Armenian Tv

Ok, I have some issues with the TV programs airing on 24 hour Armenian Television and same problems present in TV stations airing in Glendale and other communities.

Everyday there is somebody on air talking about "hayapahpanum", and how Armenian youth are culturally assimilating with others , yet they fail to see that THEY(the one's who set the example) are the problem.

Language. Turn the TV on to listen and watch Armenian shows, and you get either Russian, Persian, English, or something else. It's ridiculous, the news is done in Russian, commercials in Russian, sometimes Persian. Music Videos are non-Armenian, movies in Russian. Now I know that the producers, such as Sarki know that there are a lot of Armenians who don't speak Russian, such as myself. The whole point of me buying Armenian Channel is to watch Armenian things.

I see this as a very deep problem for the diaspora youth. If you see that your own culture is displaying music, movies, and other things that belong to another culture on their own time, then that must be what's COOL, and they will dress, talk, and act in the manner which they see.

I am aware that there are good Russian and Persian movies that should be shown to the Armenians, and I don't think it would take much to TRANSLATE to Armenian. A good example of this is "Voske Hort" which is a Soviet film that I like very much and it is translated in Armenian so I can understand what the hell they are saying.

I hope I sound angry, because I am. I have voiced my opinion to the TV station, but all I got was there are a lot of Armenians in LA from Hayastan and they like watching Russian movies.

Please tell me your opinions, am I wrong here?

since you have started it...

i have a problem with the 24-hour awtv, the armenian channel. my specific problem is with their global news anchor, Merry Mouradian. there are really fews things in this world that make me annoyed or make me go paranoic, and one of them is this lady. everytime i hear her reporting the global news i want to smash the tv and go jump off the bridge... and all this in all seriousness.

and the reason for all this is the way she speaks armenian. i really appreciate her effort to provide global news to armenian community, however, she should at least try to do a good job at it. first, she does not herself talk in armenian well. second, the materials she presents are direct, and i mean it, direct translations of english material. she translates the materials word by word, literally, without finding the right equavalent of the words in armenian, without changing the order of words in the sentences to make it proper armenian. add to that her special annoying intonation and melancholic voice and you get the best weapon to make masses go wild.

listening to this "armenian" reports are just uniquely horrible experiences that i do not wish to my worst enemy.

You're talking about Armenian TV in the US right? Because I haven't noticed any Persian movies in Armenia and they show Russian films on Russian channels mostly? And believe me Armenian TV is like 90% crap. So don't be upset that you can't watch anything Armenian lol ;) Like months ago they tried to do a "MTV Dismissed" kind of program here... and it's gone now lol ...hmm i wonder why... Edited by skittles

This is an incredibly good translation. The movie in Russian is very good, but the Armenian translation and the voice of the main character as well as other characters is so good that the movie actually has a better quality in Armenian. A must see movie. There are not many Soviet movies dubbed in Armenian. But there are many voice-over translated American movies, hope they won't show them in Glendale, that would be funny :)

I don't remember who it was, but someone told me that they had read Shakespeare in Russian in their youth and then in English when they had learned the language and become disappointed in the latter case. Is Russian more powerful or was the person's expectation too high?

I am not sure Stormig, I doubt. It may have been an artful translation. But neither my English nor Russian (especially) are good enough to know that for sure.

This is such a great movie and a really great tranlation as well... last time I saw this movie was maybe 10 years ago, I would give much to see it again, but how, where? :(

Well, I won't say anything about the Armenian TV, because I am used to it and I don't mind Russian movies on it though I can understand the fury of those who don't speak Russian. But how great was mu surprise when I first saw the american armenian programs. I couldn't understand anything because they were in West Armenian. Well, I decided to watch programs in East Armenian, but they were even worse: a mix of the two ones plus American accent. Believe me I know for sure that these people can speak Armenian without an American accent. Why do they make themselves ridiculuos?

How many billions does it take to dub foreign movies and their stupid soap operas? For a country with a big diaspora, it woudn't be an unjustifiable expense to make their TV look a bit more advanced than that of a 1970s banana republic. H1 is downright depressing to watch, except when they interview somebody interesting once in a blue moon. In addition to innumerable shorfalls in content, the sound quality is atrocious to boot. The only redeeming quality were the commercials, and now they are largely replaced by stupid ones geared for the American diaspora, when watched via satellite. Well, I know how to cheer myself up: it can only get better.

I hate dubbed movies. Use subtitles!!! Much cheaper, faster, easier and attractive!

I agree, but from the perspective of a diasporan, in the absence of Armenian-made movies, the best thing would be movies properly dubbed in Armenian (rather than the horrible, unprofessional voiceover -- fine for documentaries, unacceptable for anything else). Besides, I would get a kick out of seeing Armenian come out of the mouths of Hollywood stars. :)

Of course the real problem is that the government is too dumb and visionless to have a few diapora-oriented, professionally executed satellite (or even internet) channels. I guess they figure that their underperformance at home makes sure that the diaspora (and its cash) is replenished with no conscious effort at preservation and inspiration on their part.

I so so so disagree!! Maybe because I grew up in Holland, land of subtitles, next to Germany, land of dubbing. Everything in Holland is subtitled, including the news etc. You get to hear real voices with real people. No mouths moving in the wrong direction and missing out what is really said. This is especially annoying when you understand the foreign language!! Like that Turkish doc I was watching. I cringe every time the voice-over comes on and drowns the English or Armenian. Seriously, I really wouldn't mind the Dutch system applied to Armenia TV. I'd even be proud.

As I said before, from the perspective of a diasporan, what would be the point of watching a movie on Armenian channel, if it is in English/French/whatever, with subtitles. I agree with you that it would be better for the audience in Armenia. That's why I emphasized the diasporan perspective etc. I hope it's clear now. I wouldn't want you to so, so, soooo disagree with me. ;)

Edit: Now I get it. I still disagree with the diasporan perspective of wanting things dubbed. I hate dubbing. That's why. I wouldn't mind reading Armenian and potentially understanding the original language. Agreed on the rest :) Edited by nairi

Stop complaining remember how bad Armenian Tv was a few years back. That channel coming through Armenia which I think was h1 ? I'm not sure, but that was top of the line stuff compared to the Armenian TV here in L.A.

Hey whats up with channel 18 every sunday or saturday where it shows an hour of Armenian tv. It seems like it's still the 1992 armenian tv which is the equivelant of 1970's American TV. ( quality wise). I was also wondering what channels Armenians in Hollywood get. But Glendale is going up in quality programming.
