You've got to hand it to them. That they thought of something like this. That's some excellent publicity stunt on their behalf. We were badly caught off guard.

I know that the International Herald Tribune and all its subsidiaries (El Pais, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Ha'aretz, etc.) was initially going to publish a special edition on the Armenian Genocide on April 24th, but it was never realised for some reason. I think the Turks got hold of the news beforehand and derailed the whole thing. Then they struck back with this.

The special edition was prepared by the Armenian Weekly and is very extensive in scope and length (5000 words+). I read the whole thing and there are some excellent articles in there.

This is the email i sent to Time Europe Magazine's editorial staff :

Dear editorial staff,

I am writing to you concerning the DVD included in Time Magazine's current issue you sent to all your subscribers in Europe. A friend of mine received it.

In this DVD, there are one or two matters which i feel i should bring to your attention. During more than one hour, the Armenian genocide is denied and Armenians are accused of having committed "a Turkish genocide". Moreover, Armenians are described as "terrorists" and "fascists". It is simply disgusting !

What is their guilt ? Seeking redress ?

The Armenian genocide has officially been recognized by the United Nations, the European parliament and many states like France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Armenia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland, Lebanon, Russia, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay and the Vatican City. Moreover, 38 states of the USA, the Australian state of New South Wales and the greatest historians in the world have recognized it too.

During the Armenian genocide, more than 1.5 million of Armenian civilians were massacred, beheaded, tortured, raped and ripped up by Turkish soldiers.

90 years after, Turkey still occupies the greater part of ancient Armenia, denies the Armenian genocide, maintains a negationnist policy and spreads it throughout the world.

Time Magazine's matters are very important because by sending this DVD to all its subscribers in Europe, Time Magazine could be impeached for negationnism. Legal proceedings could be started.

That's why by way of moral redress, Time Magazine could send an apologetic letter to all its subscribers in Europe concerning all the mistaken informations about the Armenian genocide contained in the DVD as soon as possible.

Moreover, Time Magazine could send a DVD to all its subscribers in Europe in which there would be the report which was devoted to the Armenian genocide on ABC (http://www.theforgotten.org/site/intro_eng.html) or Atom Egoyan's film "Ararat" as soon as possible in order to restore the truth.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully.

Mr. Benjamin Kasparian, France.

I sent the same email through ANCA using my mom's name (the TIME account is under her name) and I also sent another email through TIME's customer service, again under the account name. The second email is not long and detailed, and I didn't write that I'm an Armenian. I just said that I'm very disappointed (something in that line in three short paragraphs). I haven't received any answer.

We didn't cancel TIME.

Anoushik, maybe you got a response from a computer.

style_images/master/snapback.png

That's what I thought too. Surprisingly I could reply back to that email. (Maybe it shows that it wasn't just the computer that sent this email. Also, they must have sent something, otherwise why the evaluation email?) I replied that I hadn't received any response. I doubt I'll have a response.

Complete the survey and give them NEGATIVE feedback :)

Yes, of course :D

Exactly.

(For those who don't know, TIME Warner, one of those big merged companies.)

style_images/master/snapback.png

I believe Gerald Levin is the CEO of Time Warner Communications.

I also believe that since Armenians never objected when they should have, to such absurd full page ads with statements like "For 10,000 years Turkey has endured" , I guess they decided to take it to the next level since Armenians don't mind getting walked all over and spit upon.

you have to take into consideration the effects of the rest nontheless, and that many foreigners don't know much about mccary or weems or the genocide subject itself. So what they see is just the word "professor" followed by what they will listen to

That's right. They are using whatever it takes to form or de-form a public opinion to suit their interests. In this case it takes shameless lies and manipulations to deceive the unknowing public. Let's face it, the truth is they have accomplished much.

Not having seen the DVD, and having read the snippets posted in ANCA website I will say this: It is good that they did it!!

first of all any mention of Sam Weems anywhere totally discredits the Turkish side, his title of the book "Christian Terrorist State" alone is a red flag to be attacked and discredited.

secondly, these kinds of attacks are like viruses attacking our bodies, we'll sneeze for a little while then develop immunity against future attacks, provided we take care of ourselves...and work proactively to neutralize these viruses BEFORE they do any damage. So let's wake up and work, each one of us, on a personal initiative, can do tremendous amount of damage to this huge Turkish propaganda machine.

I have the same first reaction like Gamavor to smash things around for giving these people the opportunity to serve their throw-ups to unsuspecting Time customers. But better "cure" would be unrelenting work to silence all these puppets and bring them to accountability.

For example Time can be sued for giving a platform for hate mongers. Today, Time agrees with Sam Weems that Armenia is a "Christian Terrorist State" well then, let them prove in international courts that this is a true statement. Or retract with full apology and be given the platform to the Armenians to tell the full truth about the Genocide. and as a punishment they should be forced to have a permanent link on their website to an Armenian Genocide site.

This is the reason that I'm not too sad for this stupid masquerade.

Racist pig. I can't believe he actually said that.

Dear Mr. Geary (edit_office@timemagazine.com),

With all due respect, I must ask you please to just watch the piece

of film that was attached to the Turkish tourism advertisement, if you have not done

so already - and then kindly reconsider the mass statement that you are sending to

those of us who wrote to TIME. As an "independent magazine that does not endorse

the views of any organization or government", there's a pretty hearty sense of

contradiction lingering in the air. Mind you, I realize that it is your job to deal

with these kinds of issues in a standardized manner - and of course the harshness of

my words are not directed personally toward you - but rather to the broader

decision-making apparatus that enabled this horrifying "blooper" to take place. If

there was any semblance of proper research inquiry, balance, or objectivity in the

piece, as a scholar myself I would be loathe to criticize it. However the tone,

content and purpose of this piece of work from beginning to end is so full of hatred

and bigotry that I am FLOORED that TIME magazine could circulate such a thing -

intentionally or not. I am thus drawn to consider other logical questions - like

for example, if someone is willing to pay TIME enough money - is it possible to see

a DVD sponsored by denialists of the Cambodian genocide? Or a little backyard

production made by Hutus about Rwanda? A little pro-Milosevic party line, anyone?

Or maybe a little neo-Nazi parade denying the Holocaust? Following the example set

by TIME, one is left to ponder how money could possibly come close to buying "truth"

(a word so oft-repeated on the segment in question), as long as one throws in a

little advertising about some beautiful Turkish beaches and historical monuments.

If this was all rather an oversight on the part of the Staff of your magazine to

assess and approve content for advertising blocs, then this too is gravely alarming.

There is no excuse. Two days ago I attended a classical music concert event at

Victoria Hall in Geneva, Switzerland - as part of Geneva's annual "Fete de la

Musique"; over 1,000 people from all over the world were in attendance, and special

attention just before the performance was drawn to the decision of TIME magazine to

circulate this DVD. It appears that law suits are being mobilized against TIME,

quite suitably in a country in which it is literally illegal to deny genocide. The

same way, incidentally, that it is illegal in Turkey to utter the word "genocide" in

the affirmative, in this context. The entire Concert Hall in Geneva, Switzerland

was silent - and visibly aghast at the outrageous disregard of TIME for the

suffering of innocent people at the turn of the 20th century. This is but the

normal reaction of those who know their history and the consequence of denying

horrifying crimes - and even worse, characterizing victims as perpetrators. In sum,

a lot of people, including myself, can no longer view TIME magazine as a newsworthy,

credible, or intelligent source of information. I daresay that this may have a few

ripple effects over time. My well-intentioned advice: A public apology for the

bigoted, racist and inflammatory content of your "tourism DVD", and the publication

of selected "letters to the editor". I will make it a personal point to circulate

this TIME-sponsored DVD to all those in my academic/professional/social circles in

the United States as well - so that they can see for themselves what is being

circulated by TIME in Europe. I would be happy to hear from you or any of your

staff should TIME be interested in incorporating public feedback toward a

constructive strategy to make amends for this grossly misguided presentation of

information, and to prevent such a thing from ever happening again.

Sincerely,

Dr. Audrey Selian

Dear Audrey Selian,

Thank you for your email regarding the DVD that accompanied an advertisement for

Turkish tourism.

TIME is an independent newsmagazine and does not endorse the views of any

organization or government. We regret any offense caused by the advertisement.

Sincerely,

James Geary

This sort of cold answer is disgusting.

After searching a little, I have discovered that Times has not been all that unbiased in the treatment of the Armenians. Not so long ago, bring back ASALA in one of their articles, or before using the figure of 500,000 as number of victims etc.

And their answer doesn't make that much sense. Maybe I should ask Zundel to write to them and request some advertisement of his texts through Time magazine, as it was done with McCarthy etc...

There is a nice project, if one Vava could FINALLY get the DVD.
