Anileve
Recently I’ve been living in the era of old music. I’ve remembered my fascination with Queen and have been listening to them continuously, just can't get enough. Jazz has been my most prominent choice of music as well as the Latin genre. Juanes, Cesaria Evora, Marisa Monte and Tribalistas, Café Tacuba, Bacilos, Mana, Aterciopelados, Buena Vista and Gilberto just to name a few. There is just something in Latin Rock that doesn’t really exist in any other form of music. When I was in Mexico at a club (where I got my belly button pierced, I was drunk and felt practically no pain, and I got it for free with no infection. One of my treasured memories.) they had a live rock band, the guys were absolutely amazing. But most of all the energy was unforgettable, I have never felt anything like that, it was vibrating through the walls of the club. American/English music includes: Jeff Buckley, Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey, Floyd, Grateful Dead, Beatles, The Doors, Queen, Chillout, some house and D&B (occasionally), tons of Jazz and Blues, Sting, Prince and for a bit of mainstream Chili Peppers. And more recently I discovered King Crimson, I receive immense pleasure from listening to them. So mostly it’s old stuff. What’s my problem? I am sure there is awesome contemporary music, but I can’t seem to find anything I like. Any suggestions?

Anileve
clearly bike was not my choice of transportation... style_images/master/snapback.png Clearly you don't understand the simple pleasures of life, as well as the message of the "irritating" song. Harut
but i couldn't understand the message of the irritating song because i didn't speak english... so it was irritating...
Anileve
Well in that case what do you consider "non-irritating" music which marks the era of 60's-90's? At least you were listening to perfection, whether you think it's annoying or not, there is hope that you may develop good taste at some point. nairi
I never liked Queen, maybe because I just don't understand their music... As for contemporary music, I'm sure you can find good stuff if you look hard enough.
Anileve
Eeegh, these youngins lack appreciation of finer things.... Nairi that was a very profound advice, very philosophical....If you look you shall find.
Arvestaked
The only contemporary music I really like is the music made by those who have been doing it for a while.

vava
Recently I’ve been living in the era of old music. ..... I think I'm always living in that era of 'old' music. Most of my favourite bands and artists are definitely not from today's clublists! I think there's a difference today, from the industry reality pre-MTV. Today's music is sold by the video - by the lifestyle. 'Older' music didn't have that kind of elaborate marketing ruse - it was sold for the music. The music distribution channels have all changed, and these new constraints impact musical production. I'm not saying that today's music is not good - but much of it is mass produced and inevitably ends up sounding formulaic. When I was in Mexico at a club ...they had a live rock band, the guys were absolutely amazing. Harut
ok, the bicycle i'm talking about was not sung by Queen but by some silly faced blond chick on a pink backgroud, and it was a techno remix...
Anoushik
I think I'm always living in that era of 'old' music. I'm not saying that today's music is not good - but much of it is mass produced and inevitably ends up sounding formulaic. style_images/master/snapback.png Very true. I think today's music is written to fit the video, to follow the story, the message of the mini story the video provides. When I used to watch MTV I'd notice that I was so used to the videos that I was unable to just listen to the music in my car or without the TV. Even if I tried to listen to the song I'd still imagine or try to remember the video story in my mind. This is just another form of musical experience I guess. Something similar is happening with the contemporary Classical music, where composers write music that's intended not only for listening but listening with images provided in the background. ... I also love "older" music thanks to my mom. She found her favorite radio channel for listening while driving: 570AM KLAC (I think they're going to change to another channel) I don't listen to it all the time but sometimes I get in the mood to tune in and see what's on. That's how I was introduced to Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole (a great, great singer), Dinah Washington. They also play Astrud Gilberto, Frank Sinatra (not my favorite), and of course, Louis Armstrong. Beatles ...The Doors ...Queen so so King Crimson, I receive immense pleasure from listening to them This is an excellent band who have some deep and melodic music, I also discovered it recently (about 5 years ago), along with Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP). shiner
The other day I was drunk at a bar and they played Queen on their system. I remembered how much I used to listen to Queen, and then I went on telling this guy next to me how it kind of upset me that their greatest hits album does not have one of their main songs, etc. and a whole bunch of other drunk talk. For the past few days I've been playing that album but it skips hard core. In a way it's annoying but I guess I'm used to it. Funny coincidence. Nané
Eh ... the good old days. Why couldn't we have been born back then?
Arvestaked
King Crimson, ELP, Alan Parson's! Wow! We have some proggers in here! How nice! Since we do have prog rock fans, I will make additional recommendations: National Health, Gong (or Planet Gong), Hatfield and the North, Brand X, Jethro Tull... I suppose I can make this list real long but I will stop with those. Anileve: I did not know you liked King Crimson. They are my favorite rock band of all time. I have about 25 of their releases and I see them or any of the members live when I can.
Arvestaked
Only cause they got over played! style_images/master/snapback.png I wish I agreed. I really believe the music is bad. For example, "We Will Rock You" is a sloppy composition. But it has cool lyrics in the verses, I will give them that.
sev-mard
Eh ... the good old days. Why couldn't we have been born back then? style_images/master/snapback.png If we were I'm sure we'd be saying the same things about the music from "that" time. I believe that somethings will stand the tests of time, but overall people from different genres and periods of existence will have the same conversations over and over again, and long for things that they were not a part of.
