Egoyan made one good movie as far as I'm concerned and that was Krapp's Last Tape. Another movie that was almost as powerful was Felicia's Journey. Both based on Irish works. I'm sorry, I'm just not into anything else he made. Maybe I need more braincells to appreciate his art, but at this point, I don't. With Ararat, for me, there was no need for all the hoopla around it, making it artificially complex as if without it it would be impossible for him to say what he wanted to say. Some people may appreciate this, but I don't. Keep it simple and thought-provoking. It's just not my style.

Nairi, It's not more braincells you need to "appreciate" Ararat, it's less braincells. :)

All of its not particularly complex "complexity" is just pompous flim-flam added to make a silly and amateurish film appear to be artistically important (and thus above criticism). It's the cinematic equivalent of blancmange - something that outwardly looks grand and nourishing but which in reality consists of little more than air.

Being among those not favoured by nature, with my lack of brain cells, I am honoured to have among us the unique Steve, the only that has the power to know without doubt the intentions of an artistic pieces author. :)

There are blancmange films, blancmange art, blancmange literature, blancmange architecture, blancmange people, and probably even blancmange donkeys.

Come friendly flames, and melt them all.

You forgot Canadian blancmange film juries for awarding a blancmange "art" the Genie award for the best film. They should have phoned Steve to take accurate decisions... maybe for the next time. :)

Fahrenheit 9/11

Go see it and then tell me if you think the existence of a just God is at all possible. :(

I suppose you are reffering to the woman imploring god to avenge?

In terms of possibilities, it is always possible that a god do exist. What are the probabilities is another question, but since it is a probability, it is somewhere in those couple of infinit universes... We make of this world what we want to make of it... we can live in a universe where there is a god or not. This is our choices. :D

Oh no, no, no, not this one either :D

We won't turn this thread into a religious debate like so many other threads  :angel_not:

Great! Should I start a new thread about Classical music? :P You'd be surpised how many controversies you can find even discussing this subject. :D Too bad most people are not familiar with Classical music.

What kind of controversies? Like the fact that Beethoven was a pantheist? Inspired by Goethe's philosophy. :D His "Missa Solemnis" is a pantheist composition like some others. :D

Domino did it again. :lol2:

No, I didn't know that one. There was some talk going on a couple of years ago that Beethoven had African genes. (Even my history professor mentioned it.) :P

Domino, it's amazing how easy it is to find things on the net. Here you can read about some controversies surrounding the world of Classical music. Isn't it ridiculous?

oh Geez! Come now.... I'm sure we can dream up some of our own controversies on par with these... :o

Anyway - I'd just like to point out that that I've attempted to see moore's new film twice - and both times it's been sold out. (This proving that the almighty dollar has more power than the political lobbies that [allegedly] tried to sqaush the film and prevent it's release). Will review in slightly more detail once I actually get to see the film.

Spiderman 2

Pros: Best '1on1' fights I have ever seen! Cool 'bad guy'.

Cons: Tobey Maguire (Spiderman) looks like a spastic, unatractive leading lady (I forget her name), too many close-ups (on Tobey Maguire  ), too much 'romance', too long...

Verdict: worth seeing just for the fight scenes + shirtless Tobey for the girls

7/10

I also saw Super Size Me a few weeks back, that was hillarious 8/10

King Arthur

Pros: Guenevere (sp?). The Saxons are almost as scary as the orcs in Lord of the Rings :). The battle on the frozen lake....erm....and not much else

Cons: Gueneveres 'battle-dress'. Dialogue - PLEASE STOP TALKING GARBAGE!. Constantly putting down the Church and Rome! - WHY?. To say this firm is historically inaccurate is an understatement. And many MANY more.

Verdict: This film taxes your brain :(

Secret Window was interesting. It was directed(?) by the same person who did Panic Room. The common thing in both was that the ends were a bit disappointing - less so in Secret Window, of course, for it wasn't as drawn-out as Panic Room. I didn't know that Stephen King had a book "Secret Window and Garden."

Anyway, I haven't been able to let go of talking like a git (or should I say a hick) when I feel like it - "You stole mah stoh-rey." :D

I Robot

Pros: The chick in the shower! :o . Will Smiths one-liners. Awesome fight and chase scenes. The bike! Good story. Many MANY more

Cons: nothing major comes to mind.......could have been a little more deeper/philosophical I guess, but Im happy it wast coz it might have turned out like the Matrix sequels.

Verdict: Best Sci-Fi thriller EVER! A MUST-SEE!

The Chronicles of Riddick

Oh boy! Where do I start. In short, this movie is f###ing shit! Being a sequel to the half-decent 'Pitch Black' and the nice preview trailers I got treated to, I thought this would be just as good as Pitch Black if not better: how wrong I was

The beginning is not bad, but soon things start deteriorating as Vin Diesel (Riddick) appears and starts shooting out Riddickulous one-liners like a gatling gun. The story/plot is SO BAD with SO MANY holes in it you could be forgiven for thinking it was conjured up by a down-syndromed eight year-old. This movie assaults your intelligence and senses to the point where you feel like your bleeding from every orifice. To make matters even more miserable for myself I had contracted the flu a couple days before the movie, had a huge headache (you know the one where your ears are buzzing) and my throat was f###ed so it was difficult to swallow anything, so I hardly touched my 'Mega' popcorn :( . Anyhow, the effect of the movie and my cold was that it took me 5 days to recover enough to write this review.

Some notable things said by audience during the movie:

"This movie is absurd"

"Whats happening to my brain?"

"I cant see" - during a hand-to-hand combat scene where the camera jumps around SO MUCH, masking the terrible acting. Everything about this movie is in fact terrible.

Verdict: Dont forget to spit on Riddicks poster after you have left the theatre, or better still dont see the movie.

Never watched any of the Austin Powers movies and I fell asleep in the first five minutes, so no review on the latest (I can't even remember the name) as I reposed on a bed in an air-conditioned room. Maybe it wasn't the movie but a hot day out. Gosh I can't even remember what other movies we saw on vacation.

I thought king arthur kicked ass ... it's one of the better king arthur movies. Of course the monty python version is by faaaaaaar the best. The thing I liked most about this movie was the different perspective it portraid on the story of the knights. Things make a lot more sense now.

Blowup

Cast: David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, John Castle, Jane Birkin, Gillian Hills, Peter Bowles and Veruschka von Lehndorff

Directed by: Michelangelo Antonioni

Year: 1966

Six years after the seminal L’Avventura, Michelangelo Antonioni caused another international feeding frenzy with his Palm d’Or winner Blowup, the story of a disillusioned fashion photographer, Thomas (the great David Hemmings), in 60s mod London who discovers he’s captured a murder on camera. Antonioni creates a film that questions the politics of its protagonist and, at the same time, challenges the way we watch movies. In many ways, this is the best film ever made about movies, because Antonioni recognizes the fragile nature of celluloid and the need to preserve great images. Which is why the film is to profoundly moving—by film’s end, Antonioni sadly suggests that one day Blowup won’t exist (or mean anything to anyone) if it doesn’t continue to be seen, or if its meaning isn’t blown-up. Thomas is a man who loves women more than he loves money and he is more than happy to disassociate himself from the Vietnam War. “It’s not my fault there’s no peace,” says the photographer, who associates money with freedom and whose images and acquisitions (he buys a wooden plane propeller from an antique store) suggest stalled movement (read: political inaction). The models in the film are no different than the audience at the Yardbirds concert (yes, that’s Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck on stage)—inactive subjects that don’t understand why they’re being photographed or listening to music. Because Thomas is enticed by images that stand still, Antonioni encourages him to move throughout the film. When he accidentally photographs a crime scene at a disturbingly serene park, he’s encouraged to activate a coded narrative via blowups of his photographs. (The chilling interaction of still photographs may be one of the greatest sequences in the history of cinema.) Though Thomas respects movement (he’s repulsed by Vanessa Redgrave’s graceless dancing and he moves around his apartment effortlessly), he certainly doesn’t understand it. As such, his struggle to activate images becomes a fascinating call to arms and an even more interesting evocation of a universal need for self-discovery. Thomas happily engages with a group of mimes throughout the film, but he doesn’t understand them as much as he is enticed by their surface spectacle. Only by film’s end does he understand that an image that isn’t there doesn’t really exist and Blowup daringly suggests that an image without politics isn’t an image at all.

Romance X (1999)

Although deeply in love with her boyfriend - and indeed sleeping in the same bed with him - a schoolteacher cannot handle the almost complete lack of intimacy he will allow. Increasingly frustrated, she gradually finds her sexual appetites leading her into ever more risky situations, including a developing one with the headmaster.

=====================================

The most ridiculous film I have ever seen, right behind “The Journey”. Supposedly it claims to be highly erotic and racy with an appetizing plot. However, I have never seen something as unsexy as this poppycock. The protagonists of the film are completely absurd, the plot is idiotic and the entire move is about bored and miserable looking people moping around and rationalizing in a very glooming setting. There was a “risqué” scene with some bondage involved and that just made me fall off the chair from a shock. While the bonding was going on, the old guy with a flaming red shirt, twice the age of the actress kept asking her if she was hurting, then she broke down and cried, he caressed her hair as if she was his daughter (that was actually more believable), afterwards she said that it’s ok and she’ll do it again, after which she started her waterworks again. I mean it just can’t get any more ridiculous than that. Garbage! Thank god, I didn’t have to pay for it.

Mean Girls

First of all, let me say that I went there with a couple of friends, purely for Lindsay Lohan.

It wasn't really a great movie or anything but there were some funny jokes, more than you can say of the last LotR. I expected really sentimental bullshit but fortunately that was saved for the last 15 minutes. It could have done without, but apparently most American filmmakers just can't help themselves. OK movie, stupid ending. I'm going to be generous.

6.5/10 (5 of those points are for Lindsay Lohan)
