  2. Arpa jan, yes, its been a really really long time. 3 years ago I moved back to Armenia, now we live in a house in Ashtarak which I have renovated for good 4 month, have a baby daughter 1 year old and life seem to finally kind of settle down. Too many years I spent wondering around and realized there is only one place I want to be - my country. How is life been treating you?
  3. When I was working on this, I was thinking what ճանապարհ means, where does it begin, where does it end, the narrow escapes, sharp and long curves, circles which take you to the starting point and a big white space around. Its a beautiful word with a lot of subtle meaning.
  4. I have to correct what I said above about Holbein's works not depicted in Volkmar's book. They are, the patterns in the carpets painted by Holbein are analyzed extensively. This study of Oriental Christian carpets is monumental and Armenians are forever indebted to this scholar for giving them the deserved credit. If you don't own this book - go buy it, you'll spend hours and hours with it.
  5. Well, I am proud to say that my works and article on Armenian calligraphy were finally published in http://www.amazon.com/The-World-Encyclopedia-Calligraphy-Writing-History/dp/1402733682/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385796138&sr=8-1&keywords=encyclopedia+of+calligraphy - of course this work was done on pure enthusiasm, but at least we are now represented properly in a book which is widely circulated. If any of you want to stay in touch - I have a group dedicated to Armenian calligraphy on Facebook - you are welcome to come and join. https://www.facebook.com/groups/173475532663571/ And I will be more than happy to catch up with old friends. Be well!

  8. Our project www.Armeniangenocideposters.org needs sponsorship for the coming year. We need one time donation of $99 payed by a credit card or PayPal to a hosting company by 8th of November 2008. 9. One of the three Israeli solders killed in Gaza yesterday is an Armenian boy, David (21). I know his family. My deepest condolenses to them.
  10. Amos Oz, Al Gore among 2008 Dan David Prize recipients By Haaretz Correspondent and AP , By Tamara Traubmann Israeli author Amos Oz and former U.S. vice president Al Gore are among the recipients of this year's Dan David Prize for influential scientific, technological, cultural or social achievements, the prize administrators announced in Tel Aviv yesterday. The winners will receive the award in Israel in May. The prize, which is based at Tel Aviv University, awards three prizes of $1 million each in categories representing the past, present and future. Oz, who is one of the most widely read Israeli writers in the world and has won the Goethe and Israel prizes for his writing, was chosen "for portraying historical events while emphasizing the individual, and for exploring the tragic conflict between two nations from a very human point of view," stated a statement from the Dan David Prize. Several of Oz's works represent the pre-state era "as a backdrop for his psychological insights and his thoughtful in-depth characterizations," according to the statement. Oz has written both fiction and non-fiction, and his books include "The Hill of Evil Counsel," "My Michael" and "A Tale of Love and Darkness." Speaking from his home in Arad, Oz said he is working on a new collection of stories, though he wouldn't say what the book is about. "I'm reluctant to expose my pregnancy to X-rays," Oz said. Shared prize Oz will share the prize money with the two other winners in his category, called "Creative rendering of the past: Literature, theater, film": British playwright Tom Stoppard and Canadian-Armenian filmmaker Atom Egoyan. Gore, a Nobel Prize laureate who wrote "Earth in the Balance" and produced and starred in the Oscar-winning "An Inconvenient Truth," both about climate change, was the sole winner in the Present category, which focused on social responsibility and the environment. He was honored "for his multiple contributions in raising the conscience of the world to the challenge posed to the continuing sustainable function of the global environment and life support system." The Future category went to researchers Ellen Moseley-Thompson and Lonnie G. Thompson at Ohio State University for their studies of geological and environmental records in ice cores and Geoffrey Eglinton of Britain's University of Bristol for findings on inhabitants and climates of ancient worlds through his studies of organic chemical fossils.

    Need Work

I am looking for freelance work in design. Logotypes, websites, design for print, anything. If anyone knows of any project which might suit me, please let me know. My portfolio is as always at www.15levels.com and I can be contacted at 15levels@gmail.com Shad shnorhagal em nachapes. Ruben
  14. Barev, I am currently doing a research on Armenian calligraphy and would like to ask for help locating any useful information. Anyone knows any Armenian artists who draw calligraphic work? Might you have any literature on Armenian alphabet (only books, please, nothing from what already exists on a web, I have searched it all)? Any graphics, photographs of Armenian manuscripts with calligraphic work? Any books on Armenian typography (that one is especially important, as it has illustration of the sequence of strokes)? I want to compile a professional guide for calligraphic work in Armenian for an upcoming Encyclopedia of World Calligraphy which will be published in US. I will draw all the examples myself and will need to illustrate all known styles of Armenian scripts. "Erkatagir" Երկատազիր (iron script) "Boloragir" Բոլորագիր (round script) "Shchagir" Շխագիր (cursive script) "Notragir" Նոտրագիր. (notary script) If you might have any information on those scripts, please be so kind to forward it to me. This is a good opportunity to revive some of the calligraphic tradition and I would love to get some help doing it. All the credits for contributed material will be happily provided. Please write, (forward to anyone who might be of help) Looking forward, Ruben
  15. Mos jan, the problem is taken care of, one of the members of our forum helped, he asked not to be named, but I just want to express my gratitude to him. As with regard to the quality of the pictures on janfedayi.com - unfortunately there is nothing can be done, once an image is saved in low quality, its not possible to restore it. The only way is to locate the original files/scans.
  16. .. and I would also like to ask, if anyone knows of any freelance project for a graphic/web designer, let me know. If I make enough, I will pay for the posters site myself. Help me please, if u can. My portfolio is at www.15levels.com
  17. Hello everyone, This is my last attempt to find sponsor for www.armeniangenocideposters.org If within 2 weeks the domain wont be renewed (and subsequently, the hosting plan - altogether 120$ a year), the site will go offline. I have been paying for it from my pocket for past 2 years, but I cannot do that anymore due to my difficult financial situation at the moment. I feel bad about it, that I have to ask for help, but it makes no sense to me, that I am on my own (this is how it feels at least) and noone is out there willing to help keep this project alive. If anyone can help, please write to me at 15levels@gmail.com Shnorhagal em nachapes. Ruben
  18. On August 22, 1939, just days before the outbreak of World War II, Adolf Hitler met with his army generals. When he explained why he had decided to attack Poland, he assured them that the world would keep silent: "Who, after all, speaks today about the annihilation of the Armenians?," Hitler reasoned. This sentence has been quoted countless times as ostensible proof that the Armenian genocide served as a kind of "general rehearsal" for the annihilation of European Jewry. At the Holocaust Museum in Washington, these words are etched on one of the walls. Approximately 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Turks during World War I. It was genocide; however, the quote attributed to Hitler is of dubious provenance. It originated with a well-known American journalist, Louis Lochner, an AP reporter in Nazi Germany and a Pulitzer Prize winner. Lochner reported on Hitler's speech in a book he published in 1942. After the war, Lochner gave a version of the speech to the American prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials. The prosecutor was not satisfied, because he didn't know the source of the speech, nor under what circumstances it was leaked to the reporter. He dispatched his people to search for the official version. It turned out that on that day, Hitler gave two speeches. The Americans managed to locate the official version of both; the line about the slaughter of the Armenians does not appear in either. The version Lochner got hold of was apparently a mix of the two. The prosecution in Nuremberg decided not to submit the reporter's version to the court, but did leak it to the press; the prosecutor apologized in court for the leak and claimed it occurred by mistake. At any rate, this is how the citation entered the heritage of the Armenian holocaust. 19. Good to see old friends are doing well. Congratulations, Vahe!

  21. Dir.: Robert Guediguian Pro.: Robert Guediguian Sc.: Ariane Ascaride, Marie Desplechin, Robert Guediguian Cam.: Pierre Milon Ed.: Bernard Sasia Music: Arto Tuncboyacyyan Festivals: Rome, Toronto Cast: Ariane Ascaride, Gerard Meylan, Simon Abkarian, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Jalil Lespert Source: Films Distribution, Paris 117 min., French and Armenian, Hebrew and English subtitles Aware that he is seriously ill, Barsam wishes to return to Armenia, the land where he was born. He also wants to leave a little something for his daughter Anna. She’s full of certitudes. He’d like to teach her to doubt. When he 'disappears' in Armenia, he's careful to leave numerous clues behind so Anna knows how to find him. This forced journey in an unknown country will become what Barsam wanted it to be for her: a voyage of initiation, a sentimental education, a new adolescence. Robert Guediguian is one of the most local of filmmakers, setting each of his films in the fascinating l'Estaque quartier of Marseilles. His 2005 film, Le Promeneur du Champ de Mars, was the first to break this mold, offering a fascinating portrait of France's former president, François Mitterand. Shot and set almost entirely in Armenia, this latest film once again has virtually nothing to do with the director's familiar stomping ground of the Midi, but does reunite Guédiguian's usual company of actors - Ariane Ascaride, Gérard Meylan and Jean-Pierre Darroussin. Le Voyage en Armenie won the Best Actress Award at the 2006 Rome Festival.
  22. Yea well, I suppose I will do it next time I go to Europe... Hosank, if you go for it, provide us with the details :-)
