The government made a decision to give the refugees from Azerbaijan adopted Armenian citizenship, the right to make private the accommodations in dorms, if they have lived there not less than for 3 years. In seven dorms belonging to the bureau of the refugees affairs, 1800 families live now. According to the information of "Armenpress", the number of refuges adopting citizenship of Armenian Republic increases every day. Only in May 1200 refugees applied to adopt the citizenship.

Three teachers receive grants from center The money will help develop programs on social injustice and human rights. Thursday, June 14, 2001 By Cammi Clark Three Onondaga Central high school teachers received grants from the Central New York Teaching Center. The grants will be used todevelop programs around the theme of social injustice and human rights. Rebecca Nicandri, a business teacher, was awarded a $500 grant that is seed money to start an innovative idea, according to the center. Her program will be used to develop a "Human Rights Web Quest." The program is designed to foster collaboration between the business, social studies and English departments. The Web Quest site would provide information on human rights that can be explored and integrated into a joint social studies/English human rights project. Donna Merlau, a social studies teacher and department head, and Laura Visconti, a first-year English teacher, received a $750 grant. The money will be used to collaborate in English and 10th-grade social studies. Students will be required to explore social injustice and human rights in the context of South Africa and apartheid, Cambodia and the killing fields, China and the Tiananmen Square massacre, and Armenia and genocide. Students will read and summarize from a pre-selected list of fiction or nonfiction books, view a movie, review Web sites and conduct library research on the chosen culture and injustice/human rights violation. Visconti also was chosen to attend the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators July 8 to 10. The Washington, D.C., conference is competitive and open to middle and high school educators from across the nation with five or fewer years teaching about the Holocaust. Educators who complete the program receive a collection of educational resources and a voucher to purchase Holocaust-related resources. Museum educators and scholars will share rationales, strategies and approaches for presenting this complex topic to students in sessions designed specifically for teachers. Participants will have extensive time to view the Holocaust museum's permanent exhibition, "Remember the Children: Daniel's Story" and other special exhibitions and visit the interactive computers in the Wexner Learning Center and the Education Resource Center. Seminars will emphasize planning and implementing units of study for teaching about the Holocaust in middle and high schools. The artisans were granted the “St. Mesrob Mashdots” and “Mkhitar Khorenatsi” awards; and militaristic medical officers with the “Mkhitar Heratzi” award and other Armenian Republic and military medals. Kocharian personally issued the insignias, and thanked all the recipients for their work towards fabrication of a greater Armenia. The recipients, in their turn, gave thanks to the president for recognizing and distinguishing their hard work. Among the awarded were world-famous dudukist Jivan Kasparian; Composers Mirzoyan and Haroutounian; Singers Bella Tarpinian and Raisa Mgrdichian; and other actors and theatrical performers. Nikolay Ryzhkov Says Armenia Retained Great Scientific Potential YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)--Vice-Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly, Chairman of the Armenia-Russia Inter-parliamentary Group Gagik Aslanian held a meeting June 15 with a delegation headed by Deputy of the Russian State Duma, Chairman of the International Union of Commodity Producers (IUCP) Nikolay Ryzhkov. Participating in the meeting were leaders of parliamentary factions, groups and heads standing commissions. Summing up the results of the meetings in Armenia, Ryzhkov commented on the works of the IUCP Yerevan Conference as being effective, and formulated the next task - finding funds for the implementation of the proposed programs, in which Armenia has an essential role in as well. The sides expressed opinions that favorable conditions are available for further work. A decision was made to specify the program of discussions at a meeting in Yerevan in September, after which, according to Ryzhkov, the commission will hold joint meetings in Moscow in December. The meeting participants also pointed out that Armenia has retained great scientific and technical potential, that is not properly implemented. Mutually advantageous results are possible to attain through joint initiatives and by establishing joint ventures.

General Dro Kanayan Leadership Institute Dinner-Banquet, Fund-raiser Successful MONTEBELLO--On Saturday June 9, at the Bagramian Hall in Montebello, under the auspices of the ARF Western United States Central Committee and organized by the ARF Dro Gomideh a dinner banquet was held to benefit the establishment of the General Dro Kanayan Leadership Institute in Armenia. In the presence of approximately 300 people, about $35,000 was raised. A conspicuous $10,000 was donated by the ARS Diamond Bar “Arpi” Chapter and the “Nairi” Chapter of the ARS donated a sum of $500 raised by the donations of the pre-school and Saturday school students. General Dro’s son and grandson, Mardig and Dro Kanayan, and from Washington the military attaché of the Armenian General Consulate of the United States Colonel Haig Kotanjian. Vahik Gurjian, member of the relocation committee of General Dro’s remains was also present. Garo Madenlian, Shahan Stepanian and Ara Khanjian were representing the ARF Western United States Central Committee. It should also be noted that the local Armenians whose representatives were attending the banquet were mostly people who were brought to the United States from Germany by General Dro, and had worked with him closely. They had great memories of General Dro, and were honored to have the opportunity to meet his immediate family members. Master of Ceremonies, Serg Simonian, in his opening remarks mentioned the significance of the occasion which will preserve the eternal memory of “Dro” a fedayee,and a major national hero. He emphasized the vast popularity of General Dro in Montebello and remarked that the Armenian people knows how to respect the memory of their martyrs. Remembering the past but emphasizing on the importance of building the future, Serg Simonian weighed the significance of the construction of the new Leadership Institute which will train Armenia’s future leaders. Colonel Haig Kotanjian welcoming the public on behalf of the Defense Minister of Armenia, Serg Sargsyan, and General Arthur Agabegyan said: “Today, once more, we have the honor of remembering one of the renown martyrs of the Armenian people, General Dro, his martial breviaries in the homeland and his contributions to the Diaspora. Dro Kanayan with his internal military power and political-strategic influence from the times of the first Armenian Republic became a significant figure of the national army.” Colonel Kotanjian presented General Dro as a brave fedayee, the organizer and the revitalizer of the national army whose military personality was reveled in the critical moments of the Armenian existence. He praised the construction of the Leadership Institute which is geared towards the preservation of the national and strategic security. He talked about equilibrium of the region, the organization of the Armenian Army and the significance of its improvements, stating that our military leadership pays a close attention to the military developments around the world. Mardig Kanayan, Dro’s son and head of the project, underlined the importance of the Armenian community of Montebello, and the contributions of his friends and coworkers. He also talked about the impressive public attendance in the relocation of General Dro’s remains last May. Then he stated the strength of General Dro and his belief in creating the Armenian homeland. He mentioned the long term battle of the ARF, because of which it has been possible to sustain the Armenian Flag and our values. And finally he talked about the General Dro Leadership Institute and it’s significance. On behalf of the ARF Central Committee, Garo Madenlian in his speech announced a full support in the construction of the institute, since the ARF has expectations from the establishment. He also presented Drastamat (Dro) Kanayanor or Unger Dro as a successful person who never had failures in his military or administrative paths. Garo Madenlian said he was fortunate to meet with General Dro’s friends who had worked with him in Germany and Lebanon. During the program Lilit Ousdayan, a student of the Mesrobian Armenian School read pieces of “Mrrgatzin Dro” by Simon Vratsian, and the “Nairi” dance ensemble of the ARS performed. ) Knollenberg Urges Consideration Of Trans-Armenia Pipeline Route WASHINGTON (Noyan Tapan)--The Armenian Assembly commended US Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues Co-Chair Representative Joe Knollenberg (R-MI), along with Caucus Co-Chair Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), and Caucus members Joseph Crowley (D-NY) and John Sweeney (R-NY) today for introducing a congressional resolution that discourages the use of American taxpayers' funds for energy transportation projects in the Caucasus if they exclude consideration of trans-Armenian routes. The resolution also recommends that the Trade Development Agency fund a feasibility study to determine the cost savings of a trans-Armenia Baku-Ceyhan pipeline. According to the press release of the Armenian Assembly of America, the resolution introduced in the House of Representatives states that the US should not subsidize pipelines "whose commercial viability is in doubt or which hinders the United States' goal of integrating Armenia into a secure and prosperous regional economic framework." The resolution calls for all proposals to be evaluated and ensure the inclusion of all Caucasus countries. The current Azerbaijani government is opposed to any economic cooperation with Armenia. Instead, together with Turkey, Azerbaijan has blockaded Armenia for a decade. Azerbaijan has tried and failed to force Armenia into concessions in the Nagorno-Artsax issue by isolating the country politically and economically. Government officials have repeatedly indicated that Armenia would be excluded from a Baku-Ceyhan pipeline route. "Secretary of State Colin Powell has said that Armenia's integration into international institutions remains a foreign policy priority for the United States. The resolution ensures Armenia's participation with its neighbors in important economic and commercial projects," said Knollenberg. "I am pleased to have the opportunity to champion this effort." "Azerbaijan's Baku-Ceyhan pipeline has been a dubious proposition from Day One. Russian military base in Vasiani will be passed to the Georgian side in June 20 and military aerodrome of this base in June 25. The personnel of the base will be redistributed to the other bases of Russian Military Group in South Caucasus in Georgia and Armenia and a part of this will be redistributed to Russia. According to the agreement, achieved in 1999 at the OSCE summit in Istanbul, the Russian base must be closed till July 1 of this year.
