Hostile?

You ain't seen not'n yet!

To know what hostility is please read the posts by Elia, GorGor and Shahan.

I, as one born and raised in the so called WA environment, have every right to be hostile when the above insult and murder our saints like Varuzhan and company, they insult and murder our most sacred Saint Mashtots suggesting that he was a moron for designing several variants of many of our consonants if those were to sound the same. They insult the memory of St. Mesrop when they insist that our teaching our children the AyP Pen Qim Ta. Hostility is when our above friends suggest that Istanbul Armenian, I call it turkahayeren is the more civilized and correct one and that EA is uncivilized peasant language. When they suggest that WA is the legitimate heir to Grabar. When GorGor insists that “gor” is proper Armenian. Please show us where and when did Varuzhan, our god of western Armenian used the term.

I have every right to be hostile when our sacred language of the likes of Siamanto is dragged down the streets of Beirut and Glendale. When the above insist that WA is the correct one yet, in their deafness don’t even know the difference between “hajogh/successful” and “hachogh/barking”, between “haraj/forward” and “harach/sigh”, don’t know the difference between “door/door” and “toor/chisel”.between “gar/lamb” and qar/stone”.

Zorn asem zorn khostovanem!!

I have said this before. The way the above are murdering and burying our language they need nobody’s help. They are doing an excellent job.

Further. Has any of the above posted any literary gems from our WA geniuses? Do they read the wonderful languages of Varuzhan, Siamanto, Otian, Tekeyan or Chobanian, to mention a few. Or is their idea of WA is that Turk Armenian as spoken in the gutters of Bourj Hammoud?

If all those consonants were meant to sound the same, then why does Varuzhan write;

And not;

I have to think that we just don't understand your point. You can't be this crazy. You just can't.

You are hung up on the most minor, pedantic points. OH MY GOSH! They say chisel and door the same!!! OH MY GOSH! Like "night" and "knight", we should go back to middle english and pronounce the latter as "k-night" so we don't get confused!!! [also, that's not really true, do WA'ers pronounce both r's the same, I have never noticed, but the word for "door" has a longer "r" at the end than "chisel"...which is another difference, anyway...]

Arpa, what you are also missing is that Mashtots did intend the letters to carry different sounds, but not all are exactly the same as Eastern either. That's the point. If you look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_alphabet (which I think is actually pretty accurate), you see that some of the letters deviate from modern EA pronunciation as well...

Also, you can't call Western Armenian "tourkahayeren", but then distinguish between Eastern Armenian and "rusahayeren" or "parskahayeren"...all dialects of Armenian have been influenced by other languages, just as ALL LANGUAGES HAVE BEEN!

Arpa, just tell us what you want us to do. Seriously, what do you want? Do you want there to be no more Western Armenian? Or just no more of a certain type of Western Armenian? It's simply not clear because your writing is not clear (in English). Tell us what your ideal world would look like if we all decided to follow your plan for Armenian (I am serious...I want to know)

Is it just a matter of us saying "Zangou Chicken"? Or speaking Western Armenian without any Turkish and pronouncing the letters in an EA fashion? Try to calm down and write clearly...it's a skill you should learn anyway (no offense, but it's VERY hard to understand your points because your writing is incoherent)

Incoherent?

My points are the most coherent of them all.

Your English is apparently inadequate.

Incoherent is when a linguistic subject becomes a political battle, and another reason for division, "ours is correct, yours is peasant" etc.

Specially considering how graceful and gracious those eastern speakers have been while our western heroes have not spared any insults.

One more thing. You read wikipedia, mickey mouse media.

(1) I don't think wikipedia is the gospel, but as I said, I agree with what it says from my own experience. In that case, I am using it not as support for what I am saying but as an exemplar of what I am saying. You have yet to explain how it's different.

(2) You are the one saying things are "peasant' and what not. People here seem (to me) to be responding to your aggressive affront on the WA dialect.

(3) Why won't you answer the question about what you want to see done differently in terms of the use and roles of Eastern and Western Armenian?

(4) You have been clear only to extent that you believe that Western Armenian is a bastardized version of "true" Armenian. Your evidence of this is the pronunciation of letters (which seems inconsequential, and moreover, an evolution that has occurred in both dialects) and the use of Turkish words in Armenian (which again, seems like a natural effect and is in fact found in all dialects of Armenian--you can't find a "pure" form that doesn't borrow from its neighbor languages...most if not all languages do this, be it Greek, English, etc.) What is NOT clear is, quite frankly, what your point is? Simply put, what do you want us to do about it? Stop speaking Western Armenian? (that's ridiculous!) Nominate Easter Armenian as the supreme dialect (that's ridiculous and useless!)

Again, my mom is a WA speaker and my dad is an EA speaker. Because my mom's family lives mostly in Greece, we speak to them in Greek and I grew up mostly with my dad's family, SO I speak EA most naturally. Even still, I am not biased against WA. I love it the same way I love EA. In fact, I find it to be more beautiful than EA, but that, I'd admit, is just my (well, lots of people's) opinion....

Also, if you'd really like me to point out your faulty English, I will. Again, I'm not trying to be mean, but it seems that you might benefit from writing instruction or something. I'd venture to say that your teachers (at some point) failed you in this regard.

"Has someone or someones assigned you as champions and protectors of that so called WA?"

Okay, this sentence is horrendous. "Someones" is not a word. What do you mean by "that" so-called WA? The problem is that it's unclear why you are calling it "so-called." If you have a reason why it shouldn't be called WA, you should spell it out. Here's an example/model:

"Has someone appointed you as the champions or protectors of so-called WA. I say "so-called" because . . . "

"That that so called WA, please allow me to once again call it turkahayeren become the official language of Yerevan?"

Okay, so many things are wrong here. Why would you start a sentence with "that that." I get what you mean, but this is just not clear and it sounds awful. You shouldn't say things like "please allow me to...", because you aren't really asking permission and it sounds like you are trying to be witty and failing. There's nothing worse than wit gone bad. Also, Yerevan does not have an official language; Armenia does. If you want to use the phrase you are trying for, you should say "in Yerevan." It seems minor, but they are these things that show mastery of the language (or in your case, a lack thereof). Here's some help.

"Is your hope that WA (which as I have said, I consider to be turkahayeren) serve as the official language of Armenia? If so, please explain why. I don't think that would be a good idea because ...."

See what we've done here? We've made your point clearer and then we followed it up with a blank space for you to actually give reasons. Slinging insults isn't the same as giving reasons.

I know this sounds mean, but you really do need the help. Also, I'm interested in what you have to say, but unless you are reasonably clear and articulate, I (like any reader) don't really have the patience to try to figure it out on my own from fragmented thoughts and jumbled sentences.

Go back up and read some of the absurd logic advanced by our defenders of WA and note the toxic venom spewed.

Who killed whom? Who said that WA is illegitimate? Why such aggression? Who is advocating that WA be abolished? Why are our defenders of WA so hostile? Is it because of an inferiority complex? Why feel inferior? Have not our EA speaker brothers and sisters expressed their unabashed and high admiration towards the likes of Varuzhan and Siamanto? Then, why all these insults towards the language of Terian, Charents, Isahakian, Toumanian and Sevak?

When Gor Gor wrote about "orthography" I couldn't agree more. Go back and read it. Simply because the roots of our language are hidden in the classical orthography, just because that idiot Abeghian does not know that what turns to Ի in declension is not Ե but Է just like գէտ spelled with Է becomes գիտնալ , whereas գետ means river as in the Greek "cet" as in cetacious, whales/գէտ ձուկ կետ ձուկ. But when it came to EA and WA Gor Gor lost all his composure and credibility when he mixed orthography with idiom, not any different from that idiot Sargsian who also lost us when he mixed ortgography, idiom and composition .

Look here; http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=15193

Where did the Ի in SargIsian, WTF he may be, go just like the "ou" in Khachatourian/Khachatrian?

If you did not get the sarcasm in "someoneS", then your English slang is in need of some polishing. I bet you didn't know that the plural of "you" is "youz" :P If you didn't get the joke that the plural of "who" is "who-S" :o :D just like in the Armenian

And as to "so called WA" , I use the term to distinguish between real WA and what our warriors are protecting, namely polsahayeren/turkahayeren which has no relevance to WA.

Guys, when you're confronted with an imbecile (e.g. like Arpa) why do you get mad? Why do you answer him? (such words like "turkahayeren" are clearly meant to make you angry and respond with an insult... he is simply attracting what he wants to hear, and then he'll call you uncivilized for saying it later. It's a classic technique. It's for kicks!)

In such situations (when an imbecile is in an argument making emotional insults), I always remember and follow this Yiddish proverb:

"Don't approach a goat from the front, a horse from the back, or a fool from any side."

Just walk away.

The evidence is documented in linguistic textbooks in Armenian and also in Wikipedia. There's no point in arguing over nothing. He can shout and scream and insult as much as he wants. The facts will stay the same.

Vartahoor once again proves that he's an imbecile by calling Western Armenian "Turkish Armenian".

I can do the same by calling Eastern Armenian "Russian Armenian."

So what's your point?

Eastern Armenian ("Russian Armenian") is ALSO tainted and different than Classical Armenian, just like Western Armenian ("Turkish Armenian").

Big deal! We already knew that!

Respect, so that in turn you are respected. Do you like it when people refer to Eastern Armenian as "Russian Armenian"? I think not. That's why we've stopped calling Eastern Armenian "Russian Armenian."

The evidence is documented in linguistic textbooks in Armenian and also in Wikipedia. There's no point in arguing over nothing. He can shout and scream and insult as much as he wants. The facts will stay the same.

Did you just learn that word "imbecile"?

Yeah, yeah wikipedia- mickey media.

Is that where it is stated that Turks have lived in Asia Minor for 6,000 years and that they built all those Christian monuments and churches, that Armenians don't exist, never did?

LOL! Vartahoor, your ignorance is too much!

Have you heard of the International Phonetic Alphabet? The IPA technology can categorize ANY sound in ANY human language.

We have already established that BOTH Western Armenian phonology AND Eastern Armenian phonology DEVIATE from Classical Armenian phonology. I have already presented my evidence in my earlier posts, and it is meaningless for me to post these again. It is the READER that must be discerning. And if you are not accepting of new knowledge and hold that only you speak the "RIGHT" Armenian because that's what your parents taught you, then I'm sorry to let you know that with this approach you'll be VERY disappointed to find out that the Eastern Armenian that you think is authentic is indeed evolved from Classical Armenian in a similar way that Western Armenian has evolved.

My training in the IPA and the phonologies of Eastern Armenian, Classical Armenian, and Western Armenian are more than enough to hold my own in this conversation, and I have already cited ACADEMIC TEXT which you have yet to do.

Actually, Eastern (spoken/written) is the same as written Western. I am not sure if that's what you meant.

I go = Yes gnoom em [present tense]

I am going = Yes gnoom em [present continuous]

It's the same problem...we need a "gor"! I love "gor," Gor Gor.

If you are thinking of "yes k'gnam," that is more closely like "I will go" or "that I will go," as in "yete du gnas, yes el k'gnam", but even for that people will say "yete du es gnum, yes el em gnum," and I am not sure if one is "more correct" than the other...I think the meaning is slightly different...

Side note: Oh, also, in present Armenia there are villages that speak Armenian in a way more similar to Western Armenian! I can't remember the name of the villages (we went when I was little). They speak essentially Western...

Exactly. "-gor" in Western Armenian really takes the place of "-ing" in English. There's no other way to have present continuous... (There's always a reason for something...)

Let's add that to the western armenian grammar texts, since I yet have to see that in any textbook.

Did you acquire that piece of knowledge while studying the IPA, or that was a separate course?

No. That's my original research, actually. Western Armenian textbooks discourage its use. But I claim that "-gor" actually has use, and that's why it exists.

You seem to disagree. Can you tell us how to say "I am walking" (present continuous) in Western Armenian? in Eastern Armenian?

Mr. self acclaimed grammarian and linguist, you should know by now that western armenian grammar is defective and there is no difference between the simple present tense and present continuous tense. There is also no «կրաւորական» in western armenian.
