Many thanks in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------- Dear friends, http://www.ArmenianGenocidePosters.org I am inviting you to join our project and design a poster dedicated to the Armenian genocide. The purpose of this campaign is to promote Genocide recognition worldwide. Its a non-profit project, so the only reward for the job might be the publishing of the successful posters. In 2002 we published 5 posters (they were shown in Amsterdam, LA, Paris, NYC), in 2003 we had none published because we did not manage to locate the necessary funds for publishing and also did not have an active participation. Its up to you to change that picture. Surprisingly few designers of Armenian descent have made an effort to design a poster for this project. We have a new generation of people involved in graphic design (some of them frequently post on this and other forums), so I would very much like to see them take up the challenge and join our effort. Many many thanks for the positive reactions, friends. Ideas come from nowhere and I have enough motivation to keep coming up with this sort of stuff. Just the other day I was passing on a street in Tel Aviv and saw a huge billboard advertising Turkey. http://www.armeniangenocideposters.org/turkeybillboard.jpg Just that you know what the copy says- "Building on a paradise? Turkey- God's place on earth (not sure if that is the right translation from hebrew)" 2 weeks ago a record of flights from Israel to Turkey was broken- 25 (!) flights in one day from Israel to Turkey. 25! This is one cousy relationship, build on profit, purely profit.

Hello Azat, Vava and River, Thanks for the input, actually the exhibit can be anywhere in US or Canada. The problem is that I do not know people who can arrange a proper connection. Looking for an Art gallery online is easy, but the response is very low, its got to be someone who can recommend it. There is a huge potential here, as far as the art goes, and majority of the works which will be present will be available for sale. Yes, Arpa, indeed you are right. We should do our most to counter the propaganda of the "turkish delight". I hope it turns bitter for them and it will, as long as there are people who have the guts to fight back. Dear Arpa. I dont think we have to look for a proof that those carpets are Armenian. They are. One of the biggest experts on the Oriental carpets Volkmar Gantzhorn (who published a book called Oriental Carpets, TASCHEN, 1998) clearly states that the usage of "T"="S" in oriental carpets is an identifying mark for the christian Armenian carpets. He goes further by insisting that Armenian Plateau was the origin for virtually all the carpet making in Orient. He provides maps, traces and alalysis of the ornaments used in carpet waving. It would not be an exaggeration to say that 70% of that thick volume is dedicated to the Armenian carpets. The author illustrates his point by paintings as well but Holbein works are not mentioned in his book. I highly recommend this book, its widely available on the market. Unfortunately I dont have a scanner at the moment so I cannot scan the maps which show the migration of carpet waving from Armenia to the Orient, Middle Asia and Europe. Here is a paragraph from the foreword: " As cult objects of Christian oriental churches, these carpets, along with other textiles, constitute what may well be the most important Armenian contribution to the history of the world art. This book attempts to make good the injustice done to a people who, in the course of their more than two thousand year history, have suffered more than any other as a result of their geographic location butween the Orient and the Occident. The Armenians have countless times been divided, exploited, robbed, exiled, deported, enslaved, murdered and mistreated. They have been even robbed of their art, the autorship for which has been attributed to the conquerors during the years which followed, either due to an ignorance of the facts involved, or to the manipulation of these facts. Recently I have discovered for myself that Hans Holbein painted Armenian carpets in some of his famous works. For instance the famous painting of Ambassadors depicts the two French ambassadors to the English court, Jean de Dinteville (1504-1555) and Georges de Selve (1508/09-1541). Clearly the carpet in the painting is Armenian which is proven by Armenian "T" letter incorporated in the carpet design. Israel 2 - Armenia 0 but the boys gave a fight, it was a good game- they lost with honor fighting till the last minute.

Tomorrow Armenian national football team plays Israel in Tel Aviv. Revivo (who btw playes in a Turkish club) is quoted saying to Israeli TV - "we should be greatful to the Armenian side that they agreed to play this game in Israel and are here...". None of the European clubs have played any game in Israel concerned with security issues. Armenians are the rare exception. Good luck to us tomorrow.

Ruling against Hovanissian renews debate about Kocharyan's citizenship By Zhanna Alexanyan ArmeniaNow reporter When the Central Election Committee registered 11 Presidential candidates last Wednesday, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Raffi Hovannisian was not on the list. Last week a lower court ruled that Hovannisian has not held Armenian citizenship the required 10 years for eligibility to run for President. And, as expected, the court ruling has renewed a long-standing debate over whether President Robert Kocharyan, a citizen of Artsax, has legitimate claim to run the country. "My decision to be a citizen of Armenia and to live in my native country was significant for me, and for all my life" said Hovannisian, formerly a U.S. citizen who has claimed that he applied for citizenship in 1991 but that his application was left unanswered for years. "I believe and expect that the court of appeal will restore my rights and that, according to the law, the Central Election Committee (CEC) will register me as a candidate for the presidential post." The appeals court was to hear Hovannisian's case today (January 20) and a decision is imminent. "I with my associate will be participating in all political processes taking place in Armenia," he said in a press conference this week. After serving as Armenia's first Minister of Foreign Affairs, two years ago Hovannisian founded the Armenian Center for Strategic and National Research. In August 2001, Hovinassian gained Armenian citizenship, but has argued that his right to be a Presidential candidate should be based on his earlier application for citizenship. "We realized that we dealt with a power decision that had been developed in the pre-election staff of the President," Hovannisian said, adding that the judge and others involved in the decision against him were "toys" of the current administration. Prior to the lower court's ruling, the President's press secretary Vahe Gabrielyan had told the press that regardless of the court decision Hovannisian could not be a candidate because the verdict would not be in legal force until after January 20, the final day for registering candidates. "Concerning the statement made by the press secretary I can say that it is a result of a lack of knowledge concerning the law," said Vardan Poghosyan, Hovannisian's attorney, "and is the wish of President Robert Kocharyan to leave one of the best candidates out of the competition by all means." (Though January 17 is the last day for registration, any would-be candidate who is left off the list has three days to appeal the CEC decision.) The session of CEC concerning registration of the candidates took place earlier than was expected. Hovannisian's application was not approved on the basis that information from the passport office said he has been a citizen since August 2001. Seven members of the committee voted against registering Hovannisian. Two members of the committee, who voted for registering Hovannisian (they represent oppositional parties), disputed the decision and raised questions of Kocharyan's 10 year citizenship and 10 year residence. "We are sure that a court would satisfy our appeal in any legal country," Poghosyan said. "As I know well enough the Armenian legal system I'm not optimistic regarding this fact." The lawyer went on to say that the court's ruling against Hovanissian makes it "questionable" whether the February 19 election will be "free, just, transparent or corresponding to the European standards." Poghosyan, a political scientist and specialist in constitutional law, says his client applied through lawful means for citizenship but his right of citizenship was violated. He says that in Kocharyan's case the violations are obvious, stating that the President was never a citizen of Soviet Armenia (as Artsax was part of Azerbaijan) and never presented application for getting citizenship. Robert Kocharyan, Hovannisian claims "knows that in case of free and just elections results will be 80 percent to 20 percent, and not in his favor." While it is not expected that the appeals court will overturn the lower court ruling, such a decision isn't likely to end Hovanissian's political life (though he would not be eligible to run for President until 2013). It is expected that Hovannisian would endorse one of the oppositional party candidates, though for the time being he hasn't said who he would support. http://ArmeniaNow.com
