Sip
http://zr2.cs.ucla.edu/sm/wisc/ice3_tn.jpg http://zr2.cs.ucla.edu/sm/wisc/ice1_tn.jpg (click for bigger pics) Madison at night ... We finally started to get a bit of the white stuff ... so I decided to give my new hobbie (ice driving) and camera a try ... I LOVE driving on snow and ice! The vids below should be ok for modem users but they will take time. Probably not worth it unless you have broadband! They are encoded using MS Mpeg4 and should play in windows media player ... other players, I don't know. Vid 1 (600K) ... I stopped an inch short of hitting the camera! Vid 2 (500K) ... This is me playing with the auto-4x4 mode ... after doing the 360, the noise you hear is the transfer case automatically engaging the front after it detects the slip in the back (I turn it on after the slide) Vid 3 (1.3MB) ... just goofing around. Accelerated
Yeah, good stuff. Takes a while for the box to transfer the power no? If it took so long in a sports car on wet tarmac, I suspect you would be in a lot of trouble....
Sip
Yah and this is automatic ... the torque converter takes a while to lock up although there are ways to reprogram the computer for tighter more sporty shifts. Since my factory warranty is done, I may start screwing around with those but I probably won't spend the $300 to get the programmer (I'll spend money on the Jeep ). If I try hard enough, I may be able to get the tires to bark starting 1st gear but that's it... it won't give you the snap-the-neck back feel of a sports car About the blazer 4x4, it has 4 modes: Normal "2HI" which means basically rear wheel drive. 4HI which means front differential is engaged with the transfer case (and rear). 4LO which adds an extra 2:1 gear in the transfer case ... for low speed crawling Mine has this thing called "auto 4x4" .. it uses ABS speed sensors to detect when the rear wheels are slipping and slowly applies torque to the front wheels until traction is regained. Normally, you are not supposed to drive this vehicle in 4HI mode on pavement since that would cause bind-up in the drive train (especially when turning) since the fronts are forced to turn at the same speed as rear. However, with auto-4x4, there is differentiation done in the transfer case so you are fine driving around like that. It takes some time for it to engage but it works great on sand, ice, and snow and normal driving. My Jeep is manual. I can't wait to get it out here! I got to drive it around a bit on snow last time I was in LA (in the mountains) and WOW is all I can say!!! Plus that jeep has driver selectable front and rear differential lockers! That means ALL 4 wheels can be totally locked together and spinning with the engine. My blazer has an automatic locker in the rear which locks by itself but the front is open. This means, in really bad conditions only 3 wheels will get engine torque.
