hagopn
This is good news! Is that going to be used for food and supplies soon? Sometimes I get my cousins on Skype, and they were telling me that the west part of Haleb was still blocked off last week. How are you and your family doing? Is there food in the markets? Is it safer now to be outside?

We now have a "leftist anti-war democratic candidate who hates war" but makes even more war. Let's also go beyond personages and parties. They don't exist except on paper and meaningless ballots (since there is rarely an alternative choice on the ballot). Yervant1
18:25 22/10/2013 » Society Kurdish rebels threaten new fight in Turkey as Syria clashes intensifyKurdish rebels are ready to re-enter Turkey from northern Iraq, the head of the group's political wing said at his mountain hideout, threatening to rekindle an insurgency unless Ankara resuscitates their peace process soon, Reuters reported.Accusing Turkey of waging a proxy war against Kurds in Syria by backing Islamist rebels fighting them in the north, Cemil Bayik, a founding member of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) told Reuters the group had the right to retaliate.Syria's civil war has complicated Turkey's efforts to make peace with Kurdish militants, but Ankara strongly denies backing any rebel faction against Kurds in Syria and has held regular talks with the head of a Syrian Kurdish group close to the PKK.Bayik, the group's most senior figure at liberty, spoke at a small, heavily guarded house in the Qandil Mountain range in Iraq's Kurdish north, a badge featuring jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan pinned to a pocket on his guerilla uniform."The process has come to an end," Bayik said in the interview, which took place on Saturday. "Either they accept deep and meaningful negotiations with the Kurdish movement, or there will be a civil war in Turkey."As prerequisites, Turkey must improve the conditions in which Ocalan is being held and deal with him on equal terms, guarantee amendments to the constitution and enlist a third party to oversee any further steps in the process, he said."Now we are preparing ourselves to send the withdrawn groups back to North Kurdistan if the government does not accept our conditions," said Bayik, who shares his position with a female militant. He said the direction of the process would become clear "in the coming days." Source: Panorama.am
Yervant1
09:47 22/10/2013 » Interviews ‘Enemies may want to create anarchy in Syria’Eugene Michael Jones, editor of the Culture Wars Online Magazine from Indiana, has joined Press TV to discuss the upcoming Geneva conference on Syria.- This Geneva II Conference was hyped up, there is a lot of riding on this conference so to speak. Why do you think that they are not even being able to fix a date?- Because they do not know who the opposition is, or another way of saying is, they do not want to let the world know who the opposition is; because, I think, what you are talking about here, is not a group of Syrians who have a specific list of grievances that they can present and which could be negotiated, but rather you have an international group of basically hired guns, mercenaries, at the top, acting according to a totally destructive and alien philosophy and the foot soldiers are basically people recruited from the refugee camps, who are given an AK47, a 100 dollars a month and a packet of cigarettes. Now, this is not a credible opposition. That is, I think the problem that they face.- Well, speaking of which, then if this conference is even held, who is going to attend it from the side of the “opposition”? And can any agreement be even enforced?- Well, the opposition was created by the United States, by Saudi Arabia and by Qatar. So they are the people who are the puppeteers and they will have to point the puppets to speak for them. How can this happen if one of the first things that John Kerry does when he become secretary of state is refuse to give this people heavy weapons, because he does not trust them. So how are you going to have negotiations if the puppeteers do not trust the puppets? How is the other side supposed to trust them as representative of any significant group of the Syrian people?- And yet these puppets, as you call them, are still getting funding, they are still getting some sort of arms to fight the government of Bashar al-Assad. That again takes away the incentive to come and sit on the negotiating table. Won’t you agree?- Yes, I think that there was a sea change in world politics over September, over that weekend in September, when the Pope held the prayer vigil and then Obama decided to go with the Putin thing, and then [iranian President Hassan] Rouhani showed up at the United Nations, and then Benjamin Netanyahu threw his hissy fit after that.So it is a situation now, where they cannot win, but maybe the next strategy is just to create anarchy there so that Syria cannot pose any type of significant threat to Israel. That may be plan B.- And very quickly if you can, do you think that would work?- No! Source: Panorama.am

The statue was cast in Armenia. AN ARMENIAN JESUS RISES OVER SYRIA EurasiaNet.orgOct 21 2013 October 21, 2013 - 9:57am, by Giorgi Lomsadze A colossal, bronze Jesus Christ, cast in Armenia, has appeared inwar-ravaged Syria "to save the world." Soaring higher than Rio's famous Christ the Redeemer, the statue stands39 meters tall in the mountaintop, Byzantine-era Cherubim Monastery, lording it over the city of Saidnaya, 27 kilometers north of Damascus,Armenian news outlets reported. Some Russian outlets said that thestatue is one meter shorter than its Brazilian counterpart. >From its vantage point above the sea, the statue overlooks an historicpilgrimage route from Istanbul to Jerusalem. The statue, created byArmenian sculptor Artush Papoian, was installed on October 14, whenOrthodox Christians celebrate a commemoration of the Virgin Mary, whose icon is a chief draw for the monastery. But the statue was not born of recent events in Syria. While Syria'sethnic Armenian population has been fleeing the country in droves-- including to Armenia itself, which has built a "New Aleppo" toaccommodate the arrivals -- the project has been in the works since2005, Russia's Komsomol'skaya Pravda reports. Backed by the Russian government (which has a navy base on Syria'sMediterranean Sea coast, and, as we all know by now, takes an activeinterest in matters Syrian), along with the Russian Orthodox Church, the project, billed "I have come to save the world," was supposedlythe brainchild of one Yuri Gavrilov, a 49-year-old Moscow native whoruns an organization in London called the St. Paul and St. GeorgeFoundation. "We hope that this sculptural composition brings peace and loveto the hearts of people, and that our work will help restore peaceand calm in this long-suffering region," the Foundation's director,Samir el-Gadban, told Komsomol'skaya Pravda. http://www.eurasianet.org/node/67652
Yervant1
13:54 26/10/2013 » Society Kurds rout Syria jihadists on Iraq borderFierce clashes raged Saturday after Syrian Kurds seized from jihadists a crossing on the Iraqi border, a key supply route for weapons and fighters in the 31-month war, AFP reported, citing activists.UN and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi meanwhile was due to visit Iran as he presses efforts to build a consensus for a Geneva conference aimed at ending the conflict that has killed tens of thousands.Fighters from both sides were killed in the border clashes, which came a day after Syria's government and its opponents traded blame for a car bomb attack on a mosque that left dozens dead. The Kurds "took control of the Al-Yaarubia border crossing with Iraq at dawn after clashes with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, the Al-Nusra Front and other rebels," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, citing activists. The Kurds have been struggling to carve out an autonomous northeastern region similar to one in northern Iraq, further complicating the Syrian war.The seizure of the border post was another reported blow for the Islamists after Syrian state television said on Friday that Al-Nusra's leader, Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, had been killed, but the Al-Qaeda-linked group said he was in good health. Yervant1
The Associated PressNovember 2, 2013 Saturday 02:14 PM GMTIn midst of Syrian war, giant Jesus statue arisesBy DIAA HADID, Associated PressBEIRUTIn the midst of a conflict rife with sectarianism, a giant bronzestatue of Jesus has gone up on a Syrian mountain, apparently undercover of a truce among three factions in the country's civil war.Jesus stands, arms outstretched, on the Cherubim mountain, overlookinga route pilgrims took from Constantinople to Jerusalem in ancienttimes. The statue is 12.3 meters (40 feet) tall and stands on a basethat brings its height to 32 meters (105 feet), organizers of theproject estimate. That the statue made it to Syria and went up without incident on Oct.14 is remarkable. The project took eight years and was set back by thecivil war that followed the March 2011 uprising against PresidentBashar Assad.Christians and other minorities are all targets in the conflict, andthe statue's safety is by no means guaranteed. It stands amongvillages where some fighters, linked to al-Qaida, have little sympathyfor Christians. So why put up a giant statue of Christ in the midst of such setbacksand so much danger?Because "Jesus would have done it," organizer Samir al-Ghadban quoteda Christian church leader as telling him.The backers' success in overcoming the obstacles shows the complexityof civil war, where sometimes despite the atrocities the warringparties can reach short-term truces.Al-Ghadban said that the main armed groups in the area Syriangovernment forces, rebels and the local militias of Sednaya, theChristian town near the statue site halted fire while organizers setup the statue, without providing further details.Rebels and government forces occasionally agree to cease-fires toallow the movement of goods. They typically do not admit to havingtruces because that would tacitly acknowledge their enemies. It took three days to raise the statue. Photos provided by organizersshow it being hauled in two pieces by farm tractors, then lifted intoplace by a crane. Smaller statues of Adam and Eve stand nearby. The project, called "I Have Come to Save the World," is run by theLondon-based St. Paul and St. George Foundation, which Al-Ghadbandirects. It was previously named the Gavrilov Foundation, after aRussian businessman, Yuri Gavrilov.Documents filed with Britain's Charity Commission describe it assupporting "deserving projects in the field of science and animalwelfare" in England and Russia, but the commission's accounts show itspent less than 250 pounds ($400) in the last four years.Al-Ghadban said most of the financing came from private donors, butdid not supply further details.Russians have been a driving force behind the project not surprisinggiven that the Kremlin is embattled Assad's chief ally, and theOrthodox churches in Russia and Syria have close ties. Al-Ghadban, whospoke to The Associated Press from Moscow, is Syrian-Russian and livesin both countries.Al-Ghadban said he began the project in 2005, hoping the statue wouldbe an inspiration for Syria's Christians. He said he was inspired byRio de Janeiro's towering Christ the Redeemer statue. He commissioned an Armenian sculptor, but progress was slow. A seriesof his backers died, including Valentin Varennikov, a general whoparticipated in the 1991 coup attempt against then President MikhailGorbachev. He later sought President Vladimir Putin's backing for thestatue project.Varennikov died in 2009.Another backer, Patriarch Ignatius IV, the Lebanon-based head of theGreek Orthodox Church of Antioch and All the East, died in 2012. Hehad donated the land for the statue, according to church officialBishop Ghattas Hazim.By 2012, the statue was ready, but Syria was aflame, causing theproject's biggest delay, al-Ghadban said.Majority Sunni Muslims dominate the revolt, and jihadists make up someof the strongest fighting groups. Other Muslim groups along with the10-percent Christian minority have stood largely with Assad'sgovernment, or remained neutral, sometimes arming themselves to keephard-line rebels out of their communities.Churches have been vandalized, priests abducted. Last month theextremists overran Maaloula, a Christian-majority town so old thatsome of its people still speak a language from Jesus' time.On Tuesday a militant Muslim cleric, Sheik Omar al-Gharba, posted aYouTube video of himself smashing a blue-and-white statue of theVirgin Mary.Al-Ghadban and the project's most important backer, Gavrilov, weighedcanceling it.They consulted Syria's Greek Orthodox Patriarch John Yaziji. It was hewho told them "Jesus would have done it."They began shipping the statue from Armenia to Lebanon. In August, while it was en route, Gavrilov, 49, suffered a fatal heart attack,al-Ghadban said.Eventually the statue reached Syria."It was a miracle," al-Ghadban said. "Nobody who participated in thisexpected this to succeed."Associated Press writers Raphael Satter in London and Albert Aji inDamascus contributed to this report. man
Russia would be crazy to let Armenia go out from its sphere of influence, that is No & No for Kremlin. Armenia becoming a member of the European Economic Union or Customs Union is of utmost important for Russia since an economic alliance will give strength and a bond to the military strategic alliance Russia has with Armenia. Armenia is very near to Syria (and to Iran) with whom Russia have future plans in the defense, military, economic and trade fields. Armenia is like a stepping-stone on whom Russia have to put its feet in order to walk over further south into Syria, Iran, (and of course Turkey, when Turkey turns naughty toward Russia. Georgia's alliance with the West has made the importance of Armenia to Russia paramount and Russia would be crazy to let Armenia go). I do not know who is this guy William Engdahl (except what is written under his YouTube interview to a Swedish radio, and which is reprinted below), his English has German or Swedish accent, he speaks about Syria, about Turkey, Russia and the Middle East in an analytical way which makes a hearer scratch his head wondering what he is talking about or where did he get his analysis from....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIdIHp1xYDARed Ice Radio - William Engdahl - War in Syria & ManufacturedPublished in YouTube on Sep 12, 2013William Engdahl is an award-winning geopolitical analyst, strategic risk consultant, author, professor and lecturer. Born in Minnesota, William Engdahl grew up in Texas. After earning a degree in politics from Princeton University, and graduate study in comparative economics at Stockholm University, he worked as an economist and investigative freelance journalist in New York and Europe. William will discuss the serious situation in Syria and the underlying reasons behind the expansion of the empire into yet another Middle Eastern country. He explains how a radicalized version of Islam has been created and used to manage the war on terror. Engdahl describes the dire situation in Europe, with mass immigration and radicalized Islam, causing much conflict and internal struggle. Finally, he outlines the bigger geopolitical chessboard and where he sees the pieces moving if a greater strike on Syria is initiated. Yervant1
18:31 15/11/2013 » Society Warsi: Christian minorities 'endangered' in Middle EastChristianity is at risk of extinction in some parts of the world due to growing persecution of minority communities, a minister has warned, according to the BBC. Baroness Warsi said Christians were in danger of being driven out of countries, such as Syria and Iraq, where the religion first took root.Syria's civil war and the instability in Iraq has seen many leave.Baroness Warsi said politicians had a duty to speak out against persecution and appeal for religious tolerance. In a speech at Georgetown University in Washington DC, the foreign officer minister - who also has responsibility for faith communities - said one in ten Christians were living in countries where they were in a minority. She told that the BBC that in some cases, Christians were being targeted for "collective punishment" by majority groups in retaliation for what they perceive as the injustices committed by Western powers."I am concerned the birthplace of Christianity, the parts of the world where Christianity first spread, is now seeing large sections of the Christian community leaving and those that are remaining feeling persecuted," she told Radio 4's Today."Tragically, what's happening is they are being seen as newcomers, being portrayed as an 'other' within that society, even though they have existed there for many, many centuries," she said. The Conservative peer said Christians were seen as "legitimate targets" over the perceived actions of their co-religionists."This concept of collective punishment and them being seen as agents of the West or agents of regimes is wrong," she added."We need to speak out and raise this with the countries where this is happening."Religious pluralism made countries stronger in a whole variety of ways, she said, from broadening the range of educational opportunities to injecting economic dynamism. Yervant1
Top Syrian rebel commander dies15:44 • 18.11.13A top Syrian rebel commander has died of wounds he sustained in an air strike on a rebel-held air base in Aleppo province on Thursday, BBC News reported, citing his group.Abdul Qadir al-Saleh, the leader of Liwa al-Tawhid, died overnight, a spokesman was quoted as telling The Associated Press.Abdul Aziz Salama, the brigade's political leader, had assumed overall command, the spokesman added.Liwa al-Tawhid is one of the main rebel forces in Aleppo and is estimated to have between 8,000 and 10,000 fighters. It was formed in July 2012 to unite the many separate fighting groups operating in the northern Aleppo countryside. Later that month, it led a rebel offensive on the city of Aleppo and took control of several districts. In January, Liwa al-Tawhid joined the Syrian Islamic Liberation Front (SILF), an alliance of Islamist groups which mostly recognise the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army but not the National Coalition.Saleh, a former businessman from the town of Marea, had been meeting other senior figures from Liwa al-Tawhid at the time of the air strike.Youssef al-Abbas, also known as Abu al-Tayyeb, died soon after the attack. There are conflicting reports about whether he was the brigade's intelligence or financial chief.Saleh and another senior figure, Abdul al-Aziz Salameh, were meanwhile rushed to a hospital in neighbouring Turkey. The opposition Aleppo News Network reported on Friday that they were in a "good condition".However, Saleh's subsequently died and was brought back to Syria for burial, Liwa al-Tawhid and activists confirmed on Monday."We declare the martyrdom of Abdul Qadir al-Saleh," a statement by the brigade said.Liwa al-Tawhid arrested 30 people suspected of being government informers following the strike."As an individual, he was very, very important, certainly in the Aleppo area, but increasingly as an individual that many in Syria felt represented the revolution," Charles Lister, an analyst at IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre, told the AFP news agency."He came from a humble background, was outwardly religious but was very open... and he maintained extremely good relations with almost all groups of all different natures."He said Saleh's death might "spur on the rebels to launch a counter-attack as the regime advances" on opposition-held parts of Aleppo.A week ago, Liwa al-Tawhid joined five other rebel groups operating in the city, including the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front, in urging people to "face up to regime attacks".Their joint statement said government forces backed by fighters from the Lebanese Shia Islamist movement Hezbollah, Iranian Revolutionary Guards and members of Abu al-Fadl Abbas, an Iraqi Shia militia, had launched a "fierce offensive to reoccupy" Aleppo.
