KIEV CONFIRMS ITS INTEREST IN IRAN-ARMENIA GAS PIPELINE 20.02.2001 YEREVAN, February 20. /Mediamax/. Ukraine is interested in participating in Iran-Armenia gas pipeline construction. As Mediamax was informed in the press service of the government, head of the Ukrainian State commission for industrial policy, co-chairman of the Armenian-Ukrainian intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation Vladimir Novitskiy stated this at the meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Andranik Margarian. Summing up the results of the second meeting of the Armenian-Ukrainian intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation, held today in Yerevan, Premier Margarian noted that the range of the discussed questions indicates the wish of the two countries to expand the bilateral cooperation. --0--

ARMENIAN PRESIDENT STATED AT THE MEETING WITH EU "TROIKA" ABOUT THE NECESSITY TO BEGIN ARMENIAN-AZERI ECONOMIC COOPERATION 20.02.2001 YEREVAN, February 20. /Mediamax/. The President of Armenia Robert Kocharian spoke today at the meeting with the "Troika" of the European Union of the necessity to begin Armenian-Azerbaijani economic cooperation. As Mediamax was informed in the press office of the president, Robert Kocharian said that Armenia attaches special importance to the development of relations with the European Union. According to him, Armenia considers itself a part of Europe and its objectives and priorities are consonant with the ones of Europe. EU "Troika" members - Foreign Minister of Sweden Anna Lindh, the EU High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, and the EU Commissioner responsible for External Relations, Chris Patten stated at the meeting that they are going to assist the development of cooperation between the countries of the region. Touching upon the theme of Artsax peace process, the sides agreed that without the dispute settlement it is impossible to fully use the whole potential of the region. In this connection, Robert Kocharian stressed that the settlement of the Artsax issue must bear a packet character. Armenian President noted that during the meetings with the President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev they strive to find a resolution which will provide the establishment of long-term peace in the region. President Kocharian also declared that the Artsax conflict settlement may seriously promote the beginning of economic cooperation between the conflict sides. However, the president noted, today such an initiative is rejected by official Baku. Armenian President expressed his confidence that the common economic interests may create a favorable atmosphere for the achievement of political resolution. EU IS READY TO ASSIST THE Artsax CONFLICT RESOLUTION 20.02.2001 YEREVAN, February 20. /Mediamax/. Anna Lindh, Foreign Minister of Sweden, presiding in the EU, stated today that Yerevan assured EU "Troika" that the Artsax conflict must be resolved only through peaceful, political means. After the meeting with Armenian President Robert Kocharian, the Minister informed that EU Troika discussed with the Armenian leadership the state of the Artsax conflict and the process of political and economic reforms in the region. The EU is expanding, and the Southern Caucasian region will become our neighbor afterwards, the Minister said. "It's important for us to develop relations with our future direct neighbors", she said. The EU will get the opportunity to be more involved in regional processes at the soonest settlement of the regional conflicts, including the Artsax issue", Anna Lindh said. "We're eagerly waiting for the results of the Artsax settlement, which will allow to continue the regional cooperation. On our part, we'll do everything possible to provide coordination of European institutions - the European Union, Council of Europe and the OSCE, we are ready to do everything possible to assist the resolution of this conflict, render economic and political assistance to the countries of the region", Anna Lindh said. --0--

EU "TROIKA" DISCUSSED IN YEREVAN PERSPECTIVES OF INCREASING EFFECTIVENESS OF TRACECA AND INOGATE PROGRAMS 20.02.2001 YEREVAN, February 20. /Mediamax/. At the meeting with the "Troika" of the European Union - the Foreign Minister of Sweden Anna Lindh, the EU High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, and the EU Commissioner responsible for External Relations, Chris Patten - Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian discussed today the perspectives of increasing the effectiveness of TRACECA and INOGATE programs. As Mediamax was informed in the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Armenia, the sides discussed also the steps of creating a retraining center, proposed by Armenia and approved by the EU regional seminar on information technologies. The Foreign minister of Sweden congratulated Armenia with the full membership in the Council of Europe. USA WELCOMES THE IDEA OF ARMENIAN-AZERBAIJANI-TURKISH TALKS 19.02.2001 YEREVAN, February 19. /Mediamax/. Carey Cavanaugh, the U.S. State Department's negotiator for the Nagorno Artsax dispute, welcomed the possibility of a trilateral Armenian-Azeri-Turkish meeting and of improved relations between Turkey and Armenia. As AP reports, Cavanaugh said that the lack of relationship between Turkey and Armenia is "not natural". The U.S. diplomat noted also that after the Parisian meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan there had been progress in the Artsax peace process. --0--

Foreign Minister of Sweden Anna Lindh said in the exclusive interview to Mediamax that it's too early to consider the terms of the possible membership of the Southern Caucasian states in the EU. "Regarding the question of Armenia's membership of the EU, I would like to give the same answer as the Union gives to all the countries that have a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement with the EU. The immediate concern is not the development of additional forms of cooperation or whether or not it is possible to become a member of the EU, but in an initial stage, it is a matter of focusing energies on implementing the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement already entered into with the EU", Anna Lindh said. "Naturally, the EU views with concern the obstacle which the conflict in Nagorno-Artsax represents for political and economic developments both in individual countries and in the region as a whole. Members of the joint intergovernmental Ukrainian-Armenian commission for economic cooperation will arrive today evening in Yerevan from Kiev, Mediamax was informed in the press service of the Embassy of the Ukraine. On February 20-21 the second conference of the joint intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation will begin in Yerevan, in the course of which the project of agreement between the Ukraine and Armenia on economic cooperation for 2001-2010 and the interstate program of long-term economic cooperation between Armenia and Ukraine for 2001-2010 is planned to be initialed. The intergovernmental commission will consider also a wide range of questions on further consolidation of bilateral trade-economic relations in such spheres as industry, energy and transport. The member of the Ukrainian delegation will meet in Yerevan with the President of Armenia Robert Kocharian and Prime Minister Andranik Margarian. On February 20 the signing of the Protocol of the 2nd conference of the joint intergovernmental Ukrainian-Armenian commission for economic cooperation will take place.
