IRAN, RUSSIA TO JOIN EFFORTS TO STRUGGLE TERRORISM MOSCOW, JUNE 28, ARMENPRESS: Iran and Russia will closely cooperate in the regulation of regional conflicts, Russian deputy foreign minister Vyacheslav Trubnikobv and Iran's ambassador in Moscow Mehdi Safari said on Thursday. According to Russia's foreign ministry, the two sides stressed their strive to fight against international terrorism, extremism and drugs trafficking. RUSSIAN LAW CAUSES CONCERNS IN AZERBAIJAN BAKU, JULY 2, ARMENPRESS: One of the latest laws, passed by the Russian State Duma (parliament) which opens doors for new Federation members has caused serious concerns in Azerbaijan, a Baku-based 525 Gazette reports. The law stipulates that a foreign country or part of it may join the Russian Federation even if it has no common borders with Russia. The daily quotes former advisor to Azerbaijani president on foreign issues Vafa Guluzade as saying that the law is "an alarming event." In an interview to Azerbaijani Turan news agency, Guluzade described the law as " continuation of Russia's imperial policy." Another Baku-based daily Yeni Musavat quotes the former advisor as saying that the law is directed, in the first place, against Georgia, as "Russia makes Georgia understand that it may raise the issue of joining Abkhazia, South Osetia and even Ajaria to Russian Federation." Guluzade also says that the strategic point of the law is to implant instability in Georgia and "to prevent implementation of Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline and TRACECA projects and diminish the West's influence in the Caucasus." Guluzade says that the law may also threaten Azerbaijan, "as Moscow may also raise the issue of joining Karabagh with Russia."

BAKU CONCERNED WITH TURKMENISTAN'S DRIVE TO MODERNIZE ITS ARMED FORCES BAKU, JULY 4, ARMENPRESS: The official Baku is seriously concerned over the process of modernization and upgrading in Turkmenistan's armed forces. President Saparmurad Niyazonv recently sacked the deputy defense minister who was responsible for armed forces modernization for his failures. Turkmenistan has also bought recently 18 SU-25 fighters from Georgia as compensation of part of Georgia's debt to Turkmenistan. Another 6 fighters will soon arrive from Tbilisi to Ashgabad. According to a senior official of TbilAviaoStroy company, thus Georgia has paid $46 million of its total $336 million debt to Turkmenistan. A Baku-based Echo daily writes that Turkmenistan's armed forces wide-scale modernization is taking place against the background of serious differences between Baku and Turkmenistan over oil reserves in the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijani experts believe that Turkmenistan's drive is directed against Azerbaijan, but they rule out wide-scale military actions, saying Turkmenistan may incite various provocations in the Caspian Sea. A senior Azeri diplomat, who asked not to disclose his name, told the daily that these actions are being carried out at the orders of a third side. "It is not excluded that it is Iran," he said.

ARMEN GHAZARIAN WINS WORLD CHAMPION TITLE YEREVAN, JULY 4, ARMENPRESS Armen Ghazarian, an Armenian weight-lifter in 62 kg weight category, won the world championship for juniors in Salonik (Greece). Another Armenian sportsman of the same weight category Arthur Danielian became the winner of a bronze medal, while Makar Tamrazian from Gyumri won a silver medal. Armenian sportsmen haven't had such bright results for a long time. There are 8 Armenian weight-lifters competing in Salonik and this is not the final result. RISE IN THE NUMBER OF ASTHMA PATIENTS REPORTED YEREVAN, JULY 6, ARMENPRESS: A ten percent rise was reported last year in the number of patients suffering from bronchial asthma. According to the Armenian health ministry, the total number of people in Armenia suffering from this disease now stands at some 7,000, but the experts say their real number is bigger. Two thousand patients alone are being supervised by Asthma Medical Center. Though the disease is curable but lethal cases were also reported. A seminar convened in Yerevan July 4 was trying to put together the doctors' efforts in early detection of asthma cases. The specialist say that treatment of asthma patients in the Yerevan Salt Mines, located some hundred meters under the ground is very efficient. Now it has patients from Russia, Georgia and even from USA who spend part of the day under the ground breathing the air saturated with salt steam.

UN WFP EXAMINES DROUGHT AFTEREFFECTS IN SYUNIK KAPAN, JULY 6, ARMENPRESS: A team of experts from the UN World Food Program (WFP) Armenia office, led by office head Erica Jorgensen, have arrived in the Armenian province of Syunik to examine the damages caused to the province agriculture by a recent drought. Russian Pullout From Base Under Question TBILISI (RFE/RL)--There was no indication that Russia would meet its July 2nd midnight deadline to vacate the Gudauta military base in Georgia's breakaway province of Abkhazia. Georgian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kakha Sikharulidze said Russia asked permission to leave a 300-strong force at Gudauta. He said this request would be examined only after all Russian weapons are pulled out. Georgia fears that these weapons could fall into the hands of the Abkhaz leadership, which opposes the Russian withdrawal. Moscow-backed Abkhaz separatists fought against Georgian troops in 1992-1993, repelling them beyond the Inguri River that separates their province from the rest of the country. Georgia currently exerts no control over Abkhazia. Russia completed the handover to the Georgian government of the Vaziani airbase near Tbilisi. A pullout date remains to be negotiated for two remaining bases at Batumi and Akhalkalaki.

Ex-Soviet Breakaway Regions Discuss Cooperation In Artsax YEREVAN (RFE/RL)--The Nagorno-Artsax authorities hosted a meeting on July 2-3 of senior officials from four unrecognized republics of the former Soviet Union which seek to promote their multilateral ties to offset the lack of full international recognition. The foreign ministers of Artsax, the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and the Transdniester Republic which is seeking independence from Moldova began a two-day session in Stepanakert, focusing on internationally sponsored peace efforts in their areas. The parties were briefing each other on recent developments in their respective conflicts with Azerbaijan, Georgia and Moldova, Artsax officials said. The four entities, which fought successful secessionist wars in the 1990s, are due to issue a joint communiqué on July 3, pledging greater cooperation in the international arena. The president of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Artsax Republic, Arkady Ghoukasian, described the meeting as "important." But speaking to RFE/RL, he stressed that the long-running conflicts in the four former Soviet republics have major historical and political differences and therefore require different solutions. Also on the agenda of the talks is the creation of a joint "information center" meant to facilitate the exchange of information among the entities. The officials also discussed the possibility of establishing direct commercial links. The four breakaway territories, which have enjoyed de-facto independence for the past decade, reject offers of conventional autonomy repeatedly made by the authorities in Baku, Tbilisi and Chisinau. They instead favor the creation of loose confederations with the former metropolies.

Armenian Church Conference Ends In Geneva GENEVA--Over 75 international theologians, university professors, and officials from other churches took part in an international conference dedicated to the Spiritual Culture of the Armenian Apostolic Church, which opened on June 26 at Bossed Center in Geneva, Switzerland. Speaking at the opening of the conference was His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia. Aram I emphasized the need to reinvigorate the Armenian Church on different levels. His Beatitude Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan, Armenian Patriarch of Istanbul and All Turkey, also spoke at the conference, stressing the need to strengthen the spiritual life of the Armenian people. Conference participants on June 29 visited the headquarters of the World Council of Churches (WCC), located in Geneva. The participants were addressed by Rev. Dr. Konrad Raiser (Germany), General Secretary, Chief Executive of the WCC. Speaking on behalf of the meeting participants was Seta Khudushian, who presented an Armenian embroidery to the World Council of Churches. The forum was organized by the Cilician Catholicosate and ran till June 30.
