I don't know the details of the wiki search engine but from what I have gathered about the "model", I think it will be a great complement to google-like search engines. One of the recent search engine "complications" has been the exponential growth of all these "blogs" .... everyone and their mother now has a blog spewing all sorts of opinion on to the web ... some great, some not so great, and mostly all "opinion" rather than "fact". I think it would be reasonable to expect the Googles evolving into the direction of finding facts, organizing real information, and filtering junk, spam, and crap. On the other hand, I think there will be a need for searching "the popular" things where wiki-like (user contributed, maintained, and filtered) models will thrive. Of course this is all very high level speculation and there is a lot of factors that will drive how search engines develop. But now ask yourself ... when you search for something, do you want to find real facts and info, the blog someone wrote 1 year ago, the blog someone wrote about 10 minutes ago, or a clever combination of all?

If your employer pays for it, go do it. Most of the time you won't even be called into court. If your employer doesn't pay for it, you can claim it causes financial hardship and that works most of the time. I haven't been in CA last 4 years so I don't know if the rules have changed ... when I was in school, I never went since I would always call and postpone and then during the breaks I would claim financial hardship since I was usually working part time and my employer wouldn't pay

vay vay the List hahaha ... Movses lriv moratsel ei ed porn hyeforume I remember why I joined the forum ... there was a long discussion about bread in the religion section. That is just something I couldn't stay out of! Thoth was the first to welcome me and I have to say I miss him around here even though a lot of weird things did happen throughout the years. Another name we should not forget is Nairi ... not many people know (some of us mods know) ... she put a lot of time and effort into the place and really cleaned up many things. Fortunately she is still around at times.

Some of my best memories from last few years are from here ... and I definitely value a lot of friendships I have formed here. Unfortunately I have not had much foruming time in the last year or so but that might change in the future so I always try to at least step in and take a peek even if I don't have time to keep up with everything like I used to. I'll try to dig up all the old Harut pics!

Nor H. .. if you want to know the perhaps "best" way to enter the data, I would say is to use a real database. Something like Microsoft Access would do the job ... there is also OpenOffice which has both an excel alternative and a database program (basically it's a lot like Microsoft office) but it is free! But I am thinking database concepts and getting the people started to using it is going to be rather non trivial ... so I can always get periodic updates in excel form and keep adding them into one central database that then everyone can get a copy of if they want.
-
As long as each category of info is in a separate column in excel, the "program" boils down to a basic lookup that matches something from one column to another column with a fancy user interface ... in other words, something pretty easy to do. The final data will not be stored in excel form of course but converting from excel to something else is easy. I proposed excel because pretty much everyone will have it, it is fairly easy to use, the data will be organized into the groups we want, and typing in different fonts (i.e. armenian) is possible. By the way, have you seen this? I think the xls file I posted was from a very early version of this one .. I don't think it was for sale at the time but now it boasts 70,000 words. Wonder where those words came from and if they are licensed (doesn't mention anything about the origin as far as I could see).
-
Of course the other issue is licensing and copyright ... I don't think simply copying things out of a published dictionary and throwing it out in the public is a good idea ... for one thing, it is not legal.
-
It's funny this usually tends to happen whenever someone shows up and continues repeating "everyone is stupid but me ... everyone is stupid but me ... everyone is stupid but me ..." (note, this is actually a Homer Simpson quote).
-
If not ms word, I can certainly try to contact a few people to get this incorporated maybe into google spell check ... so when you do a google search in Armenian, it suggests correct spelling. But let's think basics before jumping too far ahead! Most "good" dictionaries provide the following set of core features: 1. Definition 2. Pronunciation (some audio content would be excellent!) 3. Variations (plural, different tenses for verbs, common prefixes and suffixes, etc) 4. Synonyms 5. Antonyms 6. Grammar and usage info (is it a verb, adjective, etc) 7. Roots and etymology As far as the programmer is concerned, as long as this data is available, the interface can be made as fancy as you want and integrated in as many places and in as many ways as you can imagine. Having it on cel phones, online, inside word processing applications, toolbar addons, different operating systems, etc etc ... The main challenge and the main focus as I see it right now is to get the data organized and the data gathering, checking, and validation under way.
-
By the way, as an example and to get things started, take a look at this file: Armenian Dictionary (xls file) Note: 1.8 MB It's a MS Excel file. Just for my own entertainment, a few years ago I took one of the online Armenian dictionaries (can't remember where I got it but it was really nice), and converted it's data to this xls format so I could use my own program to look things up in it. Edit: By the way, in order to see the Armenian in the file above, you need the ArialAM Font (click).

I am currently in Northern CA but occasionally visit so cal. As far as I am concerned, the hardest part is putting the data together. The program is actually fairly trivial to write The main technical question here is how the data will be collected and stored. Here are a few possiblities ... I can automate how the data is transformed from each of these into how it is actually stored in the dictionary program so no worries about that. As long as a uniform and regular formatting is followed throughout the data collection phase. 1. Text file The most trivial way to start collecting the data is a basic text file. The format should be uniform all the way through with one word per line. The problem with this format is writing "Armenian" is not trivial with most text editors. 2. Microsoft Word doc Almost everyone has access to this and there is no learning involved. Someone should start a template where everyone else will follow. 3. Microsoft excel I would actually prefer this method in terms of ease of use for non computery people who will be collecting the words and definitions. Basically first column can be the word and the second column the definition. Cool thing about this is that it is easy to enter Armenian in armenian fonts etc. 4. Some sort of custom program or web interface ... we could set up something custom for this. But I would say probably the best method is to start with something "simple" and not try to complicate things from the get-go. As the existing data starts growing and potentially team members increasing, we can come up with perhaps better ways to collect / verify the data. But basically, almost any "editable" form in which you can get me the data, I can probably make it work.
-
I can do the programming. I don't know what licensing and the legal restrictions would be on the data, but I would strongly suggest making the program open source and freely available to everyone (open source would mean anyone in the world could also contribute to the program itself). It might even be possible to set it up as an online service ... Mosjan has a number of sites one of which is http://armenian.name (a big database of Armenian names) for example and of course this site

I just reread the first post and realized you already have kuku on there .. sorry I was on a small portable with a bad connection at the time and didn't get to read the whole post. As far as "nshkhark or plav" ... we get the nshkhark from the church as technically it is somehow supposed to be blessed and holy to be equivalent to eating Jesus's body (don't ask me why we have this canibalistic ritual but that's how it is). "Plav" just refers to steamed white rice.
-
The Armenians from Iran definitely have a tradition of eating "kuku" on Xmas eve ... however note that for us this is on Jan 5th. Here is a recipe. Here is another one. Also, our family tends to eat a lot of salty fish (and now salmon) but that's about all the meat we get that night. Plain yoghurt is also a must!
