Dave
Be ready for the Armenian tsunami Tuesday, January 04 2005 @ 07:17 AM Central Standard Time By Mehmet Ali Birand I am writing this article for those who have no idea what we will face during the year. It aims to prepare for the things to come. A huge tsunami is approaching our shores. I can almost hear it. The sky is getting darker and the water on the shore is retreating. The tsunami I am talking about comes as a result of the earthquake among the Armenian Diaspora and will soon be upon us. If the necessary precautions are not taken in a timely manner, we might face a huge calamity. We might never recover. The reason why this tsunami formed is that on April 24, 2005 is the 90th anniversary of the symbolic date of the Armenian genocide allegations. Armenians want to utilize this chance fully. For years, due to Turkish indifference, they succeeded in making the world accept the genocide allegations as a fact. No matter how much we deny them, Armenian efforts have persuaded the international public. If you go anywhere, especially in the western world, you will see 90 percent of the people you talk to believe Armenians had been the victims of genocide at the hands of Turks. That is why Armenians do not want to waste this opportunity. They want a final assault and finish the matter. (HH) What is the ‘final assault?' It is to get their genocide allegations accepted by a broader community and persuade those countries, whose parliaments have yet to ratify the claims. They want to up the tempo on the eve of the centennial, which will come at a time when Turkey will be approaching full European Union membership, as part of their “Forcing Turkey to accept the genocide” campaign. I do not know how many officials know about this matter. What is certain is that Turkey, through its indifference, will eventually have to face the sad truth. [HH] What is the nature of the tsunami? The Armenian Diaspora is preparing a huge campaign for the 90th anniversary of the 1915 incidents. There will be conferences, meetings, colloquiums and many other activities planned for the anniversary. Most importantly, they will concentrate on countries whose parliaments have yet to officially accept that the genocide had taken place and will be asked to ratify it on the 90th anniversary. The ongoing battle in the U.S. Congress will be revived. They believe if the Congress ratifies it, Turkey's hands will be tied. The same pressure will be applied to EU member countries and national parliaments will be asked to demand from the EU Council to make genocide recognition as a precondition. They will also try to make the U.N. Security Council pass a similar decision. [HH] What can we do? The only way we can save ourselves from being the victim of this attack after years of ignoring the threat is for Turkey to reassess its official policies and take the initiative. Saying, “We never committed genocide” is no longer enough. We will be forced to pay the price of inactivity. We need to do something. One is to call for the establishment of a U.N. Genocide Allegations Investigation Commission just like Yal?m Eralp and others suggest. Turkey is in the right. No one can talk of genocide. However, it has failed miserably to put its view across. The only way out is for the matter to be investigated by internationally acknowledged academics and researchers. This is the only way to find the truth. If these studies are initiated, we will gain time. In addition, while this process continues, Turkey can broaden its economic relations with Armenia and open the border gate. Such initiatives, with the international community, in mind, can be taken. Our biggest mistake would be to do nothing and continue to talk to ourselves. http://www.turks.us/article.php?story=20050104071759633 Did this man say that the genocide is a ''sad truth'' that Turkey has to face this year? Why is he claiming that Turkey is still on defensive? Turkey has threatened countries and has put a lot of money to Turkish (and Jewish) lobbies... If this is ''defensive'' I don't know what ''offensive'' is. EDIT: I modified the link, in order not to increase that sites traffic & search rankings. You may still copy and paste the URL into your browser if you wish to visit the site. Thx. Edited January 4, 2005 by vava

DominO123
This is an example of how Turkish society mass psychosis is psychopathic. Using a tragedy(the Tsunamis that made over a hundred thousand of victims) as a tool to deny another one. No words come to my mind to discribe this disgusting sick behavour. MSHAK
Look how much Turks are afraid from this coming year. Indeed their fears are justified. We will do everything this year to get the Armenian Genocide recognized and we will turn to the next step- the liberation of Western Armenia, our holy motherland which was stolen from us by Mongoloid Turks. :victory: nothing can defeat the Armenian spirit. Lets be united as we have never been before. Lets finish, what started on Arpil 24, 1915, the time of justice has come.... Boghos
Why do we bother with this mentally retarded so-called intellectuals? Are these people illiterate? Most certainly not. What kind of a country has intellectuals that instead of fighting for the truth, for repentance and acceptance of a most obvious historical truth behave instead as repeat assassins. What kind of sick bastards are these people? Turkish collective mentality has not evolved a single milimeter, they still behave like the crude, barbaric and sadistic so-called warriors of centuries ago. They still chop off the heads of their "enemies" and take pictures with them. To a certain extent intellectuals reflect the society they belong to. In this particular case they should be compared to a certain type of decomposing matter. Edited January 4, 2005 by Boghos

That's a new low even for those : intellectuals." It takes really a REAL psychopath disconnected from the rest of the world to do that. It tajes an INSANE bastard. I don't hope anyone being in the situation of the victims of the Tsunamis... but after reading this trash, I hope for his family to have the same fate, and ask him then to write the same article. Even from such "intellectuals" I wasn't expecting to sink that low, even lower for the trash newspaper that published it, without seing anything wrong doing it. Armen
So, Turkey is gonna face 90th anniversary just months after its success in EU negotiations and during 100th anniversary it's gonna be deep into EU negotiations (they gave Turkey 15 years as I remember). Turkey cannot possibly do a policy review towards its accession to EU by 2015.
gellamelan
who is this guy that wrote that? did you get it from some random forum or is he a political figure? Although desirable, I highly doubt the turkish government is THAT concerned about us. tsunami? lol anyway, what I'm trying to say is, obviously we're gonna live up to the expectations... this coming year's commemorative activities that is... but it's gonna take quite a while for Turkey to do anything about it (if they do anything at all). again... I'm not killing it for Armenians... just being a realist.

The Turkish government IS concerned about us, they even founded two Institutes just about us, and a supposed museum... and this exclude all the other institutes and organisations all over Turkey that in some form or another get subventioned. Turkish organisations outside of Turkey works in reverse of how our organisations works... while Disporans help Armenia monterly, in the cases of the abroad Turkish organisations, they recieve founds from Turkey. ATAA for instance which is the largest organisation in America was undangered not so long ago, because Turkey has cut the juice a little. We Armenians are treated like celebrities... you'll find about us from the Turkish ministry of foreign affait web-sites, the material about us in such sites even beat any other current events "foreign affairs." They have even published couple of dousens of booklets, books, works, quarterlies, magazines etc... just about us... we have even dedicated places in their newspapers. Do you know that the founds that the Turkish embassies recieve from Turkey, contain portions just for us Armenians? I am excluding here all the educational system. They even mention us in their new penal code.

Can you please define your criteria of success and, later, assess it based on the LONG list of risks (of failure!) When assessing Armenia's achievements you seem to opt for the "half empty" glass perspective. When assessing TEMPORARILY SO CALLED Turkey's achievements you prefer the 20% FULL perspective! Double standards! who is this guy that wrote that? did you get it from some random forum or is he a political figure? Arpa
First off. Considering that tsunami is from the Japanese meaning tsu=harbor and nami=wave, is there an Armenian word for it? Let me suggest one. Harbor=navahangist, wave=aliq ... navaliq?? Who says Turks are stupid? In some ways may be, but in this case the guy hit it right on the head. An Armenian saying that the Turks also know; "The fly may be small but it causes a huge upset". Be it a stomach upset and nausea or catastrophic diseases and epidemics. He could not have found a better simile than the tsunami. We have known the word for quite some time but we never imagined the destruction it can cause. An undersea tremor of huge magnitude that did not even cause a palpable continenetal tremor, yet its side effect proved to be more destructive than any earthquake we have known. Armenia is small. As far as the world is concerned it may as well be hidden at the bottom of the ocean. At the present it cannot create any destructive eathquakes, so to speak, but just like that undersea tremor it can and is creating shock waves felt around the world. Turks and Turkey can do one or the other. They can either build dikes and walls to stem the waves or get out of the way. At the present they are opting for the former, but whther they realize or not the material they are using to build those walls are defective, based on lies and artificial material. It will not stand the test. They know it. That is why they have been talking about the subject more than ever before. Whether the talk is denial and more denial at least it is being discussed unlike the past when they would not even respond. That tsunami, the navaliq has created at least one hazard for them. It has created a quicksand for them. The more they try, the more they thrash about the deeper they will/are sinking. That tsunami has not yet hit land but it will get there. The shockwaves have hit many shores and left an idelible effect, it will reach the shores of Anatolia sooner than later. If the Turks had any sense they would abandon building defective walls, face reality or get out of the way.
Nakharar
ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ISSUE THREATENS TO COMPLICATE TURKEY'S ENTRY TALKS WITH EUROPEAN UNION YEREVAN, JANUARY 13. ARMINFO. The Armenian Genocide issue threatens to complicate Turkey's entry talks with the European Union, says President of Turkish History Institute Yusuf Halacoglu. Halacoglu, who endorses the mainstream Turkish view of the events and rejects the genocide claims, says that setting scholars to work together is all the more important for his country, He says that the commission would ideally work under the auspices of the United Nations or another international body to help ensure impartiality and to encourage all states concerned to open up their archives to the panel. Halacoglu met with Turkish Minister Abdullah Gul Wednesday and said he hoped for official Turkish backing for the commission.
