of course there is a soul!! humans are not a series of biochemical reactions! the soul is the energy that drives the body and gives it energy and life, and when it departs, the body dies and the soul moves on to another plane of existence...as far as soulmates...it does seem kind of 'fairy-tale'-ish! however there are many right and wrong people for everyone! we all hope to weed out the wrong ones, the ones who are not good and hopefully meet those who lift us up and...PICK ONE! :P

maybe it is like a fairy tale but i think a soulmate is someone who understands you very well…you have a lot in common and you can finish each other's sentences and understand each other without even saying a word(eye contact....mind reading lol)…you know they're like a part of you that if you get rid off you will kinda feel empty inside

There is no soul, but that does not mean that humans are only biochimical reactions, there is a lot more, but that does not necessarly means there must be a soul, neither that life is the end. Life could continue beyond what we consider our "physical" body without the need of a soul, and I can even say that the soul in itself is something that would reduce men more than any other concept.

I don't think there is a soul ... I think "life" is all physical, chemical, and biological and as long as blood is circulating and those neurons firing in our brain we can think and function. When all that stops, so do we and that's the end.

Yes! You are right, but what if in another place in this Universe or another Universe, there is a Sip that will exist with very similair brain connections in the difference that that person will live longer than you? What would happen? I mean, since soul does not exist, the only things it takes to make you would be the brain connections that you have. Right? Would this Sip you are here not the other Sip on the other place?

Actually, what makes you is not only the brain connection you have, but more than that, what you are is the interpretation you have of the world you observe. The world is modified by your presence, it keeps a virtual image of you by those modifications, you are recorded in this world by this interaction... exactlly the same way that the brain record the information that few neurons that died keep in them. After a surgery of the brain, when they took out a part of it, the one having the surgery forget things storted in that area, from the interactions that the brain had with the neurons that are now lost, it slowly is able to remember most of the lost parts, not all, because there is no enought neurons to process the information that is still there in the virtual image kept.

What I am trying to say is that what you are is not only you, but as well the world in which you live in, from all the interactions you have you leave a memory of you in this world, so before saying that there is an end to life, one must try to know exactlly what is "life" what is "conscienceness" why it exist, and if it is a phenomenology of the observer more than anything else, you observe so "you are." It is a very complext thing, more when you consider like me that there is no soul, those that claims there is one, just close the topic by giving the soul the properties that can not be debated, on the other hand, when we say there is no soul, we must understand why some things exist.

I know we are changing the subject, I am doing what I accused others to do, but I am making that topic a lot more interesting. :D

Some people have souls, some people don't (e.g. Domino and Sip ) :P

I was sure you would come up with this. Using my own logic to attack me eh? :D

But, since matter is just an illusion, what we are is already something that we shall call soul, so my conception of the Universe does not need a soul to give us the possibility of immortality, Ouish... not immortality, but rather eternity... God promess you immortality, I give you better than that, I give you the possibility of eternity. :P

immortality = eternity !!!

you say matter is illusion, i do agree with you on that 100%...so, how is it that we can feel compassion, empathy, concern (at least the majority of us)...is this ALL explained mechanistically? maybe to a certain extent, like the hand that reaches out to help a friend in need by picking up the phone to see how that friend is doing, the neurons firing to command the hand to raise and certain areas of the brain get activated and the person remembers the phone number and uses hand eye coordination to dial the number!---sure, if you're going to take that approach to expalin everything, then yes! you are correct up to a certain point!---however, there is a force, a guiding drive behind ALL action...if you break everything down and try and analyze it, you won't find the answers you're looking for! life is not an engineering problem!! ---to really be enlightened one needs to look at life holistically! try to see how each piece of the puzzle fits in with the greater scheme of things and not focus on the geometry of the edges of the individual pieces themselves!-- life is a learning experience basically, a school for the soul and we are all students for life! we registered when we were conceived/born and hopefully when we graduate from this life we will have learned many valuable lessons to take with us to another level of consciousness AND we will have left behind a legacy of kindness and generosity and not one of fear, hate, and ignorance...just like humans have physical, emotional, intellectual needs (referring to Maslow's hierarchy here)...one thing he left out that is THE most important thing is a spiritual need! and i see many people who sadly go through life without knowing that they need this! (especially in this country)...it's like the anorexic who needs food, but doesn't realize this and has a distorted idea that what she(or he) needs is "the perfect body" or just to lose another 3 or 4 lbs...it is sad how so many are so disconnected from the source that can offer us infinite strength that we fail to see the existence of the inner light that truely IS who we are, for the body is just a transitory vehicle for the soul and we ARE the driver that is immortal and infinte and eternal...

someone you grow with, that has known you for a long period of time can fill that void, the person doesnt have to be a single "soulmate."

example being, my best friend, have known her for 9 yrs, i love her to death, and do/feel everything u mentioned above

hyebruin, you are a spiritual person and a good person. I can't add anything other than that, all those things are just a question of definition, call it soul I call it no-soul(the Buddhist conception of the no-soul). You have a meaning for your life, and that is the important part in all this.

Just one note, immortality and eternity are not the same, immortality is when something has a starting point but not an end, eternity is when there is no starting point neither an end.

Oh and I'm not an Atheist, even if that was what I seemed to be, I'm agnostic, actually not really agnostic, lets say I am Domino, my new religion. ;)

ah ha!! but when you look at the bigger picture nothing has a starting point! everything has always been and will always be...thus my statement: immortality = eternity...(but i do see the semantics of what you're referring to)...sometimes i believe language IS a barrier for communication...reminds me of a song lyric: "i try to say 'i love you' but the words get in the way"

I am much more practically minded. I started a few months before birth and will end at death. For me, nothing existed before I came to be and nothing will exist after death. The rest of you feel free to do whatever you want after I'm dead :)

While I'm alive, we'll obey the laws of thermodynamics and regular old physics :D

Last part was a joke ;)

But Sip, how can you accept that after death you won't have any consciousness? How can you be one minute and the next minute be no more? How do you make sense of it? Doesn't that thought bother you?

I've had a couple of surgeries when I was knocked out ... nothing serious just fixing broken bones and what not ... I didn't even have dreams! I was out COLD ... so I kinda know what death must "feel" like ... and no it doesn't really bother me at all. Nothing will matter after I'm dead so why should it bother me?!!!!

When during surgery I was also put on general anesthesia and it seemed like I had forever lost three hours of my life (no dreams, feelings) I started questioning my thoughts about consciousness after death. But no matter how I think I simply refuse to believe that I won't have some kind of consciousness after death.

I don't know... If that is the case then what's the point of living if we won't get anything out of life?

we have no idea what death is like until we've actually felt it!!--my dad had a near death experience about 3 years ago; he was clinically dead for 5 minutes! code blue! thank God i was not there or else i would have fallen totally apart! while my sister and her b/f were sobbing in the waiting room, our dad was inbetween worlds deciding to come back or to cross over to the next world!-- and this man is definitely not thinking about spirtuality and God and death and consciousness in the sense that i do! and we had never really had these sorts of discussions either, so there is no self-fulfilling prophecy or bias at play here!! he's just a regular armenian parent!!

however, when he did miraculosly come back to us he told us of a "dream" he had where he was floating on top of his life-less body with a flat ECG and was watching the surgeons perform on him; he could see all and he could hear all...AND that he heard this voice that told him "it's not your time, you have to go back"...my dad wasn't even much religious before his heart attack, but after that incident things changed! he had new faith because he had been there...between life and death...

ever since then he always tells us that he came back for the two of us, my sis and me :)

What Is a Soulmate?

by Nina Lee Braden

What is a soul Mate? Is it a buzz word being tossed around by New Agers and Romance publishers in order to increase book sales and seminar fees? Is soulmate just another term for true love or is it something else, something more, something bigger and deeper?

Good question, and I don't have a clear answer. If you browse the Web, searching under the term "soulmate," you'll find testimonials of How I Found My Soulmate on the Web, and pointers to Personals Ads for you to search for a personal soulmate, but you won't find much hard information on soulmates or much discussion on what a soulmate is.

There is no definitive theory of soulmates, no accepted definition. Edgar Cayce,

Richard Bach, and Elizabeth Clare Prophet have all written at length on soulmates. Some say that there are different types or categories of soulmates. Three types frequently discussed are the soulmate as an essence twin or counterpart--one's other half, the companion or lover who helps one achieve a goal, and the karmic teacher who comes into your life to teach you an important lesson.

A belief in reincarnation is not necessary for a belief in soulmates although a great deal of literature on soulmates does presume a belief in reincarnation. Perhaps I'm just a Soulmates Skeptic, but I just cannot believe that there is one and only one person for each of us. In my own life, and in the lives of many friends, I know that there have been times when we've been convinced that, "This is the one. This person is my One True Love, my Soulmate."

However, often in these cases, for one reason or another, the relationship hasn't

worked out. Were we mistaken? Was that person not our soulmate? Or, was the

person our soulmate, and, for one reason or another, we just weren't able to make things work?

I have no answers; however, I do have a theory of my own. I have a friend who introduced me to the theory of a soul tribe. To her, there are many people who have important connections to us, karmic connections, if you prefer to use that term. To her, these people constitute our soul tribe.

In adapting this idea, I feel that we can have what the popular press seems to call or identify as a soulmate relationship with many different persons who are in our soul tribe. Perhaps in a lifetime, we may run into five, ten, or twenty different persons who are members of our soul tribe, and, under the right circumstances, we could have an intense, karmic, soul-shattering relationship with any one of them, or, with several of them, in some cases.

Another way to think of this is to say that we have multiple soulmates.

And, although I can't quite swallow the concept of one and only one true love for each of us per lifetime, I can reluctantly allow the possibility of multiple soulmates. I don't think that there is an unlimited supply of soulmates out there for each of us, but I do believe that each of us has one or more persons who can help us to growth and become all that we can be, who will support, honor, shelter, guide, serve, succor, challenge, adore, and love unreservedly. I also think that most of us manage in some way to miss out on these relationships. Therefore, we are always searching for the ideal relationship, the ideal partner, the soulmate, if you will.

Love is love, and love is never to be taken for granted or belittled. To me, the question is not, "Is this person my soulmate?" but "Is there real love here?" not "Who is my soulmate?" but "Do I give and receive love generously and unselfishly?" not "When will I  meet my soulmate?" but "Am I ready to be in an intensely loving relationship, ready to be challenged for growth?"

You are not really an atheist, you are a nihilist. :) The statment you made before this post, about there was nothing before your birth and will be nothing after is a nihilist conception, the majority of the atheist, even if an important part of them does not believe in the soul or a possible life after death, believe there was something before their birth, even if they were not there, nihilists believe that once you are gone, nothing will exist in this world, it will stop to exist.

Another thing here, it is not because when you awake from the experience you discribe you did not remembered something that it necessarly means that nothing happened during that moment. It's like dreams that one can't remember, an altered moment of conscienceness where the information is not recorded in the neurons, but once you sleep again and dream again of the same thing and that you remember this time that dream, you will realise that in that dream you have memories of thinks that you do not have in wakefulness. Altered moments of conscienceness do exist. Once the brain stops it can not record new datas, but concenciouness is more complext than telling that it is only the product of a brain, the brain record what you were a fraction of second before, so you know you existed, but knowing you exist now is a different story. I mean, when you die what you have observed, this world still exist, the observation can not exist without an observer, the other obsvers of this world, and you observation that has influenced what you observed influence the other observers which influence in their turn the observed thing.

You as the Sip are the possibility among inflinit numbers of possibilities, and you are not only you, but you are as well dependent of what you observe, if you were not able to observe you could not be self aware, the observation is as much you as you, and both together makes you you, as long as there is one of those two existing, its existance is only possible by the existance of the other. if there is an observer, there must be something to observe, if what you observed is still there, in order to be the observed the observer must exist, in this cases it is what others will observe after your death... but since you are not only this Sip, there will be this virtual memory of you left... and as well there is the possibility of your existance again, since just by your existance you prove that a Sip could exist. I just have hope on those infinit Universes that will bring me alive again.

hyebruin, have you added your fathers testemony on those lists of NDE?
