  10. THE LEADERS OF ARMENIA HAVE OBJECTION TO THE JOINING OF THE COUNTRY TO THE RUSSIA-BYELORUSSIA UNION 11.06.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/. The leaders of the RA have negative attitute toward joining Armenia to the Russia-Byelorussia Union. President Robert Kocharian told reporters about it after his arrival from Brussels to Yerevan, commenting the declaration of the President of the Russian State Duma Genady Seleznyov to disscus that question with the Armenian leaders. The President said that he is ready to do everything possible not to permit the disscusion of that question. Robert Kocharyan added to it that he had no right to hamper the disscusion of joining Armenia to the Russia-Byelorussia Union, if it was raised within the frames of law and the constitutional norms.

At a joint press conference the heads of the Parliaments of both countries evaluated the results of the visit as "very productive". Genady Seleznev told about his talks with the President. In particular, the Speaker of State Duma and Robert Kocharian discussed military-political issues, prospects of providing ferry communication via "Kavkaz" port, and also the opportunity of joining Armenia to "Russia-Belarus" union. Speaking about developing Armenian-Russian military partnership Seleznev said, "Our frontier troops are located in Armenia. This means that any encroachment on its the sovereignty will be considered as directed against Russia".

"Mediamax" informs that Anatolian agency has spread information about a meeting of the representatives of the leadership of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and ASALA (Privy Army for Liberation of Armenia). According to the information of the agency, ASALA was presented at the meeting by its "leader Simon Zakarian and the director of the political wing Vazgen Petrosian". According to the report of the source, Zakarian claimed to the leaders of the PKK that "after the decision to stop military operations against Turkey Kurds should not rely on the support of Armenia".

Today, at a press conference Foreign Minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanian has again confirmed that Armenia is prepared to continue the negotiation process on the Artsax conflict on basis of "the Parisian principles". According to the Minister's words, serious progress has been really achieved during the talks in Paris and Key West, and this was encouraging. But after the last visit of the co-chairmen of the Minsk group to the region, evidently the mediators met new problems, understood rather as proceeding from Azerbaijan. As a result the Geneva meeting, which had been planned in the beginning of June, was delayed for an indeterminate period of time. The mediators explained the slippage of the next stage of the negotiations as caused by unavailability of the Armenian and Azerbaijanian societies to accept the proposals of the Minsk group. The Minister pointed up that neither Armenia, nor Artsax addressed a request to the co-chairmen to delay the meeting. This lets assume that the problems appeared namely in Baku. Vardan Oskanian stated that the negotiations had not been broken off. He hoped that the mediators would be able to bring the negotiations back to the process initiated in Paris.
