Karabakh has evidence that mercenaries and terrorists are fighting in hostilities

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) authorities have evidence of mercenaries and terrorists taking part in the current military actions in the Karabakh conflict zone.

The NKR Presidential Spokesperson, Davit Babayan, told about the abovementioned to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“There are grounds to declare that mercenaries from the Islamic State and other terrorist organizations also have participated in the aggressive actions, which Azerbaijan has unleashed against Nagorno-Karabakh,” Babayan noted. “This is evidenced in numerous circumstances. They were talking with each other in Turkish and Arabic, they had other uniforms, [and] they were acting like militants. Their age was different, too; they all were over 30.”

In this connection, he recalled that a large number of Azerbaijani citizens have joined terrorist organizations, especially the Islamic State, and, moreover, most of them are military servicemen.

“By paving connections there, these so called military servicemen-militants have organized a terrorists’ flow from Turkey to Nakhichevan, and from there to Azerbaijan, to the conflict zone,” the NKR presidential spokesperson added.

«To MY Armenian brothers and sister soldiers who are fighting and defending a much bigger and better equipped forces of Azerbaijan who aggressively are trying to take what does NOT belong to them! But what the Azeri's don't understand is that this Armenian army has a huge heart and is defending our historic and ancestor's land in Karabakh! Along the entire length of the contact line of Nagorno Karabakh- Azerbaijani opposing forces, on April 1 and throughout the morning of April 2, the adversary undertook large-scale offensive military actions, during which the adversary shelled with missile-artillery units not only Armenian defense positions, but also civilian settlements.

The Azerbaijani armed forces fired MM-21 (Grad) multiple rocket launcher on April 2, at 08: 30 in the direction of Martuni (NKR), killing 12 year old Vaghinak Grigoryan and wounding two other children. 4 other civilians were wounded later. On April 3 the subversive group of Azerbaijan brutally killed 3 elderly and vandalized their corpses in Talish village.

Due to the timely and professional actions of the Nagorno Karabakh Defense Army, it was possible to take the situation under control, and make the enemy suffer considerable losses.

The Defense Army undertook counteroffensive measures and dominated the strategic position in the direction of Talish, which was earlier occupied by Azerbaijani forces.

Adversary’s losses by April 4: 29 tanks, 3 battle vehicles, 1 military/engineering hardware, 2 helicopters, 6 UAVs, 1 MM-21 artillery system, more than 300 casualties. Number of wounded has yet to be clarified.

Nagorno Karabakh losses: 7 tanks, 20 casualties, 6 of whom officers and non-commissioned officers, 72 wounded, 8 of whom officers and non-commissioned officers. 4 casualties among civilians, 1 of them a child. 5 more people who were on their way to Martakert were killed as a result of bombing the bus on April 4.

Views from Yerevan: Sooner or later Moscow will have to make a choice between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Sooner or later Moscow will have to make a choice between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Sergey Minasyan, Head of the Political Studies Department of the Caucasus Institute, has told ArmInfo.

"Moscow is trying to maintain the balance, at the same time influencing the conflicting parties through diplomacy," Minasyan says, noting that Moscow's aspiration to retain both Yerevan and Baku in its influence orbit may have absolutely opposite results," he says.

Minasyan stresses that such state of affairs is mostly the consequence of Moscow's sale of Solntsepyok and Smerch offensive systems to Azerbaijan. Now Baku actively uses these weapons in its undeclared war against Artsakh.

In this light, the expert expects Moscow to actively get involved in the processes around Karabakh, especially as Russians have bilateral and multilateral obligations to Armenia.

Syrian-Armenian doctor attends injured in Martakert

Young Syrian-Armenian doctor, Garnik Jozikyan has worked at Gandzasar Monastery hospital for three years. With the recent development, he hurried to Martakert from Yerevan to support his colleagues and attend to the injured, reports Arevelk.am.

In his interview with Arevelk.am, Garnik Jozikyan said that at the moment the situation on the Line of Contact between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan remains the same. Martakert hospital operates efficiently providing the necessary treatments to the injured. Those in serious conditions have been transferred to Stepanakert.

Jozikyan said that they are in touch with Stepanakert. They carry out excellent organizational work.
“Medication is sufficient, there is all the necessary equipment, there are all the possibilities to attend to the patients, yet it would be better if more professionals were here. Their presence wouldn’t hurt,” said Garnik Jozikyan, adding that he is admired for the spirits of both soldiers and Artsakh people.

“Soldiers are even ready to return to the first line as soon as they recover,” said the doctor.
He then added that there is spiritual and volunteer willingness in Stepanakert too.

Dvornikov: Armenia now has right to ask military support from CSTO

YEREVAN, April 5. /ARKA/. Azerbaijani troops’ assault on Armenia gives a full right to Yerevan to ask military support from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Denis Dvornikov, a columnist and a member of the Russian Association of International Law, says on his Facebook page.

 

“Before today Azerbaijan conducted a military campaign against one state – Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (or the Republic of Artsakh), and just now another Armenian state – the Republic of Armenia – came under Azerbaijani fire,” he says.

 

Dvornikov stressed that Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is an independent entity in this international situation. “Even Azerbaijan itself admitted that when signed a ceasefire agreement [in 1994 - ARKA],” he said.

 

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict broke out in 1998 February when the Nagorno-Karabakh autonomous region announced its secession from Azerbaijan. In September 1991, the region declared itself the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and, over the course of the enduring conflict, Azerbaijan subsequently lost control of the region.

 

In 1994, a Russia-brokered cease-fire was signed and peace talks have been held since, mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group.

 

On April 2 Azerbaijan resorted to an "unprecedented provocation along the entire perimeter of the contact line" with Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the NKR Defense Army, during the three-day fighting they have destroyed 2 helicopters, 29 tanks, one missile system Grad, heavy flame-throwing systems TOS-1, 6 armored vehicles, including 1 infantry fighting vehicle, 1 unit of engineering machinery and 6 Azerbaijani drones killing also over 300 Azeri soldiers.

 

The Armenian side lost 7 tanks, 20 servicemen were killed, and 72 wounded. Four civilians, including one child, were killed as well. Armenians also have 26 missing people. ---0---

French legislators support Nagorno-Karabakh people

Kaltenbach expressed his support and solidarity to the people of
Nagorno Karabakh and all Armenians, and is concerned about the
situation. As “Armenpress” reports, Senator mentioned that previous
events showed all risks of military situation tension. “It is already
more than a year that ceasefire violations are frequently taking place
which led to losses of nearly 30 lives throughout 2015”, Kaltenbach
said. According to him, France as a Minsk group co-chair country
together with Russia and the U.S is largely involved in the peace
process.

“Besides, I demand to create a UN mechanism to investigate ceasefire
violations”, French Senator said.

Member of National Assembly of France Henri Gebrayel also expressed
his support for Nagorno Karabakh people urging Azerbaijan to cease
shooting.

Pride Amid Grief: Armenians bid farewell to fallen heroes of Karabakh battles

As the bodies of Armenian soldiers killed in the latest hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh are being committed to the ground many describe their heroic deaths as the continuation of the heroism of their fathers and grandfathers, who proved to the world 20 years ago, in the war for Artsakh’s liberation, that the heart and spirit of Armenians are unconquerable.

The deeds of heroes of our time have admittedly amazed the entire society during the past few days. Memorial services and funeral ceremonies for perished soldiers are carried out in towns and villages across Armenia.

Artsrun Hovhannisyan, a spokesperson for the defense minister, below a comment “We feel sad but also proud” on his Facebook account regularly publishes the names of heroes fallen during the latest battles.

“Armenak Urfanyan, the 26-year-old captain of the 4th artillery company, with his subordinates, entered into a long combat with the enemy. Under pressure of the prevailing number of the enemy soldiers the officer sent his subordinates back and continued the fight alone eliminating one enemy tank and about a dozen soldiers. In the end, throwing several grenades at the enemy not letting Azeri soldiers approach him, Urfanyan used his last hand-grenade to blow himself and the adversaries who had approached him. Glory to our heroes,” wrote Hovhannisyan.

Meruzhan Stepanyan, a 23-year-old senior lieutenant from Gyumri, perished defending the homeland in the northeastern Karabakh village of Talish. He was transported in critical condition to the Central Clinical Military Hospital in Yerevan, where he died.

Hovik Mailyan, a 38-year-old tank man from the city of Hadrut, in Nagorno-Karabakh, was a father of three children. Kyaram Sloyan, a 20-year-old ethnic Yezidi machine gunner, was from village of Artashavan in the Aragatsotn province of Armenia; 27-year-old Junior Sergeant Vrezh Sargsyan was from the Pokr Masrik village, in the Gegharkunik province; 31-year-old soldier Harutyun Abrahamyan was from the Areguni village of the same province; 31-year-old major Hayk Torosyan was a chief of a rocket artillery unit; 23-year-old junior sergeant Ruben Iskandaryan was from Yerevan. Yuri Paramazyan, a 53-year-old commander sergeant, was from the Martuni province. Nodarik Margaryan, a deliverer-driver at the material security company, was a father of four children from the Martuni province. Sasun Mkrtchyan, was a 27-year-old machine-gunner from Yerevan.

Users of social networks write: “We feel sorrow, and express our gratitude to heroes”. They call for everything to be done for their families, and to stand for their children.

Aram Manukyan, the secretary of the opposition Armenian National Congress parliamentary faction said: “The grief of parents and relatives of those killed in Artsakh are inconsolable and boundless.”

“I want to express our condolences to the parents and relatives of our heroes. They need our help. The victims are our heroes.

They have defended our independence. Let them [parents and relatives], while feeling grief, also be filled with pride, as every holy martyr is a pride of the nation,” Manukyan said.

During these days videos have been disseminated on social media showing Armenian soldiers in combat operations in the frontlines. Conscript Narek Malkhasyan, who is now in hospital after receiving an injury, managed to shoot down a helicopter with a grenade-launcher, which military experts say is an exceptional feat.

“I heard the helicopter’s sound and rushed to take the weapon, it was at a distance of 40-50 meters from the position. Then I immediately shot,” the young man told media.

Samvel Ordubekyan, a father of seven who left for the frontlines to help regular troops, said on Artsakh Public TV that he came to Karabakh to stand next to his son as well as all other children there.

“I am just back from the post, all guys there are lions, they have a high fighting spirit and morale,” Ordubekyan said.

azerbaijan and its breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh said they had halted hostilities on Tuesday after four days of intense fighting that had prompted fears of all-out war.

Reuters was not able independently to verify whether the fighting - a resurgence of a decades-old conflict over the status of the region - had, in fact, stopped.

But an official in the breakaway region's Armenian-backed administration said the ceasefire was being observed. "Along the entire line of the front there is a relative lull," the official, Davit Babayan, told Reuters.

Azerbaijan's defense ministry issued a statement saying: "On April 5 at 12:00 (0800 GMT), on the basis of a mutual agreement, military actions on the contact line between the armed forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan are halted."

An official with the Armenian-backed armed forces of Nagorno-Karabakh told Reuters: "We've been ordered to halt fire."

As late as Tuesday morning, before the ceasefire was announced, both sides had been reporting fresh clashes.

RISK OF ESCALATION

An all-out war over Nagorno-Karabakh could drag in the big regional powers, Russia and Turkey. Moscow has a defense alliance with Armenia, while Ankara backs its ethnic Turkic kin in Azerbaijan.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Tuesday condemned what he said were Armenian attacks, and said Turkey would stand by Azerbaijan. Earlier, Russia's foreign minister had said Ankara's support for Baku was one-sided.

Nagorno-Karabakh is an enclave with a large ethnic Armenian population that lies inside the territory of Azerbaijan. The violence was a re-awakening of a long-festering ethnic conflict between the mainly Muslim Azeris and their Christian Armenian neighbors.

Envoys from Russia, France and the United States - who make up a body called the Minsk Group that mediates in the conflict - were planning to head to the region, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said in Paris.

"We can see that military conflict cannot be the solution," Ayrault told reporters after talks with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Even if the ceasefire holds in the short-term, there is still potential for the fighting to flare again.

Anger and frustration are building in Azerbaijan that years of talks have failed to bring Nagorno-Karabakh under its control. The country has used revenues from exports of crude oil to build up its military, leading some Azeris to believe that if there was another war, they could win it.

Azerbaijan said its troops had seized small pockets of territory in the latest fighting, and were fortifying those locations to make sure that it held on to its gains.

Demise of diplomacy

The launch of the Azerbaijani military offensive in the pre-dawn hours of April 2 means that the president's decision to proceed was made either in Washington or on the flight back to Baku.

That timing only suggests that the Washington visit was in many ways a last chance, or an ultimatum, by the Azerbaijani leader to the US to move more forcefully on the Karabakh conflict.

nd perhaps, although it was not clear to the Americans at the time, the Azerbaijanis' sense of frustration over the lack of progress in the peace process may have reached a dangerous tipping point.

Such frustration and willingness to use force to change the calculus over Karabakh has also been mounting, and was evident in the deeper trend of escalation over the past several years.

But it may also hold much wider, more dangerous implications. It may actually present a fresh opportunity for Russian involvement. Although Russia is more directly engaged in Armenia, who hosts the sole Russian base in the region, Moscow has emerged in recent years as Azerbaijan's main weapons provider.

Fragile ceasefire agreement

And as this recent surge in hostilities has intensified, the inherently fragile ceasefire agreement, first brokered in May 1994, is now dubious at best. Even the announcement of a "truce" by Azerbaijan late in the fighting on April 3 was not followed on the ground.

Azerbaijani artillery units remained engaged and even expanded their firing, expanding a new front. This only reaffirmed the challenge of returning to a seeming sense of normality in abiding by the terms of the ceasefire.

For Moscow, however, which has long relied on the Karabakh conflict as an instrument for power and influence, the fragility of the ceasefire may become the key re-entry point. Moscow may now argue that the collapsing ceasefire may be only be remedied by a deployment of Russian peacekeepers

Such a scenario is clearly a threat to all parties in the Karabakh conflict and may add a new, ever more destructive element to the difficult and challenging equation of resolving this conflict.

It may also mean that no matter what the outcome of military operations on the ground will be, the death of diplomacy may also become the demise of the West as Russia returns as the ultimate determinant of security and stability. And that is a strategic threat ironically shared by Armenia, Azerbaijani and Nagorno-Karabakh itself.

1994 թ. մայիսի 12-ին հայկական բանակի հաղթական ընթացքը կասեցվեց և առանց Ադրբեջանին կապիտուլյացիայի ենթարկելու նրա հետ կնքվեց հրադադար:

Հայկական կողմի նման անհեռատես քաղաքականության շնորհիվ Ադրբեջանը անցնող տարիների ընթացքում կուտակեց տնտեսական և ռազմական մեծ ներուժ, որի միջոցով մեր դեմ վարում է հետզհետե ուժգնացող հյուծիչ պատերազմ՝ նպատակ ունենալով գրավել Արցախը և ոչնչացնել հայկական գործոնը:

Այս օրերին մեր դեմ Ադրբեջանի ձեռնարկած աննախադեպ հարձակումների հերթական ալիքն է, որին հաջորդելու են այլ նորանոր ալիքներ:

Ինչպես առաջին Արցախյան պատերազմի, այնպես էլ հրադադարի և այս վերջին օրերի մեր թանկ զոհաբերությունը իմաստ կունենա, եթե հատուցվի թշնամու պարտությամբ և Հայրենիքի ազատագրմամբ:

Military Expert: Azerbaijan’s wasting its armaments and manpower

 

Military experts in Armenia believe that Azerbaijan’s application of heavy weapons against the Defense Army and civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh is a sign of its weakness rather than strength.

In recent days reports from the frontline suggest that Azerbaijan has been using its most deadly force, including TOS-1A heavy flame throwers and Smerch heavy multiple rocket launchers, in shelling Armenian military positions as well as areas populated by civilians.

According to Armenian authorities, there has been little damage from the use of these weapons due to “poor professionalism” of the Azerbaijani military.

Military expert Karen Vrtanesyan, meanwhile, describes it as a “desperate step” on the part of Azerbaijan that has failed to gain any significant ground in its latest military operations against Nagorno-Karabakh.

“At the moment I qualify it as a desperate step because they are using heavy weapons for a small tactical achievement. In other words, they won’t gain anything big, but they are trying to use everything they have,” Vrtanesyan told ArmeniaNow.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Monday also implied that Azerbaijan has been paying a high price for its insignificant advancement in Nagorno-Karabakh that still did not provide it with high ground.

Military authorities in Yerevan and Stepanakert estimate that Azerbaijan has lost more than 300 troops as well as a considerable amount of tanks, artillery, aircraft and other pieces of military hardware since the outbreak of fighting on April 2. As of late Monday, the Karabakh authorities acknowledged the deaths of 20 soldiers, saying that 72 were wounded and 26 were missing in action.

In Vrtanesyan’s opinion, in the current clashes the Azerbaijani side is wasting not only its weapons and armor, but also its human resources. “This way, the Azerbaijani side is wasting its resources, and their financial losses in this connection are also considerable. The matter concerns the loss of commandos whose training is very costly. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not millions,” he said.

The expert considers that in the meantime the Armenian side manages to give an adequate response. “We don’t have all of those types of weapons in Karabakh, but the weapons that are available there are used with maximum effect,” Vrtanesyan concluded.

Press secretary of Defense Ministry published the names of soldiers killed during the military operations.

Kyaram Sloyan, 1996, was among the victims. The latter’s photos were earlier published by Azerbaijani media. In particular a photograph of an Azerbaijani soldier holding Syloyan’s severed head was disseminated.

Journalists have spoken to Sloyan’s father, Khalal Sloyan, who said that he wasn't broken.

“I will again send my children to the army, I myself will go with them. Six people have already gone there, I was going too, but … I’m waiting for my son’s corpse. I just have one request, please bring my son’s body,” Khalal said.

Sloyan’s uncle said he would take the Kyaram’s revenge on barbarian Azerbaijani soldiers.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Azerbaijani authorities have brought themselves to a dead end thanks to their own policy, theArtsakh President's spokesman said, according to Panorama.am.

“Their military operation failed; I mean taking those 200-300 meters with such terrible losses doesn’t solve anything,”Davit Babayan said.

“On the other hand, halting military actions would mean they have made a moral and political mistake and will have to bear the consequences.”

According to him, Azerbaijan hasn’t made the decision to attack by itself.

“Turkey is the only country in the world to unconditionally support Azerbaijan in the most divers issues,” Babayan said.

In response to a question on whether Karabakh will turn to Russia for assistance in the event of resumption of hostilities, the spokesman said: “We are our only hope. I believe we are capable of resolving the issue with Azerbaijan by ourselves, just like we did in 1991-1994.”

The parties to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict agreed on a bilateral ceasefire along the contact line which came into force at 12:00 midday, April 5.

Prior to that, on the night of April 1-2, Azerbaijani armed forces initiated overt offensive operations in the southern, southeastern and northeastern directions of the line of contact with Nagorno Karabakh.

As many as 20 Karabakh servicemen were killed and 72 were wounded in the course of military operations. In addition, 4 civilians and 5 volunteers have been killed.

26 Karabakh soldiers have gone missing so far.

As of April 5, the Azerbaijani side has lost 29 tanks and over 5 armored vehicles, including an IFV, as well as 1 TOS-1A Solntsepyok multiple rocket launcher, 1 BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher, 2 military helicopters and 7 unmanned aerial vehicles.

Seven Karabakh tanks have been neutralized since April 2.
