Reminds me of the time when my cousine invited me to go with her on a “pilgrimage” from Adana to Ani, and to this day she does not understand why I declined. To me, a pilgrimage begins in (note the A to Z) Ani and ends in Zeitun.

She sent me video of her trek which I still have.

My cousine’s mother was an orphan from one of the princely houses of Zeitun. She made a point to search and find her mother’s house, which, of course, was not there anymore. The video shows a gaggle of very Bosnian looking women in charshafs in the background. Zeitun was rein habited by Bosnian Turks *whatevr the f*** that means.. My cousine, who speaks Turkish as well asked them what had happened here. No one answers except this very Bosnian looking, blond boy of ten pipes in; “Burda savash oldu, Turkler ve Gavurlar. Turkler gazandi, ve Gavurlarin anasini sikti, bu daghdan ahaghi atdi”. (There wa a war here, Turks against Gavurs. Turks won, and we f***d the Gavurs’ mothers, we threw them down this mountain). Of course. When I told this story some time ago, Ali Suat responded that in the interior there still are “ignorant Turks“. But, who taught that ten year old the kind of “history”?

I wonder where Ankara hopes to recoup the cost of "renovation/rebastardization" but from those dissporan idiots whos only heritage is based on the CROSS."

And if you think I am so idiotic( shut up Hagarag!)that I am going to waste my hard earned dollars to fatten the treausry at Ankara? You ain't seen a more moronic idiot yet.

I'm with you on this one. all my cousins, both on my father's and mothers' side, who have visited Armenian sites within the Turkish state have encouraged me to go to these sites.

 

I have stood at the shores of Rhodes looking toward Turkey. I have been at the Armenian border looking at Mt. Ararat and the ruins of Ani, but I have NEVER entered the Turkish state. These foolish Armenians will now flock to Lake Van to bring their Western Dollars, Francs, etc. to the Turkish economy. Why should I support a nation that took my father from being a student at a private prep-school in Germany (heir to a massive fortune) to an orphaned hammal in Berlin and then Paris (his mother lived through the ordeal, but was permanently mentally incapacitated).

I single-handedly flushed out Peck's Armenian heritage that was divulged to me by his relative after I got her drunk at an exclusive restaurant. Then my overseas cousins verified this. I could never give real names in my book. It would destroy lives.

 

Then I have contacts in the industry, so hopefully it wil be made into a movie. So many twists that it will keep the viewers glued to their seats.

Older version of Hagarag would be Dick Gautier who resembles Hagarag. Younger version could be the guy that Egoyan had playing the antagonist in "Ararat." Perhaps some other young actor, Armenian from Giligia background or Stamos perhaps.

MESROB MUTAFYAN DEMANDS TO PLACE A CROSS ATOP HOLY CROSS CHURCH IN AKHTAMAR

Constantinople Patriarch of the Armenian Apostolic Church Mesrob Mutafyan turned to the Turkish government demanding to return the cross to its original place on the renovated Holy Cross Church on Akhtamar island. Turkish Daily News reports that Patriarch’s letter was sent to the Turkish MFA three days ago. Patriarch Mutafyan in his letter also says that the church must function not as a museum, but as a working temple. Nevertheless, the priest; stated that he is happy for the opening of Holy Cross. “I congratulate everyone who realized this project,” the Turkish newspaper reports. Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Levent Bilman confirmed the request in his weekly press conference, and said the ministry will report its view to the Ministry of Culture, but it would take some time. The newspaper reminds that Armenian Deputy Culture Minister Gagik Gyurjian will represent his country in today's inauguration, who is leading to an Armenian delegation composed of experts, architects. The publication underlines that the Armenian delegation made the entry to Turkey from Georgia since the border between Turkey and Armenia has been closed since 1993. “However, having been under strong pressure because of a resolution proposed to the U.S. House of Representatives that calls on the United States to accept that a genocide occurred during World War I, Turkey is aiming to gain the sympathy of Armenians using the opening ceremony of Akhtamar,” Turkish Daily News underscores. In its part Zaman newspaper notes along with his letter Patriarch Mesrob has sent old photographs of the Holy Cross Church, where clearly is visible the metal cross atop the dome of the church. Levent Bilman said this issue will be thoroughly examined.

The church had long been neglected

Turkey has renovated a 1,100-year-old church in the east of the country, in what is seen as a gesture to improve ties with neighbouring Armenia.

 

The ceremony on Akdamar island on Lake Van was attended by senior Armenian officials, despite the two countries' lack of diplomatic ties.

 

The mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 left profound scars and bitterness.

 

About 70,000 Armenians live in Turkey today. The church will now be a museum.

 

Plea for worship

 

Patriarch Mesrob II, spiritual leader of Turkey's tiny Armenian Orthodox community, told several hundred people at the ceremony that the government should open up the restored church for worship at least once a year.

He said the move would help reconciliation between Turks and Armenians.

 

"If our government approves, it will contribute to peace between two communities who have not been able to come together for years," he said.

But the head of Armenia's Apostolic Church, Garegin II, declined Ankara's invitation to attend the ceremony because the church will no longer function as a place of worship.

 

So far Turkey has ignored calls to place a cross on the conical roof.

 

Future projects

 

The Church of Surp Khach - or Holy Cross - is one of the finest surviving monuments of Armenian culture in the region. Its location is called Akhtamar in Armenian.

It had long been left empty and neglected, its intricate wall carvings depicting biblical scenes crumbling.

 

The Turkish government spent $1.5m (£763,000) on its restoration, which took 18 months to complete.

 

The 20-strong Armenian delegation of architects, engineers and archaeologists attending the ceremony was headed by Deputy Culture Minister Gagik Gyurjyan.

 

Mr Gyurjyan said they were not in Turkey just to witness the renovation of the church, which was built between 915-921.

 

"We think we can discuss new projects regarding the future," he said, according to Turkey's Anatolia news agency.

 

"Our experts can co-operate in many areas including archaeology, architecture and industry."

 

Border closed

 

But relations between the two countries remain tense.

 

Turkey closed its border with Armenia in the 1990s to support Azerbaijan in its dispute with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh. To get to Akdamar, Armenian officials had to travel via Istanbul or Georgia.

 

Armenians say 1.5 million of their people were killed in a genocide by Ottoman Turks during World War I, either through systematic massacres or through starvation.

 

More than a dozen countries, various international bodies and many Western historians agree that it was genocide.

 

Turkey says there was no genocide. It acknowledges that many Armenians died, but says the figure was below one million.

 

Police reportedly detained five trade unionists who staged a demonstration on a jetty on Lake Van to protest against the church's restoration.

 

The protesters carried Turkish flags, pictures of modern Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and a banner reading: "The

Turkish people are noble. They would never commit genocide", Anatolia news agency said.
