sphere,"

he said. According to him, Armenia's trump card** is that astrology is

developed in our country and we have a school..

Of late we have seen stories of how the kurds and furks of Van were befriending diasporan Armenian pilgrims at Aghtamar to learn the locations of hidden treasures. :jester:

Note. Read the below “maras” as “Marash”. Was that house where they started digging the tunnel my ancestors’ house? Did they find gold or dirt, or did they find the bones of our ancestors?

Turks dug 43-meter tunnel to find Armenian treasure

October 08, 2010 | 10:30

Four Turks tried to find “Armenian treasure”, digging a tunnel of 43 meters in the Maras province of Turkey that used to be Armenian-populated before 1915.

Three treasure hunters thought they had found a place of historic church under Karaelbistan cemetery in Maras and started digging a tunnel to the church from the house of their friend, Milliyet reported.

Turks dug a 43-meter tunnel within 3 months, reached the door with a cross but failed to open it as they were scared to find a trap or toxic gas inside.

As a result of an argument between the diggers, owner of the house called gendarmerie. All participants of a “secret operation” were taken to police and released after giving testimony.

Turkish Website Director Gets 11 Months for “Disparaging” Comment

[ 2010/11/04 | 16:57 ] region

Convicted of publishing “Gul is Armenian” comment

Cem Buyukcakir, General Director of the Turkish “Haberin Yeri” website, has received an eleven-month prison sentence on the grounds of having published a reader comment that implied that President Abdullah Gul has Armenian roots, according to a report in Bianet.

At the end of September, Istanbul’s Third Civil Court of First Instance convicted Buyukcakir of “insulting President Gul”. The founder of the “HaberinYeri” website removed the comment as soon as he had been issued a warning. The journalist announced that the sentence was neither dropped nor converted into a monetary fine. Buyukcakir is currently preparing an appeal.

The trial was opened upon a complaint by the Presidential Office. Buyukcakir’s attorney claimed that the publisher was not responsible for the reader comments and requested to drop the procedures. She pointed to the possibility of disclosing the identity of the person who posted the comment and demanded to appoint an expert.

Azerbaijanis in Sweden send protest letter to UNESCO

Sat 13 November 2010 13:58 GMT | 15:58 Local Time

Congress of Azerbaijanis in Sweden sent a letter of protest to UNESCO

Secretary General Irina Bokova.

'Having seen the `Armenian cross-stones' file on your website we

cannot but express our feelings of bitterness and profound regret that

the question is to be discussed at the organization's 5th session in

Kenya from 15 to 19 November 2010. As an entity in Sweden that unites

in its ranks many ethnic Azerbaijanis from all walks of life we think

it vital to draw your attention to the forged nature of the Armenian

document.

Authors of the `Armenian cross-stones' file make a deliberately false

recourse to the symbols of ancient Azerbaijani crosses that go back to

the period of Caucasian Albania. It can only be construed as a false

attribution of purely Azerbaijani historical monuments to Armenia thus

depriving our people from a significant part of our cultural and

historical heritage', said the Congress in its letter.'

It is particularly frustrating that the file claims that `in the

course of Armenia's tumultuous history, the khachkars have passed

through different periods - from thriving to suppression (during

various invasions), oblivion (Soviet atheism), or even destruction

(aftermath of military conflict)'. In that respect we firmly believe

that all references to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over

Nagorno-Karabakh run counter UNESCO's declared aims. It is noteworthy

that placing Nagorno-Karabakh - an integral part of the Republic of

Azerbaijan - amongst sovereign states of the world bluntly violates

all known norms of International Law.

It is a well-known fact that as much as one fifth of Azerbaijan's

territory, unfortunately still under the Armenian occupation, incurred

the horror of barbaric destruction of all Azerbaijani historical

monuments. Ancient Azerbaijani cross-carved-stones from the period of

Caucasian Albania have been either demolished or forged. We believe

that the forged file could lead to a surge of hatred and animosity

among the peoples of the region, as well as to dangerous implications

for the inter-ethnic dialogue and cooperation'.

In the end of the letter, the Congress writes: 'As a corollary, we

herewith express our most respectful and insistent request that you

spare no efforts to stop the nomination of the `Armenian cross-stones'

file at the meeting to be held between 15 and 19 November 2010. It is

also our sincere hope that should any matter that runs counter

Azerbaijan arise in your organization, you will prevent its further

development'.
