America-Hye
A fellow student of mine has lived recently in Moscow. They have told me that it has become a thoroughly European city, at least on the surface. What is happening in Yerevan? Athens East or Ramallah North? Moscow has always been a European city, when not under Mongol-Tatar occupation.Unless your definition of European is "Western".Athens managed to meet the highest European standards too, Yerevan is still struggling but it looks promising. Jewish Friend
My son was on busines in Moscow about six months ago. In fact he was there when the I believe the play hall was taken over by Chechnian{sp?} rebels. He has workers there. He took a lot of pictures of the architecture including churches. He said he had to pay off poorly paid soldiers a lot to let him alone...lots of "speeding tickets", etc. that were rigged with payoffs. You get the picture. Lots of problems still with the economy. But the people themselves on the street loved him being an American doing business there. He was told the U.S. funnels money into places like Georgia to keep the people from selling away nuclear related materials. for cash. Maybe so..who knows? Jewish Friend
shiner
It is said officially that 40% of the economy there is controlled by the russian mob. In reality it's more like 80% if not 100%.
Accelerated
Yes, Moscow is indeed a very modern (western) city (was there a few months ago)....but you would expect that considering almost 80% of the entire Russian economy turnover takes place there! second is St Petersburg with just over 10%, the rest is backwater. Yerevan is still struggling but it looks promising. we can only hope, but it will never happen with the type of people we have now at the helm.
