gurgen
I wonder if any of you listen to opera and if so what is your favourite? I personally like Die Walküre by Wagner and I also like Die Zauberflöte
Anoushik
My favorite opera thus far is Mozart’s Don Giovanni, especially Elvira’s aria Ah, chi mi dice mai and followed by the “Catalogue” aria. Ahh Mozart… His operas are so funny!!! Those of you who think opera is boring or Classical music in general, are missing out a lot. For example, in the famous “Catalogue” aria the servant takes out a black book and describes all kinds of women listed in the book that his rich master has seduced and slept with. In Italy, six hundred forty, in Germany two hundred thirty-one, a hundred in France, in Turkey ninety-one, but in Spain there are a thousand and three. Among these there are farm girls, maids, city girls… countesses, baronesses… he wants in winter a plumb one, he wants in summer a rather thin one… of the old he makes a conquest for the pleasure of adding them to the list, but his dominant passion is the young beginner. He is not bothered if she is rich, if she’s ugly, if she’s pretty, as long as she wears a skirt. But on a more serious note, Gurgen, I really like Verdi's operas in general. Actually, to tell you the truth I rarely listen to opera, and then only to arias, simply because opera should be seen performed on stage. Anoushik
I guess no one else likes opera It's funny how opera was considered to be a popular entertainment for the masses a hundred years ago while now the only thing that satisfies the masses are Janet Jackson's boobs. Actually I bet if this thread was called Janet Jackson's boob it would be viewed more often. It's really disturbing for me that my stupid thread with the smileys has gotten (as of the moment) 39 replies and 465 views in only a matter of two days, while this thread was created yesterday morning and has only 1 reply (now 2) and 32 views of which 6 of the views I contributed myself only by logging in at different times. And if I hadn't replied right now it would forever go without any more views. Pathetic. I understand that most of you have no idea about opera and if you do, the only association you had with opera was in Tom and Jerry/Bugs Bunny cartoons. But that you choose to just avoid this thread, ignore it without taking a look, is just, like I said, pathetic. I think I should bring forth the article about the dumbing-down of culture one more time. I am also aware that I'm just writing in vain, since most of the members will ignore to look into this thread once again.
Sip
It's funny how opera was considered to be a popular entertainment for the masses a hundred years ago while now the only thing that satisfies the masses are Janet Jackson's boobs. Ok let me put it this way ... Between Opera and any of Janet Jackson's body parts or even "performances", I would pick Opera on any given day of the week and twice on Sunday. So now why I don't like, or more precisely, don't listen to, Opera ... it's because it requires too much patience and time. Plus it's somewhat hard for me to jam to opera while driving ... it doesn't have a repetitive mindless rhythm or easy to follow or easy to sing to melodies. I tried to sing along with Mozart's magic flute once in the car and I lost my voice for 3 days. I mostly listen to music in the car while driving. I like it loud, I like it to pound, and I like to feel it all the way into my spine when the BASS hits. That would explain the roughly 1000 Watts of RMS power I have pumping into my speakers ... Opera just doesn't do it for me. I hope that answered your question and showed the level of my short attention span and shallownees when it comes to music. P.S: I learned of this thread from the impressions of the day thread so that was a clever move to advertise it over there. <--- smilie just for you Anoushik
Anoushik
Thank you for your post, Sip. And thank you especially for this . Sip, of course you're right. It's really hard to just listen to opera (I stated this in my first post here). I'm just commenting about people not looking into this thread, that's all. I think almost everyone when first logs in systematically looks into the new threads (or threads with new comments) and they just ignore this. That's all I have to say. Also, it seems to me that if I hadn't brought this to attention, I could go on and write anything I wanted here (also obscenities of all kinds) and no one would know it. Sip
Careful now ... someone searching for Jackson's boob might end up here some day I have to admit ... I skipped over this thread as I didn't think I would have anything relevant to say. Also, keep in mind that there are often a lot of lurkers that read but don't necessarily participate (or even register in the forum)... and hyeforum threads are known to have shown up on google searches too! So you never know who might be reading what you say.
Anonymouse
The Mouse admits he's not well versed on opera but he does love Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, which he consideres the pinnacle of melodic achievement, and a zenith in humanity. Verdi's Macbeth is another one appreciated by the Mouse.
Sasun
I like classical music very much - Bach is my most favorite. I like opera as well but less than symphony and other classical. Nowadays the only opportunity to listen to opera is on the radio. But I don't remember to ever have listened to opera from start to end. Anileve
Good thread Gevo. And Anoushik jan, you have one passionate fan of Opera here, please pass me the slippers and allow me to get comfortable, also I suggest to read my thoughts on Janets bosom. The weirdest thing is that I thought exactly the same thing today, hence “Impressions of the Day”. I would say that my favorite operais “Carmen”, although it is the world's most popular opera and it's got a flavor of the musical with lavish costumes and dances, I simply cannot get enough of Habanera, the music is just tantalizing. Sadly, the production I saw last year was hardly of better quality. Carmen seriously needed a good ginger tea to repair her weak vocal cords. Agreeably Verdi’s operas are superb, I absolutely loved “Rigoletto”, when I saw it a while back in the Met Opera House. Which I'd have to say as a proud New Yorker is in my opinion the the most beautiful Opera House probably in the world, second is in Vienna. And I have to disagree with Seap, certain arias are quite catch and best for singing in the shower. Like the famous aria from Rigoletto, here is a little sumtin sumtin comical from it: La donna e mobile Qual piuma al vento Muta daccento E di pensiero Translation: Woman's fidelity Turns like the weather Sways like a feather Tossed in a breeze Yeah right! And that's coming from an ITALIAN man! Another one that is great is Mozart's Magic Flute, always very entertaining plots. In Yerevan I actually performed in the production, but I didn't sing ( I don't think they would like it very much), I was merely a little dancer. I know I am not only a geek, I am also a cheese ball. Operas are wonderful, you just have to get into them and perhaps have someone introduce you to them. When that happens it's pretty inevitable that you will be pulled in. I think I'm going to see Don Carlo (Verdi) this June, since it's the only one going here in this shithole Holland, but I'm determined to go see the next Wagner festival in Berlin. Axel you can come
