UEFA may cancel football matches between Armenian and Azeri national teams 20.06.2007 13:28 GMT+04:00 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ In Heerenveen, Holland the UEFA Executive Committee will make a decision on holding football matches between Armenian and Azeri national teams in the framework of EURO 2008 qualifying matches, UEFA Spokesman William Gaillard said. He informed the session of the UEFA Executive Committee will be held in few days, “This issue is included in the agenda of the session. Members of the Executive Committee will exchange views on the place of holding matches between Azerbaijan and Armenia. It is quite possible that the final decision will be made during this session.” The Spokesman stated that UEFA may cancel matches between Armenian and Azeri national teams, since regulations of the organization do not forbid canceling matches. “But, first of all, the parties are to give consent with the issue. Executive Committee may pass any decision in the meeting,” William Gaillard stated. UEFA Executive Committee meeting is expected to be held during U-21 European Championship final stage in Netherlands. The championship will finish on June 23. UEFA expects final decision to be passed on the same date. It is expected that UEFA will officially make a decision on the place of holding matches between Azerbaijan and Armenia till that time, APA reports.

EURO 2008: Spain offered Armenian and Azeri National Teams to play in its territory 07.06.2007 16:55 GMT+04:00 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ Spain is ready to give its fields for holding a match between Armenian and Azeri National Football Teams in the framework of the European Cup 2008 selection round. Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos made this offer during his visit to Baku and Yerevan this week, sources in the Spanish MFA informed on Wednesday. According to the information of those sources, Armenian and Azeri authorities reacted positively to the initiative of Madrid. In case of their agreement, the final word belongs to UEFA President Michel Platini. The sources say that Miguel Angel Moratinos had a telephone conversation with Michel Platini on Wednesday. The latter welcomed Spain’s initiative, offering to discuss it on the level of football federations of Armenia and Azerbaijan. National Teams of both countries play in the same group “A” of the selection round of the European Cup 2008. Their first meeting is scheduled for September 8 in Azerbaijan, the return match may be held 4 days later in Armenia, “Radio of Russia” reports. The fate of both matches is not clear because of political differences on the Karabakh problem, diplomatic sources in Madrid underscore.

first i will start by asking u not to make this thread as a RAG-ARF battleground! The ARF collaborated with the Phalangists(a fascist movement created by Pierre Gemayel after he visited Nazi Germany and got inspired by Hitler's youth movement) so get over it and apologize! As for RAG, they have so many problems now that they cannot even sell themselves to the public(this goes for someone who suggested in a previous post that RAG of Lebanon sold the Armenians in the elections) :D! I do not consider Hezballah a terrorist movement(of course someone's terrorist is the another's freedom fighter and vise versa)! they are part of the Lebanese people and unfortunately they are the only ones that have the courage to defend their land! In last summer's aggressive attack of Israel against Lebanon, it was very disturbing to see Hezballah fight and the Lebanese army (and the rest of the militias) do nothing! some may say that Hezballah started the war, some may disagree with Hezballah in many issues, but when a foreign country invades your territory, you put aside your differences, you pick up arms and you defend your land(the rest of you issues you can solve later)! If Lebanon and the Lebanese really want something to change they first have to change their narrow sectarian oriented way of thought! Either they start putting their country before their sects or change their election system(which by the way is based on a census conducted more than 50 years ago and does not represent the current figures of the population) and let the majority lead the way! As i wrote in a previous post, all problems of Lebanon originate from their sectarian way of government, way of thought and way of life! You have a small country where some of the population is with Syria, others are with Iran, others with Israel, others with the US and others with France! this is not a country, this is ........! miain garmir louis m@ bagas e yergrin vraien! My mother and her family is from Leb, i've been there a couple of times, i consider it a second home and i find it really sad that a country with so much natural beauty and with good people(everybody is good until proven otherwise! :D) can tear itself apart in this way! as long as the Lebanese do not work together and they rather seek council from third parties, this will be the fate of Lebanon!

unfortunately after these last events Lebanon's future doesn't look that good! the decisive blow was delivered last summer by Israel, who destroyed everything that Lebanese people had build after the end of the civil war! using a stupid pretext to start last years war, Israel showed that it will never allow a country next to it develop in any way! as for who is behind the last attack, i think that the US and Israel are the most likely suspects! after i read in the news last week that the US sent six planes full of weapons to the Lebanese government in order to "fight the islamist rebels" i started suspecting that things will go much worse in Lebanon! because there is no way that those arms were sent in order to be used against some doznes of palestinian militants in some god forsaken refugee camps! i believe that these arms were sent in order to be used against Hezballah. (i read a while ago that the US will sent more weapons to the Lebanese government after these last events) for Israel the only threat at the moment in the arab world is Hezballah! last year they proved a worthy opponent! wouldn't it be extremely convenient for Israel if the Lebanese started fighting each other again? the threat from palestinians and Hezballah from Lebanon would be gone! however i have to say that the Lebanese ppl are also to be blamed because they are not united! after everything that has happened to them, they still haven't realized that other countries are interfering in their affairs to these extend, because they allow them to! there is no national sentiment in the country, only sectarian, and this is where everything starts from! as for the UN resolution it worths nothing, solves nothing and it is not worth saying anything about it! togh arnen yev ch@sem our tnen!

i belive that some of the things that i wrote in my previous posts were either misunderstood or misinterpreted! the idea of returning 5 regions to the Azeri side should be considered after the final solution, when Artsakh will be a state recognized by the international community with it's institutions and boarders! i strongly believe that we must look for a long turn solution of this conflict! keeping everything is the best option, no one will deny that! we can keep the lands and defend them successfully now and for the 20 or so years to come! but what happens next? can we as a nation live the next 20,50,100 years in a constant threat? also Armenians are leaving Armenia by thousands (i don't think that anyone really believes the current estimate that the population is 3 mil)! who will fight in 20 years time if a war starts? the Armenians who left the country? lots of Hayastantsis that i know left Armenia after the independence so that they could avoid the army and the war or Artsakh! u really believe that they will come back and fight? or maybe u think that the diasporans will come by the thousands to fight! how many from the diaspora participated in the Artsakh war? (no doubt there will be people that will go and fight but how many will they be?) having this thoughts (along with some others) in my mind, i believe that if we come across a proposal for a solution that gives Artsakh it's independence and security (Kelbajar and Lachin are kept as a corridor that connects Armenia and Artsakh), guarantees the new Armenian-Artsakhi boarders and returns the other 5 regions to Azerbaijan, we should take it! most probably the Azeris will refuse any proposal for a solution in the last minute! :D

i don't expect from him to criticize the turkish government or their policies, but i also don't expect from him to act as a turkish mouthpiece and promote their agenda every time he meets foreign officials!

Strong Dram ‘Good For Armenian Growth’ www.armenialiberty.org Wednesday 30, May 2007 By Hovannes Shoghikian and Emil Danielyan The dramatic strengthening of the Armenian dram has been a major factor behind Armenia’s double-digit economic growth recorded in recent years, a senior economist from the International Monetary Fund said on Wednesday. The national currency has gained more than 50 percent in nominal value against the U.S. dollar since the start of its appreciation in late 2003. The process slowed down in the first few months of this year but seems to be again gaining momentum. The Armenian government and Central Bank have attributed the exchange rate fluctuation to a surge in hard currency remittances sent home by hundreds of thousands of Armenians living and working abroad. They also point to the dollar’s overall weakening against other major world currencies. Local manufacturers and economists critical of the government have expressed serious concern at the trend, criticizing the authorities in Yerevan for their refusal to heavily intervene in the foreign-exchange market. They say the stronger dram has hurt Armenian exports and widened the country’s huge trade deficit. Some of the critics have gone as far as to accuse the authorities of “artificially” strengthening the dram to benefit government-connected importers of fuel and other basic commodities. But both the IMF and the World Bank have dismissed the criticism, voicing support for monetary policies pursued by the Armenian Central Bank. David Owen, a senior advisor in the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department, insisted on Wednesday that the strong dram has actually contributed to Armenian growth by suppressing inflation. “We think that the relatively flexible approach to the exchange rate -- allowing more appreciation than elsewhere -- combined with tight fiscal policy have contributed to the very good performance on inflation and to the high growth rate that has been achieved in Armenia,” he told reporters in Yerevan. Owen argued that Armenian exports have grown by an average of 20 percent in the last few years even if they were largely flat in 2006. He said the authorities should help to boost them by implementing more economic reforms and strengthening business competition. According to government data for the first quarter of this year, the exports were up by 25 percent from the same period in 2006, totaling $231 million. But they continued to pale in comparison with imports that jumped by 52 percent to $645 million. The first-quarter official figures also show the Armenian economy growing by 11 percent year on year, putting it on track to expand at a double-digit rate for a sixth consecutive year.
