Stormig
Thinking a bit more... If intelligence is energy, smartness is the power, harnessing it to make use of it... Don't know what to say about wisdom in this case - wear and tear?

Armen
BTW, what's this topic doing under "theology"? :shudder: style_images/master/snapback.png It is having fun!

gamavor
BTW, what's this topic doing under "theology"? :shudder: style_images/master/snapback.png I agree! While wisdom might have something to do with theology, smartness and intelligence hardly! It is about time to have sections in the forum such as: Philosophy, Sociology, Law, Paint Ball, Vanity Fair, Who has the longest.... fingers that is, etc…
DominO123
Not sure about the fuel tank... Does wisdom run out or is it re-applied, over and over? style_images/master/snapback.png Actually, the fuel tank or the battery are very good analogies I think. Bigger fuel tank or battery you have, more energy you can have as reserve... if you are too smart/intelligent and that you do not have enough big fuel tank, if you try to put all the fuel you got, the rest will go on the floor, or if the pressure is too big, or the energy is too intense for the battery, it'll blow. Moew intelligent you are, more wise you have to be, or else you'll endager yourself and others... like the mas scientist that build an atom bomb and will make it blow... he isn't enough wise for the intelligence he posess. Sip is very wise for having found such an analogy.
THOTH
Is Donald Trump smart, intelligent or wise? style_images/master/snapback.png All of the above...how much of each of the above - who knows - but he certainly has something going for him (along the lines of the above...). I think its a mistake to see this in linear terms - to even think that one's smarts/intelligence/wisdom is (directly) comparable to another's or what have you - we all have these in different areas - sure some/much overlap - but its very difficult to measure IMO. I think Sips original definition was quite good BTW - he is a very smart guy - don't you think?
Anileve
The reason why I asked about Trump is because I heard him speak recently. To me he's a spokesperson for greed who completely lacks eloquence. So after listening to him I thought to myself, he must be very smart to build such a powerful Trump empire but he is far from being intelligent. I do get confused about his wisdom thought, he must be, otherwise how would he make such brilliant financial decisions which require some glance into the futures. So in conclusion, perhaps it is possible for a person to be wise and smart but not be intelligent at all. Smartness in my opinion is related to pragmatism and knowledge of craft. Intelligence is more of a broader philosophical outlook on life and wisdom is a glance into the future. However, I think that an intelligent person is not necessarily smart or wise. Those are essentially different and minimally related values. All of them involve a different expansion of the mind.
Sip
Sip is very wise for having found such an analogy. You just reduced your ass kicking number by another 25% !!!! I would say that was also a wise move

Trump has built his empire on a simple but very risky manner, with lots of connections and good will on the part of the bankers. Basically this is the collateral rule, or just refinancing for your house, but implemented on a large scale and vision. Nothing extraordinary. If you remember clearly, some time ago he was in the spotlight for some not so clear dealings with bank mortgages. Now, he is smart, maybe not intelligent and almost everyone can do what he did, BUT is it MORAL? Yes, it is as long as your intentions are clear and you don’t fear failure. vava
Wow - I just saw this topic - err..., I don't often post under Theology Ok. Just to take a step back: Isn't 'smartness' actually knowledge? That's how I would see it. Knowledge can be acquired through study, experience and so forth. And as such, 'knowledge' is also expertise in a particular subject. A person may be extremely knowledgeable about nuclear physics, for example, BUT conversely have very little knowledge in other areas. So this fits with Sip's suggestion: Smartness: Ability to solve problems you have seen before rapidly. Now Intelligence is another matter all together. I'm more inclined to think that intelligence cannot be acquired through study; I believe it's inherent. Someone may work very hard to 'become smart', but that does not necessarily or automatically make them intelligent. Intelligence is the ability to comprehend, synthesize and analyse a given problem/situation, and come up with plausible solutions. This also fits (at least pretty closely) with Sip's suggestion: Intelligence: Ability to formulate and solve problems you have not seen before. Wisdom is unlike the other two, in that wisdom is more general. Wise Sip said: Wisdom: Not having to solve any problems yet being able to arrive at a correct conclusion. I believe wisdom is an ability to take a broad look at the big picture - to discern the right conclusion, yes, I agree - but wisdom goes further that that. Wisdom implies that the right conclusion be achieved through the correct means. This goes back to Domino's example of the atomic bomb. I do think that wisdom is dependant to some degree upon knowledge and inetlligence, however not entirely. I think wisdom also requires a great deal of intuition, which until now, has not been mentioned. Can wisdom be acquired? Can you study hard, travel, live many experiences and become wise? To a degree, yes - but not entirely. So with the above, we can modify that age old proverb to: An average man does not learn from his mistakes. A smart man learns from his mistakes. An intelligent man learns from the mistakes of others A wise man....... I'll allow someone else to fill in the blank.
