Dear MiB Iranian langauges and Armenian have probably a longer common history than just to Persian. It came as surprise to me that Armenians pre-Christians mythology is like Iranians one: Aramazd , Ahuramazda Mihr, Mehr Anahid, Anahita Tir, Tir The above is pre-Persian-empire-time. We know even during the first Persian empire Achemenid , there were religion, language ... freedom. What I have read , the first time Persian empire systematicly tried to impose its religion ( Zarathushtriansim) on Armenia was during Sasanian. It happened when Armenia converted as first nation to Christianity. The next time Iran was involved in Armenia, was during Safavids time when Iranians converted to Shiaism. It was as a last attempt to stop the Sunni Othomans. What I have understood the majority of loan words are from middle Persian. I am sure that there are some Armenians word in Persian since many Armenians professionals worked at Achemenid empire and some generals in the army were Armenians as Dâdarši. It means even Armenian soldiers were employed at the empire. We know that during the Arab-Persian wars Armenians were the only nation to send aid to Persia ... Today we have many Armenian heritage in Iranian Azarbaijan province... During the Shia Safavid the Armenians had specefic rights : didnt pay taxes, got start capital from the Shah, Islamic-non-muslim-law was not implemented on Armenians..etc Even today Armenian as languages is the only language taught at schools beside Persian... The Tati (Persian) of republic of Azerbaijan , about 1-2 million people, are from Sasanids time. Today a handfull of them speak Persian , the majority speak Turkic!( http://www.azer.com/aiweb/categories/magaz...sgal_lahij.html ) They and Talishi ( another Iranian tribe) in Republic of Azerbaijan did/do live very close to Armenians in that area. All above means the exchanges can not be isolated to a certain time of history.

Well, if you are thinking of his Christian background..not even Sunni muslims can go for president as it is now ! But after a new revolution and changes in constitution..you never know. What goes for his Armenian heritage, I dont think people care so much. He is simply Andy the entertainer. Especialy the youth dont care. I mean his CDs are illegaly copied in 6 millions ex! Just compare it to how many the best artists in west sale. They sings in English, they have the entire world as market. If there are 20 million household in Iran, it means 7 million household like his music ! Afterall he is born there, grown up there. http://www.andymusic.com/media/LAweekly.htm In surveys taken in Iran, when asked who they'd vote into the presidency, hundreds of thousands have penciled in one word: "Andy." And in Armenia, Uzbekistan, Paris, Montreal, Sydney, Chicago, Houston - anywhere the Persian diaspora has spread - one word will suffice: "Andy." They'll know who you're talking about. He's the only Andy that matters.

Yes I guess that is the key. He is entertainer and fun. The youth in Iran havent good time. 70% of population are under 30 years ! He sings catchy songs and get them and good mood. I guess after a new revolution Andy could candidate as president. He has a good chance.

http://www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/Music/9905/19/persian.music.wb/ ..... Andy cites a report in a Persian newspaper that says every album produced in Los Angeles sells 6 or 7 million copies in Iran. "When they say 'sells,' they mean underground, bootlegged, illegally because they can't sell it in the stores," he clarifies ...

I dont realy understand why Andy is so great ! There is nothing magnefic in his voice, lyric.. Read this one: http://ino.uzpak.uz/eng/cult_art_eng/cult_art_eng_2710.html He has been in Uzbeckistan, and people from Bahrain, USA, Iran..travel there to see him ! I have heard that second generation kids in USA dont speak Persian at home, but when Andy is on TV and sings they repeat after him.

It is always sad to read news that people as Viguen are gone ! He was definitly a pioneer in Persian music. He came with something new but kept the old one. He had a nice mixture of Persian lyric, his Armenian heritage, Spainsh trace.....etc in his own music. If I am not wrong he became famous by this hit during -50 ! http://www.iranian.com/ram/Vigen/mahtaab.ram

"Nakh" is used in modern Persian az "nakhost , nakhostin". ( pronounced as "nokhost, nokhostin" ). It is understood as " first, initial, .." . ( for ex , "nokhstvazir" = prime minister, "barge nokhost" = initial page, main page..) According to this pure Persian dictionary: http://iranianlanguages.com/dictionary.php...g&word=naxostin "Nakhostin" means "former" too. ( It was new to me, always thought it means "first"! ) Anyway, the word, "nakh" in Persian means, "thread". Nairi! Join the forum if you are interested and have time. I am sure there are cases your input would be of great value.

Yes, that is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much. Unfortunately I dont know Armenian so I can not help so much But I hope Armenians on this forum get interested in it and read and learn... and get better understanding of Armenian as language. There hasnt been so many research on the affix-system for Persian and the system is a absolut necessarity for the language to survive and stay pure to reproduce new words. ( in current situation because of the religion , Islam, Persian is affected by Arabic which as a semetic language is not affix oriented. And in recent time the global effect from French and English. Even thought the English language is an Indo-European language but usage of latin affixes sounds strange in Persian. It has no real/natural connection to Persian.) So the option left is to look in middle Persian and in some cases in Sanskrit. Both middle Persian and Sanskrit are not a living language. What stroke me was that around Iran we have Armenia ! Which is far away from Iran but still close to Iran. So maybe affixes in modern Armenian can be find in middle persian.....etc. Some of the affixes in your list at a first look exists in modern Persian, for ex: ham, ak, ang, ik, pan, var, uk Anyway, Thank you. I will put your list at http://www.iranianlanguages.com/forum/ so hopefully people will get a better understanding for Persian affixes..etc.

I would be pleased if people here could write down Armenians affix-system. (or give me links to pages on the net about Armenian affisx-system. I searched the net but didnt find any related information. I am looking after something like this: Latin Preposition: DE down or away from Latin Prefix: de- default Latin Preposition: CUM with Latin Prefix: com- co- col- con- cor- compound cooperate collect convolution correspond .... )

The Arabic "Kafir" has its root in Aramic . In Turkish it has changed into "gavar, gavor". "gabr" in old Persian refered to a Zarathustrian. But since its negative usage as infidle, its usage has been "banned" in Iran.

"hajis" must be "pure" Armenian. The Arabic word "haj" means pilgrimage , immigration ..etc I have not heard of "hajis" in Persian or Turkish for that matter. The only word in Persian which comes close to "hajis" as please..etc is "khaahesh". "khaahesh" has several usage in Persian such as: "asking, wish, please, dont mention it..".

I know that Artoosh is an armenian name, and I mostly recognize Armenian language ( spoken in Iran), anyway this one is a mystery for me: http://www.persepolis.com/Music/scripts/ar...AID=98&SID=2378 Does he sing in Armenian? The first verses of his lyric sounds "Persian" ! First time I heard it, I thought he sang in Persian, a strange one, but it isnt Persian, that is for sure. I wonder if he sings in a mixed language?

Pezeshk in modern Persian means doctor. ( old pronounciation "bejeshk"). I do not think many Persian words are related to it. Anyway a linguist know it better.

It is common among Iranian, even today, to say "nush" (cheers) before drinking. I dont know whatever it means immortality or cheers. But it is undertood as "enjoyment" of drink or food.

a wild guess. probably the word "derbend" is originated from Persian "darband" ( "dar" , door. "band", bind). There is a place near Tehran with the name "darband": http://images.google.com/images?q=darband http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/listAre...php?AreaID=1416 What I understand , "darband" means "mountain pass" ! So "ermeni derbendi" is "Armenian mountain-pass".
