Sip Posted June 29, 2003 Report Share Posted June 29, 2003 Now that July is almost upon us, I wanted to get this started soon so we see who's up ... last year it was me, Thoth, and Tiggy and as far as I remember, I kicked everyone's arse ... well, Thoth may have different stories but it only matters what I think No but seriously, Thoth did kick my butt and actually gave me a VERY good player that helped me wipe the league towards the end (thanks oh great one ) but Tiggy did get his behind kicked all over the place I propose this year we do it on yahoo instead of CNN. Unfortunately, none of the start players I use to know something about are around anymore - Payton, Montana, Marino, Emmit Smith.... all gone... You can be pretty safe with Yahoo's prerankings of players so you are sure to get a good set. I set the draft to Autopick ... there were no real good times left for a live draft but if we decide to do live, we can change it. Thoth, sign up before you go on any extended trips I have a couple of other buddies that will probably join so it should be a fun league ... feel free to tell others who may be interested ... I set the team limit to the maximum allowed (20). Come on Azat, Vava, and the others? And what makes yahoo better then what we did last year...each seems to have plusses and minuses from my experience - don't know if I've ever done Yahoo before though... I will be out of town for awhile...wish I had more time to prepare (like last year)...oh well - I'll manage. I know at least one other Artmnenian who would be (very) interested (and has done this sort of thig before) - should I invite him? And if you are unfamiliar with players and how all of this works I recommend caution...we are a bunch of sharks you know...and you will be like...well...fresh blood...LOL Seriously - I will help & give tips as I can (like last year when I felt sorry for Sip - I gave him a line on a player to pick up (which I should have got instead///oh well)...and it basically turned his team inot a powerhouse... If you truly enjoy (American) football - then fantasy can be a blast. But there is a certain amount of knowledge - of players/stats and of how scoring works & such - that are really necessary for success. Lots of folks get frustrated becuase - like you - they may not know the 2nd, 3rd etc ordrplayers - ones that can really mean all the difference for your team...or they are just unsure about what to do (because choosing your players doesn't end at the draf - to win - you must be adding and dropping players all year long - and be aware of which players are performing and which are not - etc)...anyway - hope I didn't scare you off...please do join us (if you think you are up to the task! Plus, there's really nothing much to it ... I have seen people that finish in the top 3 and never even touch their teams and leave everything on default Thoth, sure ... definitely invite your friend. There are already a couple of my buddies in there Anyone is welcome as far as I am concerned. About players: Players will be selected when the draft takes place. After everyone signs up a team, I will set the league ready for draft. Right now, it's set to "autopick" ... this means that yahoo will automatically assign players to each team based on the pre-rankings. Yahoo has default rankings which you can go and change if you want. For example, if you really want Marshal Faulk, you can set him as #1 for you and when your turn comes up, yahoo will give you that player (if he is still available). The order of teams in the draft will be random ... but once an order is set, then yahoo will go through the list and assign players. By the way, this means that if you have player "x", no other team can have player "x". You can trade players with others after the draft. Note that there are no players for defense. .. you get to choose a whole team as defense. This keeps things simpler. The other option we have is to go with a "live" draft .. in that case, all of us have to be at a PC at the specified time and we get to pick players one by one in real time! If you are not there, yahoo will give you players according to the rankings (just like autopick). The cool thing about live draft is that if you see other players are picking up good quarterbacks, you can go and pick up a good wide receiver or defense! LOL)Don't you worry about me - I'm familiar with football. I was a linebacker and later a safety (as everyone grew and I did not) in junior-high and high-school. But soon, I was simply out-sized and threw in the towel. I just haven't paid any attention to pro-football in about ten years or so. There are all these teams now that I have never heard of (there a team in jacksonville???) and many have changed cities - ie. Rams & Cardinals... Anyway, I just don't know the players/teams/coaches anymore... but once I get into it, I'm sure I'll hold my own.... Just let me know how this draft works, and how to drop/pick-up players and everything'll be just fine. BTW is there a payroll cap on these leagues or can you pick up every free agent in the league? Also I notice a single rank list - vice by position...does the AI know when you have filled your positions? In some way - even if so - this is funky IMO...I actually like the rank by position and determine rounds that you go for each position...but I remember that y9u weren't to keen on it. Whan is the draft going to be (make in late - so I have time to do all this stuff when I get back from my trip...). I am considering taking my fantasy books with me - but if it turns out like last year's August trip - i only even looked at them on the way out on the plane. You have a fixed number of spots in your roster ("bench spots") so you can't just run around and pick every player. You also don't want to just have wide receivers since one of your running backs may have an off day or get injured and if you don't have any good ones on the bench, you are outta luck since other teams may have the good ones. Thoth, the prerankings are not the best as they could be. But I think overall, the yahoo setup is more streamlines. But as you said, each has it's own +'s and -'s. We'll see how this goes this year .... hope it'll be smooth Of course there will be a slight learning curve to get used to everything. I think this is going to be a great season. I can't wait for the draft - eventhough I'm super busy these days....let us know when you're ready to roll... oh, and about the draft, i have a question: Is the auto draft by position? Ie. everyone picks RBs until there starting rosters are full, then move on the WR and so forth? Or, if I put a TE as my first pick, will the TE be drafted first? I had QB, kicker, defense as my top picks!!!! ... yahoo picks RB, QB, WR or something like that (the way they rank) so I figued I'd jump on the packers before anyone else Plus, I love Gannon ... this dude is insanely accurate mostly because of the short-passing game Oakland likes to play ... completion rates are very good and he just can't miss (with the exception of the last Supa bowl of course ) The other thing is, a good kicker can often get you a TON of points in these fantasy leagues... much more than a TE or a bad WR (2nd- or 3-rd string) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

vava Posted August 24, 2003 Report Share Posted August 24, 2003 Not the same Faulk (Marshall is the other one) - this one's Kevin Faulk and he'll be solid as a backup to your to RBs Taylor & Lewis - Taylor's currently injured with a bone bruise (! - i wonder why?) And Lewis is solid. Both rushed for over 1300 Yds last season. I would probably play Faulk and bench your RB/WR - Mack who starts for Houston, one of the worst rushing offenses in the league last year (2nd last), Your QBs good, but not always consistent. Brown and Johnson will oth be decent WRs, although Johnson is playing with an uproven QB on a poor offense. Finally, your defemse (the Ravens) was a middle of the pack D last year - better than mine anyway... Looks like an OK team if they stay healthy. Keep track of injured players and play your backups if your starters are hurt (people on the bench get no points - and well, injurted players who don't play - well you get the idea...) Good luck.
