vava
Plextor DVD Rom +/-RW CDR/RW Sip, would you mind explaining to me what the significance of the '+/-' concerning DVD writers?
Sip
They are basically different format specifications. As far as I know, the +R and +RW are most compatible with regular DVD players. The DVD-recorder formats have been a MESS for years with the start of DVD-RAM long ago which wasn't really compatible with anything. THIS website will tell you all the details you want to know. It lists a few advantages that the newer +R and +RW formats have over the older -R/-RW. Note that most of these don't really make a difference if you are going to write data to DVD media for backup purposes. But if you want compatibility with a wide range of DVD players (video playback), then you have to start to ponder the differences between the formats. ED
Guys, I'm having a problems with my notebook here, its slowing down on daily bases and I don’t know whats causing this, after couple of minutes online its chocking and crashes, I have 1.3ghz 256sdr ram with 64mg nivada video card with win 200 pro, I heard that those spy programs can be the cause of it, I scan my hard drive (20g with 11 available) almost every 3 days, its clean, ram is at 100mg or around that available when I use it, but it still gives me problems, what is the cause what can you suggest I do? Can it be those spy programs? I clean my cookies and delete my temp files everyday also Thanks
vava
Are you sure it's not your connection? If you're concerned about spyware, you may want to try Adaware, or Spybot. They're the two most popular Spyware detection software available nowadays. Do you have an antivirus? Have you updated the definitions? How long since you last re-installed the system? If it's been a while and you're constantly adding and deleting stuff, you may need to defrag your disk, although with thes newer OSes you should really have much of a problem... Let us know how to make out, cause it's not very easy to diagnose a problem like this at a distance
vava
One more thing - is it only internet applications that crash and choke? Do you have problems even when you're off-line? Here's the link to download SpyBot: Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.
Sip
Are you up to date with the windows update patches and virus detectors? You may have one of these RPC viruses because they do exactly what you said ... they'll choke your resources and really slow things down. Although programs shouldn't crash. gamavor
I need advice from our computer gurus for purchasing laptop. My preference is Toshiba, but if you have any other suggestions please go ahead. It should be in the price range up to $1,500. Feel free to be sarcastic and ridicule the poor lawyer who wouldn't hesitate to defend your constitutional rights if and when necessary. Azat
Gamavor, have you heard the old saying that says "All roads lead to Dell" The only person that I know who does not like Dell stuff is Anivele, but what the heck do women know about computers. Just kidding Eve. My friend just got a Sony Vaio and I really liked the looks of the Viao as well, but I do hear that they are not as reliable. I use to own the Toshiba that was super (I guess I was not much help)
gamavor
Thanks Azat! I started hating Dell since the first day in the University. I've heard that they are famous for some not very honnest practices when it comes to parts and warranty. Other than that I like the design of Dell better than Toshiba. Soni is good for TVs and Audio Equipment.
vava
We have 2 recent model Dell Inspiron laptops at our office. They're both a heap of trouble. Mind you, the warranties have been honoured and any trouble we've had has been taken care of in an appropriate manner. The Dell desktops I used including the model I'm surrently using have been without reprieve. I hesitate to buy anything Sony. Let's just leave it at that. I have Toshiba M200 Tablet PC as a demo model that works like a charm. It's my only personal experience with Toshiba, and I have to say that it has been purely positive, with the exception of a few minor annoyances, mostly related to the OS (Windows XP tablet edition). There are some solid discount models - you could pick up a copy of Mobile PC magazine to check out their reviews.
vava
tell me more about the re-installed the system? Thanks When you re-install your system - you should follow a few basic tips: Backup ALL of your perosnal files (including preference settings and other 'hidden' items, like your bookmarks, email folders if you're not using IMAP, documents, address books etc.) Also make sure you have the original CDs of all the applications you use (and the corresponding serial #s) on hand. Then you do it the old fashioned way - use a disk utility, boot from CD and format you're hardrive, and begin installing Windows from scratch. The good thing is, you'll have a clean system and be free of all the junk you accumulate without knowing it. The bad part is, it takes time - and if you're not sure about what you're doing you might lose some data that you may need (by not backing it up of course!) Good luck! axel
Gamavor, regardless of the actual brand, make sure it comes with a quality display, preferably high-res (>= 1400x1050). Edited May 31, 2004 by axel

vava
Would any of you guys know how to post a media player on here? Thanks for your help in advance. You can't actually post a Media Player file ON the board. That would simply cost WAY TOO MUCH bandwidth. But, what you can do, is post a link TO the media player file you want us to see. Although, if it's not already posted somewhere, you may need to find a free webhost to upload your file temporarily.

Azat Jan, why do he want to post an EXE file here? Probably because it is a hell of a big virus(for 800 Kb it sure is) that took him months to write, and he want to post it here. But why? Why? OK! EdoJan, I can't keep it secret anymore. Azat, the Virus infect your computer and turn it to a MAC. BTW, I hate using the word Jan. Armat
Ok,After trying the cheap free solutions Adaware 6.0 Search and dystroy my frustrations were pretty high. These free programs are ok but they don't remove the real trojans and viruses and for that one must pay Right? So I shelled 29.99 and bought Spy Sweeper #1 by PC magazine. This program found 21 software which incuded trojans, toolbars, spyware etc. and delleted all. My computer works ten times faster and no pop ups.I am finally free for now at least from these pests.Anyware I thought to share this info. vava
Glad you found a solution to your problem! These kinds of 'pests' are truly more than a nuisance. If things go the way they're going, we'll need some sort of legislated privacy protection as individual computer users. Of coure, with that we'll get some undesired rules & regulations - but I think it will eventually be necessary... gradually we'll begin to put ourselves under the watchful eye of Big Brother (and all this because of unethical Marketers!!)
