Clearly each will have their own unique skills and abilities ... for example one may be better in making decisions and the other good at managing things. I fully agree that having the mother around is very important for children especially at a young age. So when a couple have children they MUST consider this and the woman especially must try to meet the needs of the children as much as possible. However, I don't think predefining the roles as you suggest is the best way all the time. If both partners agree to the roles then things will work great but that will involve compromise on both sides ... with your method, it seems to me, that the compromises will generally be from the woman's side. I think that "compromise" should be equally split between the two partners (although I admit that that is a very difficult thing to do in general).

That may have worked in the Dark Ages but not in the 21-st century. I consider myself very privileged to have been raised in a family where both my parents were very successful in their careers ... my dad was a university professor and my mom was an eye surgeon in Iran. They had PLENTY of time for us kids (3 brothers) even with their very busy schedules and they always put us first. That's why they gave EVERYTHING up and moved to the US to start fresh. My Dad hasn't had a real job since we left Iran about 12 years ago (he teaches part time at Universities) and my mom never had the time or the energy to go relearn everything and become a certified doctor in the US. So she started teaching contact lenses at a college now. I will never be able to repay them for their huge sacrifice but I think they have managed to do a great job even though they both had very full professional lives. The key was they thought about the kids first and themselves second. That is the real key to raising childeren that will be valuable members of the society.

They tried to pass some laws against junk email (spam) in the US but it never worked. There are successful laws against telemarketers since it costs a lot to keep calling people ... but with email, it is soooo cheap that the senders don't care that 99.9% of their recipients couldn't care less about their ads. The other thing is that junk-emailers are not really established companies. That is why they are not really the most law abiding! (they don't have to). I have been thinking quite a bit about how to stop these bastards (pardon my Japanese) and the conclusion I have come to is that we should organize a global reply to spam day!!! Just imagine, if everyone who receives a message like that replies (by calling their tel number, sending mail to their address, etc), they would be completely crippled and would think twice before sending more junk email. I actually called one of these places once (their 800 number) and left messages saying "Sorry, I am not interested in your product" ... I left that message on about 10 or 12 different mail boxes (it was an 800 number). It probably didn't accomplish much but I feel much better ... actually, I have not received any more emails from them!

Thanks for the warm welcome Just to add to something I said above, I don't think we as humans can ever trully know the universe (like we know a computer). I think Heisenberg was first to say it somewhere in the late 1920s in his "uncertainty principle" that we can know the exact position or the momentum of a particle but not both at the same time. So even if we knew all the rules governing the universe, we could never predict exactly what is going to happen next since we can't ever know the current state of things exactly. That would make the universe extermeley complex from the human perspective (unlike the computer). Most of THOT's questions above can be answered by "conjecture" but that is all it is going to be! As far as evolution/mutation, we have already seen it (mutation more so than evolution) so that explains a lot of things about how we got here. Although it may not explain everything. Hmmm... isn't it interesting where a question about the origin of bread can lead to in the "Theology" thread

Do you use POP to get your mail (like Outlook, Eudora, Netscape Messenger, etc) or do you use a web-based interface (like Hotmail, yahoo)? With POP, you can set your own filters or use some special software but there is really no easy way to get rid of junk email. Easiest way would be to change your email address and don't give it to anyone other than the people you wish to receive emails from. However, the Universe is NOT as magical as it seems and it definitely is not "infinitely" complex (although it may be infinitely large according to all our practical scales). ... but then again, what do I know
