MEETING OF ARMENIAN PRESIDENT AND NATO SECRETARY GENERAL TO TAKE PLACE JUNE 6 IN BRUSSELS 01.06.2001 YEREVAN, June 1. /Mediamax/. Armenian President Robert Kocharian and NATO Secretary General George Robertson will meet in Brussels on June 6th. Mediamax learned today about this from informed diplomatic sources. The visit of the Armenian President to the headquarters of the European Union (EU) will begin Thursday, during which Kocharian will meet with leadership of EU, European Commission and Europarliament. NATO Secretary General George Robertson visited Armenia and Azerbaijan this January. --0--

HOVANESIAN IS DISPLEASED WITH THE LEVEL OF ARMENIAN-GEORGIAN INTER-PARLIAMENTARY TIES 01.06.2001 YEREVAN, June 1. /Mediamax/. Chairman of the parliamentary commission for foreign affairs, Hovanes Hovanesian said in the interview to Mediamax that the level of Armenian-Georgian inter-parliamentary relations was "not pleasing". According to him, parliamentarians of both countries more often meet within the framework of international forums, rather than on two-sided basis. These contacts should be intensified, Hovanesian stressed. Hovanesian told Mediamax on May 14th that the visit of the head of the Georgian parliament Zurab Zhvania to Yerevan, planned this June, is postponed for indefinite time. According to him, it is due to the institutional changes in Georgia, as a result of which Zhvania may be offered the post of the prime minister of the country. --0--

ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT IS OPEN FOR CONTACTS WITH RUSSIAN, GEORGIAN AND AZERBAIJANI COLLEAGUES 01.06.2001 YEREVAN, June 1. /Mediamax/. Chairman of the commission for foreign affairs of the National Assembly of Armenia, Hovanes Hovanesian said today in the interview to Mediamax that the Armenian parliament is open to discussion of regional issues with colleagues from Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. Hovanesian said this commenting at the request of Mediamax on the statement of the leaders of "Caucasian 4", approved Thursday in Minsk, which stated of the support of the presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia to the proposal to hold meetings of representatives of the legislative branch of the four countries. ARMENIA AND WB SIGNED AGREEMENT ON SAC-4 CREDIT AMOUNTING $50 MILLION 01.06.2001 YEREVAN, June 1. /Mediamax/. Armenia and the World Bank signed Thursday an agreement on "Structural Reforms Credit Program (SAC-4)", Mediamax was informed today by the press service of Armenian Foreign Ministry. According to the signed agreement, the credit resources allocated to Armenia will total $50 million. Greek Telecommunications Group (OTE) announced that its net profits in Armenia fell by 44.7% in first quarter of 2001. OTE owns 90 per cent of shares of ArmenTel Company - the monopolist in the telecommunications sphere of Armenia. The OTE reported the net income of ArmenTel has made 2.1 million Euros in Armenia in the first quarter of 2001.

Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev says that Russia may play a more active and decisive role in Artsax settlement. TURKEY MUST ALTER ITS POSITION TOWARDS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE, INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE SAYS 01.06.2001 YEREVAN, June 1. /Mediamax/. "For years Turkish authorities have conducted a campaign challenging the genocide. Their chief weapon has been widespread ignorance of events." Philip Marsden writes this in an article, "Turks and Armenians Need Truth" published today in the International Herald Tribune. The author reminds that when the French National Assembly passed a resolution in January recognizing the genocide, Ankara withdrew its ambassador from Paris, French contracts in Turkey worth millions of dollars were canceled. "Until recently, Turkish arguments were enough to muddy an unfamiliar historical backwater. In the last nine months it has changed. The media response to recent developments, including the French National Assembly vote, has not only been on a new scale but has revealed a growing acceptance among independent commentators that a concerted attempt to kill the Armenians or drive them from Turkey did take place," the newspaper says. "But this has not altered the Turkish position. It is high time that this abuse of history stopped. The Turkish state is doing its citizens no favors by continuing its knee-jerk reactions to the genocide," Philip Marsden says. "This year, with its 1,700th anniversary of Armenia's adoption of Christianity (making it the world's first Christian country), is a time to honor the Armenians.
