  • 3 weeks later...

I am writing a paper on domestic violence in the Armenian immigrant community. This paper is milking me dry emotionally (I did this once about dom. violence in general and it was pretty painful, and I had to go and do this again about Armos, voluntarily too!!!!). I'm going through all these court cases and the testimonies and experiences of women who were victims of domestic violence and it's just too darn difficult to accept that they're all Armenian!!! MY-GODD!! The paper itself is a breeze to write, it's the subject matter that's killing me.

A little quiz for all of you who know Armenian: who knows the phrase for "domestic violence" most frequently used in the Armenian language? Anyone? No dictionaries, please. Let's see if anyone knows this off the top of their head.

I think I fractured my foot this morning

I know this pain; it's the same kind of pain I felt when I fractured it some years back on the day of my friend's sweet sixteen party and still danced all through the evening...hurt like hell though....hurts like that now...worst part of it is i have no time to go to a doctor till thursday...lol

Can you imagine someone having twins and naming the babies Syphilis and Gonorrhea ? Well it actually happened. I thought our instructor was trying to grab our attention (I for one was reading a magazine ) but she was dead serious. A woman had come in to apply for public assistance and she had named her babies ... lol You really gotta be wacked to do something like that.

Having received our "child abuse" training, the girl sitting in front of me remarked "Isn't that child abuse?" I would think that's emotional abuse (a form of child abuse). Can you imagine going to school with such a name? It turned out - it's not abuse at all. The woman has the right to name her babies whatever she pleases and they have the right to change their name when they grow up ...

Gayancho, I wish you a quick recovery. How did you manage to fracture it anyways? Were you sleep-walking?

Aneta, I'm curious, what was the child abuse training for? Are you interested in working with kids?

Well, it being finals week and all, I'm really tired. And when I'm extremely tired, my balance and coordination (usually exceptional) are all off. So that's how I fractured it

Dragon, tell me about it...it's such beautiful weather out, and I have to sit and write papers...ughhh!...lol, it's frustrating.

Listening to the soft melodies of Djivan Gasparian...wishing I had known my grandfather (died when I was a year old, and supposedly one of the last true armenians according to my mother). Something about the sound of the Duduk that always makes me want to cry....for some reason I always feel like this kind of music was his music...

I too, find the duduk sad. However, I've recently begun to find it "cleansing". I know, I know, that sounds fruity, but that's the only way I can decribe it.

My grandfather's music was the kef-time sounds. Hence my love for it.

I AM interested in working with kids. Eventually I will have my own kindergarten I think But the training is for my current position as a social worker (working with welfare recepients). We are mandated to report child abuse, elder abuse and domestic violence.

Note for the day:
As I parked my car to get back to work (after lunch) I noticed the "ticket-lady" issuing citations to couple of the vehicles parked at the metered parking spaces (two of them had expired, one had 2 mins left). So I took out my wallet and dropped coins in the meters (simple humanitarian act). She could not give me a citation could she? But she did approach me and ask "Do you know these people?" To which I answered "Maybe I do, maybe I don't. Does it matter?" She just smiled and drove off. Nice "ticket-lady"

Beautiful autumn isn't it? Just look out the window LA residents !!!

Saw "the widow of saint pierre" last night starring juliet binoche (french film)...i love that actress, she has a subtle intensity to her persona... excellent actress, doesn't need to throw a melodramatic fit to convey any emotion... subtly powerful...

but anyway, as you might expect, it's not exactly a happy movie...the movie has just ended, credits are rolling, and the guy right behind me dares to say in this scornful, indignant tone, "they could have at least had a happy ending" ... i turned to him and informed him he had the IQ of his shoe...people like that annoy me...i can't stand incompetence; the guy completely missed the entire point of the movie....god it annoyed me...

(sorry, had to vent...lol)

the movie itself is excellent, i thought... so if you don't mind subtitles, it comes highly recommended, both by the critics and by yours truly

And he just sat there, quietly, saying nothing ... yeah right.

It's not even a matter of "incompetence" but rather preferances. Some very intelligent and "competent" (whatever that means to you) people I know don't like sad movies. So don't judge people, please.

Hear, hear! Why do people want to leave the theatre feeling worse than when they walked in??? BTW, every movie I watch doesn't have to have a happy ending, though.

Aneta, it IS a matter of IQ and competence. I don't have a problem with people liking happy movies; they can LIKE whatever they please. BUT, the guy at the movies should be able to COMPREHEND that this type of a movie requires a sad ending (you can't always have a happy ending, it's matter of aesthetics, really). This is where the IQ and competence come in. The guy had such a narrow world view that he thought every movie should have a happy ending. That's what annoyed me. (lol, by the way, he did just sit there and keep quiet...I think he decided against messing with me after he took a look at my companion...lol)

By the way, what's with "don't judge people"? I can judge anyone I like for whatever reason I like. I, for one, don't subscribe to that politically correct nonsense of being "nice" to everybody, even the last idiot on the street. I think it's human nature to be judgemental and it's rather hypocritical not showing it. Therefore, I'll "judge people" all I want.

Kapish?...lol

See, you should have stopped here.

This is BS. IQ has very little to do with the type of movies people like. Some people don't even like movies but have very hight IQ-s (whatever that's worth). Some HyeForum members chan vouch for that.

Too bad you don't realize that its not a matter of being "nice" ... it's just a matter of "holding your tongue" when necessary. You can be judgemental, but you can't blurt it all out. Then you leave the impression of a pompous "know-it-all" which you are not (I hope you will not differ on this). Just keep one thing in mind - a lot of people can be judgemental of you, but they reserve enough tact not to shoot their tongue around. Being honest and straightforward is great ... but you also need to be diplomatic. Refrain from insulting people. I appologize if I have insulted you in any way with this post. I have tried not to.

Hypocritical ... Let's not even go there ...

By the way, I don't care who your companion was (he could have been Arnold Swarzie) ... nobody would tollerate such a comment People get pissed when you tell them to keep quiet in the theater. He he he ...

Ciao
(no hard feelings)

Aneta, I would appreciate it, if you could, from now on, refrain from telling me what to do or how to act. Notice I do not do the same to you (although the opportunities have been there)

If you have any more unsolicited "advice" to give, be kind enough to email me, call me, or send a message.
