ED
I have never understood, nor will I ever understand how, or actually WHY odars, such as yourself, leave their own culture and come into the Armenian culture.Does this mean I can’t go to the house of blues? Sometimes I get amazed to mentality of some people, it’s not new but I simply can’t accept this stereotype approach. you need to take a good look inside, and tell us what you mean by your own culture!! Sip
How do you disown your own culture so easily ? I think the fundamental problem with that statement (in my opinion of course) is that getting immersed in a new culture doesn't necessarily mean "disowning" another. Cultures is not something well defined and mutually exclusive (with respect to other cultures). You can be multi-cultural and still very balanced
Azat
I can't believe this thread is still going. Is it really that big an issue that we have devoted some 9 pages or responses to it?
Sip
I still maintain that this thread just revolves around a "big list" of posts. What .. was it like page 4 that this came up?

hyebruin
i think it's because the whole thing is such a big taboo in the armenian culture, and people like to talk about taboo topics!! vs. discussing more mundane stuff!! though i know some people are really adamant about those issues as well!!! ~~~you guys know what i'm talking about! it's the ultimate 'no-no'...can get more controversial than....you know! Nocturne
Stormy, It's not a matter of being "pleased" with the fact that an Armenian isn't "lost" but another is "gained" ohh, so sentimental. It's a matter of questioning the motive behind a person leaving their own identity and conforming to another. Edward, What's stereotypical? It's a fact, an African American man, has an African American identity, an African American past. ....oh, I'm glad I amaze you. yes, i agree, "disown" might be strong of a word. Yet, If one chooses to name his kids "Sevaq or Armond speaking Arevelkian Hayaren" and change his life around revolving the Armenian culture, then one leaves a part of himself. no one has to agree with me. everyone is entitled to their own opinion. sev-mard
Well the black skin I walk around in 'locks' me into my culture more than others whether I like it or not. I"m really deep into my 'culture' that being the overal history of african(s) and especially the Caribean where i'm from. I'm just personally able to mesh well with almost anyone I can come in contact in because I know and love myself so much, I can easily know and love others. When I was in Japan learning and speaking Japanese and speaking on topics such as black pride and black political views in Japanese, I didn't think I was giving up myself. Merely morphing and sharing myself. In this specific case, me naming my children Armenian names and having them speak armenian is a way to hopefully ease the already dramatic transition that will have to take place. Believe me, there is no disowning the black afro-carribean diasporic culture I have in me. I'm just able to blend and enjoy a never ending array of other cultures. Well haykakan culture could morph through my inclusion and spread to others(my family and friends other ppl i interact with) I will do the same, meeting and speaking with Hyes and them tripping off of what I have to offer, my views, emotions and feelings, and the fact that I took the time to learn as much as I could about your struggles and languages. Disowning my culture is the last thing that's taking place here, I'm evolving. Something more people could do if they thought it possible. As much as each person's personal culture is important to them, if people could allow themselves to glipse other's ppl cultures and learn about it, they'd see what I consider the most simply complex fact about Life. "Human's are the same in different ways, and our different ways are very similar sometimes." Peace Edited October 13, 2003 by sev-mard

vava
Well, I was just catching up on this thread (a thread, that I might add, I had previously decided to avoid) and so, I post: Sev-mard, I would like to cordially invite you into our community and culture. You may find it tumultuous and difficult at times, and some of our people down right impossible. But at least, we're (mostly) always sincere. You are most welcome - and we are happy you are here. Good luck with your relationship - hopefully in a few years, we'll see Armond popping in here as well...

ab134
Well, let me think...nice skin, nice teeth, nice lips, masculinity and the list goes on. Armenians seem to have something against everyone. Perhaps if most of them didnt grow up in a bubble they would realise that amongst every kind of people there is the good and the bad. We are not excluded from this group of people. People are people and it is possible for any one person to be attracted to another whether they are Armenian or not. Anoushik
As I was "conditioned" from my upbringing to just have relationships with Armenian guys, I only find myself attracted to Armenians. But I think black guys in general are very good looking. They have very beautiful, well-defined facial structure and big, sorrowful eyes that seem to look right into you.
ab134
How can you be 'conditioned' by anyone to be attracted to one type of person? My parents also have wanted me to only be with Armenians but as I have grown up with all different cultures around me, I can see that it is impossible to decide who you will be attracted to. Precisely my point about living in a bubble.
