If things go the way they're going, we'll need some sort of legislated privacy protection as individual computer users. Of coure, with that we'll get some undesired rules & regulations - but I think it will eventually be necessary... gradually we'll begin to put ourselves under the watchful eye of Big Brother (and all this because of unethical Marketers!!) Someone bought a ticket in Atlanta using my credit card number. I made some motorcycle related purchases using my credit card on line before I was aware the venerability of my computer. I did get reimbursed for the ticket and I abruptly cancelled the credit card. This is very serious issue and I suspect very soon these companies must comply. Sip Posted July 19, 2004 Report Share Posted July 19, 2004 Well there is a thick line between harmless data collected about marketing as part of an agreement to install free software (as long as it is explicitly stated and not hidden in complex mumbo jumbo) and out right criminal actions such as credit card fraud. Most "spyware" falls in the first category and is not intended to be malicious. However, I fully agree that the user must be informed of ANY action the software installed on her system will perform, especially if it is going to communicate data to a third party. Often what ends up happening is that a system may get "infected" with several such "harmless" trackers after which the resources that get consumed for their crap becomes substantial. I suspect what is going to end up happening is that for a while to come, this will turn out to be like the cat and mouse game the virus phenomena turned into ... more and more sophisticated schemes will pop up circumventing the rules until the anti-whatevers catch up and put a halt to them and then wait till the circle re-forms and we go at it again. This is an auto response message. We will process your email as soon as possible." They're greek by the looks of it but I'm sure you figured that out. I don't read greek myself, so I have no idea why you're getting emails. Perhaps someone's used your email address and registered at their site? Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do about this... Once someone (by error, I think) registered for a local swinger group using my email address - should have seen the resposes i received oh boy! At least yours are just Greek Armenians... Sooner or later, the cat & mouse game has got to end. I think it would be a better result if the internet community would find ways to ostracize and unroot these unethical types of practices, rather than resort to eventual legislative measures (which would prove costly, and likely not very efficient). I think when the industry realises that their pocketbooks are being negatively impacted by the spread of such (IMO, 'malicious enough' ) code - then they will be forced to react. Take Armat for example, don't you think he's going to think twice about pulling out his credit card next time he wants to purchase something on-line? What happened to him was a criminal act and not a result of the run of the mill "spy-ware" that he has been complaining about. Even as loose as things are, I don't think any legitimate company would risk engaging in that type of an act as ultimately as open as the net is, it's easy to trace where the money is coming and going. We are going to go through growing pains and legislating laws isn't going to do anything for a global entity like the internet. It's gotta come from within the "community" as you said. Harut Posted July 21, 2004 Report Share Posted July 21, 2004 thanks. actually, the option that i had to disable to view it in windows was "Hide Protected operating system files". but i still have a problem. the reason i wanted to do that was because i had deleted a dll file from system32 folder and now i can't start the windows. actually, it starts, but after logging in, it automatically logs me off (not shutdown, just log off). i connected the hard drive to another computer and tried to restore the file to its original directory. but guess what... i didn't delete the regular way. i was using command prompt and deleted from there. so, now it's not in recycle bin. but, now, i'm not really sure if it is because of that file. the reason that i deleted that file was because it had very suspesion name and i believe it was a spyware file. (adaware couldn't get rid of this spyware. 180solutions, it kept coming back). so, any suggestions on how to fix this? i'm still thinking that it might be just another spyware or similar thing that does this and not that dll file i deleted. actually, i installed that hard drive on another computer and listed all the dll files in system32 directory and compared it with the list on that host computer's hard drive. no dll file was missing on that hard drive. For that, you will need a converter program. The built-in windows picture viewer that comes with windows XP can do just that. Here is an excellent free application that will do it as well, plus much more such as resizing, cropping, etc ... http://www.irfanview.com Just open the jpg file in that program, then save as gif.
