I'm in! I used to play Yahoo Chess quite a bit. I'm president of the Chess Club at my school. Doesn't mean I'm any good, but hey, it's something.

Alright, now this is just cool. Google has been my among my favorite sites for a long time and just keeps on getting better. Replaced Alta Vista for me many many years ago... thanks Azat!

Ouch. Too bad you spent all that time translating, Groong had the article translated for them already. http://groong.usc.edu/news/msg59378.html

Sorry Domino you're on your own. I don't know much about vava, who wants to give me a short bio?

I'd love to as well, count me in Me too about the accents.. if you spoke to me in English, you wouldn't know I was Armenian either. I'm not one of those Armen Quebec / Sourp Hagop kids would can't speak either of Canada's official languages! (Just kidding of course.. they could well chastize me for my awful-sounding Armenian!) I thought Der Bedrosian was considering running again, what happened? He's needed to solve the Artsax problem before Heydar croaks and Armenia dances the tango with Ilham.
-

Almost missed this thread! Thanks Domino will check it out.

Seems like Hagarag was right all along. At least this time we can't accuse Bush of lying to us.. after all, he is "taking care of the Armenians".
-
This is an unmitigated outrage which will be exploited by Armenia's enemies for years to come, whether or not the Bush administration decides to withdraw the ROA from the list. Weems is having a field day.

WHAT?! That came out of left field. [ December 13, 2002, 08:06 PM: Message edited by: wh00t ]

Alright, let's start this. Not really a review, I'll post some random thoughts every now and then. **spoiler** Perhaps the most troubling scene of the entire movie for me was not a genocide shot at all. Rather, it was the touching dance sequence of Arshile Gorky. With a heartbreakingly forlorn look on his face, Gorky puts on an old folk record and tries desperately to rekindle his lost past which was so brutally taken away from him. Look mom, he is saying, I remember our culture. I haven't forgotten. If any scene has stuck with me weeks after seeing the film, it is this one. Very powerful. I am very surprised that there hasn't been more commentary on it, rather more attention has been given to another dance scene of quite a different nature... The Genie Awards are the Canadian equivalent of the Oscars. Egoyan always gets nominated for whatever he puts out. EXOTICA, for instance, massively sweeped the Awards in the 1994, taking 8 awards including Best Picture and Best Director. He also got Best Picture and Best Director for THE SWEET HEREAFTER, and Best Adapted Screenplay for FELICIA'S JOURNEY. How will he fare with ARARAT?

Down here we call it an "ampoule".. bet then I live in Frenchtown Canada

Does anybody know if the Central Park jogger (brutally raped, beaten and left for dead in 1989) is Armenian? I guess we will all know when she releases her book in April, but I wanted to know if anyone had any information. Somebody on another board is claiming that their family went to church with her, and that she's Armenian. Also, if it's true, it wouldn't be the first time that Armenians got caught up in such messes. The Son on Sam, David Berkowitz, had an Armenian victim (19-year old Virginia Voskerichian). Also, Efren Saldivar, the Glendale Adventist Medical Center nurse, killed at least one Armenian in his spree. Russian Andrei Chikatilo also killed a 15-year old Armenian girl among others. This is old news... --- WASHINGTON-"Shove it up your ass, how's that?" lashed out Heath Lowry, chairperson of Princeton University's Ataturk Turkish studies department, when approached yesterday by Armenian community activists with a copy of a petition signed by more than a hundred of America's leading academic and literary figures condemning his efforts to discredit scholarship on the Armenian Genocide. The petition, entitled, "Taking a Stand Against The Turkish Government^Rs Denial of the Armenian Genocide and Scholarly Corruption in the Academy-A Statement Issued by Concerned Scholars and Writers," was presented to Lowry following a panel discussion he had moderated during a half -day seminar on Turkey at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. The four-hour-long program, presented by The Middle East Institute and sponsored by Johns Hopkins SAIS and the Assembly of Turkish-American Associations, was entitled "Perspectives on Turkey," and included the participation of academics and government officials. Among the topics addressed during the conference were "Domestic and Foreign Policy Issues" and "Turkish Studies in North America." Lowry, who moderated the "Islam and Politics" portion of the program, has in recent months been the subject of growing controversy because of his close ties with Turkish government officials and the circumstances surrounding his appointment to chair the Princeton Turkish studies program. The Armenian National Committee of America - Eastern Region, has repeatedly called upon Princeton University to end its association with Lowry. Local Armenian Youth Federation and Armenian National Committee activists were present to distribute the petition to the approximately 200 individuals who attended the program. The petition was signed by a broad range of renowned scholars including Israel Charney, Helen Fein and Henry Louis Gates, as well as Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Kurt Vonnegut and Arthur Miller. Before the beginning of the program, several of the individuals were asked to stop placing the petitions on chairs and they were subsequently asked to leave the premises. Sarig Armenian, a Greater Washington AYF "Ani" Chapter member, one of the first participants asked to leave, explained, "Shortly after I began placing petitions on chairs, organizers of the event became visibly agitated. They rather tersely told me to evacuate the premises, and the front security guard was instructed not to allow me back into the building. This occurred in spite of the event being advertised as open to public." Alex Sardar, who approached Lowry after he had ended his panel discussion, recounted, "When I approached Professor Lowry and presented him with the petition, he was visibly angered, far beyond anything that could be reasonably expected in such a setting. And when I inquired about his opinion on the matter, I was taken aback by his vulgar and extremely inappropriate response." Following the exchange Lowry stormed out of the room.
