  1. MOSCOW-BASED LAWYER TO FILE ANOTHER PETITION TO DEMAND RELOCATION OF CHIEF DEFENDANT YEREVAN, JULY 25, ARMENPRESS: Oleg Yunishev, a Moscow-based lawyer who represents the interests of the Vazgen Sarkisian family, (former Armenian prime minister killed in 1999 parliament killings,) said today he was going to file another, a more reasoned and substantiated petition, to request the court, hearing the October 27 case, to relocate the ringleader Nairi Hunanian from ex-KGB prison to a jail run by the interior ministry. Yunishev and a senior member of the Hanrapetutiun (Republic) party Souren Soureniants called a news conference today to give details of their position over the court's decision to reject the first petition. The previous petition had been filed by Oleg Yunishev, who argued that suspicions about Hunanian having cooperated with national security ministry in the past were enough to move him to another prison. Speaking today to reporters Yunishev said they had requested the court to relocate Hunanian so that to eliminate all these suspicions, as "many facts in the files say that various methods of influence were applied to Hunanian in the national security prison."

  7. This splendid debut is quite a revelation and easily one of the best albums to come out of Armenia this year. Edgar Gyanjumyan, emerging to Armenia's music scene at very young age, has already established himself as a mature composer. His songs are in repertoire of many Armenian pop stars. Next to previously released hits Hayastan (Shushan Petrosyan), Yerevan (Suzan Markaryan, Sirusho), Dzon Sparapetin (Shushan Petrosyan), the album also includes another hit - Ereko (Alla Levonyan, Edgar Gyanjumyan - duet). Created in collaboration with Alla Levonyan (lyrics), Ereko has both: tenderness of Armenian traditional melody line, and contemporary groove. Not to be missed!

  20. British Embassy Argues Use of the Word Genocide YEREVAN (Armenpress)—The British Embassy in Armenia issued an announcement Friday asserting that Ambassador Timothy Jones never used the word "Genocide," when discussing the events of 1915 to 1923 as reported by Armenpress on July 18. Armenpress stressed that the mistake wasn't made by the news agency, but rather by the British Embassy, adding that the agency is in possession of an audio tape, in which the Ambassador can clearly be heard using the word "Genocide." "Our country views what happened to the Armenians between 1915 and 1923 within the Ottoman Empire as a terrible period in history," stressed the announcement by the British Embassy, which added that Great Britain was also at war with the Ottoman Empire. The announcement went on to say that if information about any atrocities were being publicized, it was being done by Great Britain. The Armenpress news agency was adamant to point out that the audio tape recording of the statement clearly captured Jones using the word Genocide. "Our country recognized the Genocide against the Armenians," said the Ambassador in the Armenpress recording. The news agency announced that the tape is available for review by any entity that doubts the content of the recording.
  21. Milan Orchestra Gives Historic Concert YEREVAN (RFE/RL)—The symphonic orchestra and choir of Milan's world-famous La Scala theater marked the most memorable cultural event in Armenia's recent history on Monday when it gave a historic concert in Yerevan dedicated to the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity as a state religion. The two-hour performance, broadcast live on national television, ended with a prolonged ovation from some 7,000 spectators that packed the city's main concert hall. The concert, conducted by La Scala's Riccardo Muti, featured works on biblical themes by 19th century Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. Muti, who said he arrived in Armenia "with great emotion and joy," was given one of the country's highest state awards, St. Mesrop Mashtots's Medal, by President Robert Kocharian earlier in the day. "Riccardo Muti is one of the giant conductors of modern era," said Eduard Topchian, chief conductor of the Yerevan Philharmonic Orchestra. "It's a great happiness for Armenian spectators to such a renowned musician come to Armenia with the La Scala orchestra. It's like a fairy tale
