Kocharian Reaffirms Plans For New Nuclear Plant www.armenialiberty.org Wednesday 30, May 2007 By Emil Danielyan President Robert Kocharian on Wednesday reaffirmed the Armenian government’s ambitions plans for the construction over the next decade of a new nuclear power station in place of the aging Metsamor plant. Kocharian was quoted by his office as telling local and foreign experts sitting on his advisory Council on Atomic Energy Security that the project is “justified both in terms of energy security and economically.” No further details were reported. The government took the first major step towards the project’s implementation early last year when it pushed through parliament a bill that allows private and foreign ownership or co-ownership of nuclear facilities located in Armenia. Officials spoke of the would-be new plant as the most viable alternative to Metsamor, which meets about 40 percent of the country’s electricity needs and is due to be closed down by 2016. The government is already making preparations for its decommissioning which has long been sought by the United States and the European Union. Kocharian told the council that the Armenian Ministry of Energy will come up with a relevant plan of actions within two months. According to the presidential press service, he discussed the idea of replacing Metsamor by a similar facility at a separate meeting with Adolf Berghoffer, a German nuclear scientist chairing the council. Meeting with university students in Yerevan in late April, Kocharian said the government is still ascertaining the necessary capacity and cost of the new plant. “I think that as early as in 2012-2013 active work will be implemented for a new nuclear power plant and the upgrade of the current one,” he said. Putting the project into practice would cost Armenia at least $1 billion, a sum comparable to its government budget for this year. Armenian officials hope that foreign investors will foot the bulk of the bill. So far only Russia has shown interest in financing the project. The issue was on the agenda of a late April visit to Yerevan by Sergey Kirienko, head of Russia’s Federal Agency on Atomic Energy (Rosatom). Also, Deputy Energy Minister Areg Galstian told reporters on Tuesday that the Russian-Armenian inter-governmental commission on economic cooperation has set up a working group tasked with looking into the matter. He cautioned that discussions are currently held “on the conceptual level.” “It’s a long process and we have already embarked on it,” said Galstian. U.S. reaction to Yerevan’s plans has been far more lukewarm. “Especially given the geology here, the earthquake zone, it might be better to come up with an alternative to a second nuclear power plant,” Tom Adams, a senior State Department official coordinating U.S. economic assistance to former Soviet republics, said in May 2006. “Right now, we are leaning against that option,” he added.

Moscow court acquitted murderer of Armenian 30.05.2007 17:24 GMT+04:00 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Moscow circuit court has acquitted Roman Polusnyak, the murderer of 19-year-old Armenian Artur Sardaryan. The jury, with 10 against 2 votes, found the murderer not guilty despite the evidence of two witnesses, who identified him. Artur Sardaryan was killed May 25, 2006 in a Moscow-Pushkino train near Klyazma station. Two skinheads assaulted him shouting “Long live Russia” and plunged a knife into his chest for some 6 times. About two dozens of passengers were nearby, two of them identified Roman Polusnyak, RFE/RL reports.

Aratta-Kingdom i agree with most of the things that u said but i believe that if we can get a deal by which: 1.Shahumina is returned to Artsakh 2.Artskh becomes internationally recognized either as part of Armenia or as an independent state(i prefer the first one) 3.UN guards the border with Azerbaijan 4.Kelbajar and Lachin remain under the control of Armenia and Artsakh i do not see why we cannot give back, as a sign of good faith, the other 5 regions! i agree that people have died to get this territories, but if we want to reach a settlement, i'm afraid that we have to give back something.

if this situation continues we will see a quick military coup, turkish style! but i still haven't decided if that will be good for us or bad!

The new terminal complying with international standards and admitting 2 million passengers annually impressed the participants of the ceremony. The president of Armenia, the Catholicos, the prime minister of NKR, the Armenian ministers, businessmen, politicians participated in the ceremony of dedication. President Robert Kocharyan said the new airport is the gateway Armenia deserves, which shows what Armenia will look like in the nearest future. According to Robert Kocharyan, all the branches of the Armenian economy must be upgraded to the level of the new airport. The president said the building is the best answer to strictures when a few years ago a concession was signed with the Argentina-based Armenian businessman Eduardo Eurnekian who took up the management of the airport for 30 years. 97 million dollars out of the 220 million investments foreseen for the period of management was made. Robert Kocharyan said hopefully the second stage of the construction will start soon, which involves the new departure lounge making the airport complete. For the time being, the passenger will check up in the old building and then move to the new passenger terminal. The president of Armenia congratulated everyone and wished good luck to all those people who together with Eurnekian contributed to this beautiful and modern gateway to Armenia. Robert Kocharyan also said hopefully Eduardo Eurnekian’s investments in other spheres of the Armenian economy will be as successful. The president said the Argentine businessman made investments in agriculture, the banking system and is also likely to invest in energy. For his part, Eduardo Eurnekian said he is happy for the success of this important initiative. The businessman thanked the president of Armenia, the deceased Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan, the prime minister Serge Sargsyan, the minister of justice Davit Harutiunyan, the head of the president administration Armen Gevorgyan for their support. By the way, Prime Minister Serge Sargsyan did not attend the dedication ceremony because he was visiting Ukraine for the meeting of prime ministers of the CIS countries. The ceremony ended with the blessing of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Afterwards President Kocharyan and Eduardo Eurnekian cut the tape walked around the new terminal.

i agree with everything mentioned in the petition but either we like it or not, in order to have a settlement in the Karabakh conflict we will have to give something back! the international community will agree with us up to a point that we must have control of the surrounding territories of Artsakh in order to provide security for our people! but if someday in the future, a settlement is reached and Artsakh becomes free from Azerbaijan, it will be hard to justify why we must hold the surrounding territories!

i don't think that anyone in this topic is saying that the state and the church should meddle in each others business! there must be a line between them, but that does not mean that the state has to cut every ties that it has with the church! for example here in Greece the church and the state are separate! but in the Greek constitution there is an article that states that the Greek Orthodox Church is the official Church of Greece!

Unfortunately they r not there to leave! They r there to stay! The sad and worrying thing is that this is not happening only in Armenia! u can not imagine how many Armenians from Armenia who came to Greece after the independence have converted to Jehovah’s Witnesses!

Suspected Byelorussian citizen arrested in connection with Armenian citizen’s murder in Moscow 25.05.2007 19:55 GMT+04:00 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ A suspected Byelorussian citizen is arrested in Moscow in connection with Armenian citizen Aharon Tigranyan’s murder. The body of 30-year-old Aharont Tigranyan was discovered yesterday near the entrance of №15 house on the Rudnevka street. According to medical examination A. Tigranyan died in the result of plural knife wounds. The police has filed a criminal case. Aharon and Ashot Tigranyans lived in the above-mentioned house, RFE RL reports. A source in Moscow Eastern Prosecutor’s Office informed Aharon Tigranyan and the Byelorussian suspect had a quarrel before the incident.

The Catholicos of Echmiadzin is the "Amenain Hayots Gadoghigos" but the one of Cilicia also goes by the title of Gadoghigos. Maybe they r not yet ready to lose that title and become a Patriarchate like Jerusalem and Constantinople! There is a turkish saying "hayeroun tserk@ zenk dour yev mek had ator. atorin hamar irar g'@spanen."! That is true in this case also! They do not want to give away the big chair and replace it with a smaller one!

if the cost of getting a secondary battery is much more than the cost of this and u don't mind having another piece of hardware and extra wires in front of u, then get the APC! personally i would recommend u to get a secondary battery, because the fewer devices u have next to u when working, the better u do ur job! :D

Greeks Press Charges Over Turkish Flag Burnt In Armenian Demo AFP A prosecutor in the northern Greek city of Salonika has pressed charges against unidentified persons who burned a Turkish flag during a Greek-Armenian demonstration at the city's Turkish consulate last month, a local justice source said on Wednesday. The charge of insulting the symbol of a foreign state will enable the perpetrators to be brought to justice should they be identified via photographs and video shot during the demonstration. The incident occurred during an April 24 demonstration to mark the 92nd anniversary of massacres committed against Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The Turkish consular authorities complained to Greece over the burning. Greeks of Armenian descent annually hold demonstrations to press Turkey to admit guilt over the massacres. Ankara says 300,000 Armenians, and at least as many Turks, died in civil strife when Armenians took up arms for independence and sided with invading Russian troops during World War I. But Armenians claim up to 1.5 million of their ancestors were slaughtered in orchestrated killings that can only be seen as genocide. Greece's parliament adopted a resolution condemning the Armenian massacres as genocide in 1996.

first of all no one can get hold of Echmiadzin! Echmiadzin is the mother see, center of Christianity in Armenia, and if there will be any holding that will be done by Echmiadzin! Echmiadzin has tried to bring the 2 Catholicosates closer in the past! after the death of Vasgen I, Echmiadzin made a decision (a decision that was not in the best of interest for Echmiadzin, but was for the nation) and appointed Karekin I, the Catholicos of Cilicia at the time, as the Catholicos of Echmiadzin and of all Armenians! that decision was made because the ppl who were leading Echmiadzin thought that by this move they will bring the two Catholicosates closer, and maybe lead to a unificaton of the church! unfortunately they were mistaken! Antilias (and the tashnags, who r the political force behind Antelias) proved that they r not in favor of a unification. they thought, and still think, that it is of their best interest to keep the churches separated.

i wish i could say that they r doing this because of wrong planning! but unfortunately that is not the case here. i'm afraid that they know exactly what the consequences of this kind of actions are but they still go and pursue their own agenda! i just hope that they change their party policy somewhere in the near future!
