They may not find Music for their taste, but there's still a lot of respectable Music being recorded! I think today's music is written to fit the video, to follow the story, the message of the mini story the video provides. When I used to watch MTV I'd notice that I was so used to the videos that I was unable to just listen to the music in my car or without the TV. Even if I tried to listen to the song I'd still imagine or try to remember the video story in my mind. This is just another form of musical experience I guess. Something similar is happening with the contemporary Classical music, where composers write music that's intended not only for listening but listening with images provided in the background. style_images/master/snapback.png First of all, not all contemporary Music is "written for the video." There are Indie labels and artists! Second of all, we may have the impression that they are "written for the video," simply because we discover them is that format and we get conditioned and accustomed! Most of all, should that mean that it is void of musical value? Eh ... the good old days. Why couldn't we have been born back then? style_images/master/snapback.png Let's not forget that we only remember the distilled best of a another era: what was of real value! I believe that there exists as much good Music today as 20, 30 or 40 years ago. I believe that there existed as much bad music 20, 30 or 40 years ago than today! Most of my favourite bands and artists are definitely not from today's clublists! I think there's a difference today, from the industry reality pre-MTV. Today's music is sold by the video - by the lifestyle. 'Older' music didn't have that kind of elaborate marketing ruse - it was sold for the music. The music distribution channels have all changed, and these new constraints impact musical production. I'm not saying that today's music is not good - but much of it is mass produced and inevitably ends up sounding formulaic. As strange as it sounds, artists back then were somewhat against a certain image, now everyone in every genre is about an image. I am glad it's past me, the stories on their own are horrifying, I think I would end up being one angry radical activist. However, there certainly was more soul. If we were I'm sure we'd be saying the same things about the music from "that" time. I believe that somethings will stand the tests of time, but overall people from different genres and periods of existence will have the same conversations over and over again, and long for things that they were not a part of. style_images/master/snapback.png I don't think so. Dylan's music stretched across the borders, it was raw and ravaging. People were slowly digressing from the happy go lucky music of their parents. I believe that you listen to relatively conventional music and there is nothing "good" or "bad" in that! Also, the "musical map" that you have drawn is missing many important "territories!" Of course, I would also consider any other definition: it's nothing but a definition! Second of all, the purpose was not to suggest "innovative" music. Also, what is "innovative?" Aaliyah is considered to be the most innovative in that list - it is obvious and I agree - but your reaction was "so so!" In any case, as I have explained in my previous message, the goal was to present relatively mainstream and within the neighborhood of more the "musical map" you have drawn! I did not see why I would list musicians and styles that are too remote from your map, such as alternative and Indie! What would have been the point? The sounds send you into a tropical heat and make your heart skip a beat. The album is a potpourri of drums, piano, soft background vocals and a spritz of smooth jazz. You are instantly transported to the streets of Cuba in the 50's with old Chevys parked outside of cafes where old men drink beer and perform their favorite Latin tunes.
