Students recognized for work Four from Glendale high schools went above and beyond in helping others. By ALECIA FOSTER NORTHWEST GLENDALE -- When Meline Martirosian heard about a holiday toy drive for needy elementary school students, she immediately jumped at the chance to help. "I remembered my struggle," she said. Martirosian and her family had a hard time making ends meet -- let alone having extra money to buy toys or other extras -- when they first moved to Glendale from Armenia about six years ago. Wanting to help, the Glendale High School senior donated 50 toys -- bought with her own money and that collected from co-workers. Her act of selflessness caught the attention of school leaders and the Glendale Host Lions Club, which at a luncheon Wednesday recognized Martirosian and three other high school seniors for being outstanding students. Hoover High senior Nancy Trinidad was recognized for her work in several campus organizations and her initiative in getting things done. Last year, she helped organize a peace march after Hoover student Raul Aguirre was stabbed to death in front of the school. She also organized a dance to raise money for a terminally ill student. "Nancy didn't just talk about it she did it," said Heidi Applebaum, an assistant principal at the school. Crescenta Valley High student Brian Landisi also has been active in school activities -- from student government to the school paper. He recently put together a video for the funeral of former CV student Roberta Happe, who was murdered several weeks ago. Beside doing well in school, Clark Magnet student Lois Song has been an active volunteer and member of her church -- singing in the choir and helping with other programs there. "I like to work with kids so I volunteer at a lot of schools," she said. While the day was devoted to students, the Lions Club surprised Glendale High Assistant Principal Leroy Sherman. He received the Good Guy Award from Lions member Dick Holway for all the work he has done with the students, including the holiday toy drive.

Lessons from a tragic past Glendale-based groups hope handbook will make Armenian Genocide part of high school curriculum for all students. By CLAUDIA PESCHIUTTA http://www.latimes.com/communities/news/bu...tgn0013085.html GLENDALE -- Mehmet Talaat *****, Ismail Enver *****, Kharpert, Der el-Zor. These names and places would inspire little more than curiosity in many people. For others, they are are as integral a part of heritage as the names and birthplaces of ancestors. In an effort to ensure the Armenian Genocide is not forgotten, two Glendale-based groups have worked together to produce a book on the issue for high-school teachers and students. The 118-page book, titled "The Armenian Genocide 1915-1923," includes everything from portraits of central figures to newspaper and eyewitness accounts of atrocities in places such as Kharpert and Der el-Zor. An estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed after being exiled by the Ottoman Turks in 1915. The Western Region of the Armenian National Committee and the Armenian Cultural Foundation hope to get the book into classrooms in Glendale and other cities. Jim Brown, superintendent of the Glendale Unified School District, said he wants to get copies of the book for local teachers and campus libraries. "It's a timely and important work for us to have access to in the school district," he said. "This is going to be a valuable resource to us." Not all history textbooks include information on the genocide, said Alex Sardar, executive director of the Armenian National Committee's local chapter. "Excluding a historical truth creates a vacuum of ignorance on the issues," he said. "We hope that by educating world citizens at a very young age we are able to stop such violence and crimes against humanity from occurring in the future." The Turkish government denies allegations of a genocide and the U.S. does not officially recognize it. Most of the first 2,000 copies printed of the book, written by Simon Payaslian, have been given out or sold, Sardar said. Money raised by selling the books, which are $20 each, will be used to print more copies, he said. Many copies have been given to local education officials, including Glendale Board of Education members. There is "big interest" in getting the book into local schools, said board member Pam Ellis. The large population of Armenian students in the area and the inclusion of the genocide in state-mandated curriculum are reasons to teach the subject in Glendale classrooms, she said. "The harder it is to find the material, the less likely the teacher is to teach it," Ellis said. "This book just makes the material readily accessible." Sardar sees a connection between the genocide and more recent atrocities, such as school shootings. "There are some underlying issues that are dealt with in this book that are relevant to today's stuff ... issues of tolerance, issues of respect for human life," he said.

WORLD CUP 2010 FIFA might have agreed on rotation in principal, but, contrary to widely circulated reports, it has not yet agreed that Africa will be the first continent in the rotation. Michel Zen-Ruffinen, FIFA's general secretary, said rotation has "a lot of potential problems" that have yet to be worked out. "We have to be sure there'll be a real choice," he said. "Some confederations have more members capable of hosting the World Cup than others, and we have to be sure the pool of potential bidders is as wide as possible." Meanwhile, former South African national team coach Clive Barker said South Africa, Morocco, Egypt and Nigeria are capable of staging the World Cup. "I think FIFA has looked at Africa and decided that they can take the risk in 2010 and then they won't have to bring it back to the continent for another 20 years," he said. "They'll have breathing space." Complicating matters for FIFA is the fact that by 2010 it will have been 32 years since a South American country last staged soccer's showcase event. Which makes Brazil a good bet for 2014, the year the U.S. wanted the World Cup back. * * * World Cup Qualifiers SATURDAY'S RESULTS * Andorra 0, Netherlands 5 * Armenia 2, Wales 2 * Azerbaijan 0, Moldova 0 * Bosnia 1, Austria 1 * Bulgaria 2, Iceland 1 * Croatia 4, Latvia 1 * Cyprus 0, Ireland 4 * England 2, Finland 1 * Germany 2, Albania 1 * Hungary 1, Lithuania 1 * Malta 0, Denmark 5 * Northern Ireland 0, Czech Republic 1 * Norway 2, Poland 3 * Russia 1, Slovenia 1 * Scotland 2, Belgium 2 * Sweden 1, Macedonia 0 * Luxembourg 0, Faroe Islands 2 * Yugoslavia 1, Switzerland 1 * Turkey 1, Slovakia 1 * Spain 5, Liechtenstein 0 * Romania 0, Italy 2 * Ukraine 0, Belarus 0 Note: Home team listed first

THE MEETING BETWEEN POPE JOHN PAUL AND PATRIARCH ALEKSEI COULD BE HELD IN ARMENIA 26.03.2001 YEREVAN, March 26. /Mediamax/. Vatican officials suggest that the most likely occasion for a meeting between the heads of the Rome Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church could be in Armenia. In the off the record interview to the Catholic World News agency they noted that Armenia is regarded as "neutral territory." They also say that the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Catholicos Karekin II, enjoys good relations with both the Vatican and the Moscow Patriarchate, so that he might serve as an ideal intermediary in setting up the meeting. Moscow's Catholic Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz and Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Kirill have announced on March 23 that the meeting between Pope John Paul II and Patriarch Aleksei II of Moscow "should be truly historic, and not merely a protocol meeting." It is supposed that John Paul II will visit Armenia in autumn 2001 and will take part in the celebrations dedicated to the 1700th anniversary of adoption of Christianity in Armenia. --0--

LEADER OF "21ST CENTURY" PARTY COMPARES ARMENIAN PRESIDENT WITH SLOBODAN MILOSEVIC 27.03.2001 YEREVAN, March 27. /Mediamax/. Leader of "21st century" party David Shahnazarian compared at today's press conference in Yerevan Armenian President Robert Kocharian with Slobodan Milosevic, "due to the policy of whom Yugoslavia lost large territories". "If our society continues to tolerate this dictatorship, we'll repeat Yugoslavia's example", Shahnazarian said. According to him, today Artsax conflict is taken as a territorial argument between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and not as a problem of nations' self-determination. Shahnazarian noted that neither Armenian authorities, nor the OSCE co-chairmen and the international community deny this. Such perception of the problem provides favorable conditions for Azerbaijan at the negotiations, Shahnazarian said. Leader of "21st century" party stated that Azerbaijan's position remained unchanged throughout the meetings of R.Kocharian and H.Aliyev, while Armenia, appearing in foreign policy deadlock, has repeatedly changed its positions in the Artsax conflict settlement, Shahnazarian asserts. "It's obvious, that signing the "Istanbul" declaration at the OSCE summit in 1999, Armenia agreed that Nagorno Artsax Republic is a part of Azerbaijan", D. Shahnazarian said. --0--
