It’s coming: US finalizing plans for military strike on Syria

 

Two unnamed White House officials told the Associated Press that the Obama administration is still deciding on what Syrian targets will be attacked and to what degree during a military strike that now seems inevitable.

While the strike itself will be conducted only after the White House presents the public with what it believes is “undeniable” proof of chemical weapon use carried out by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, intelligence agencies and policy makers are struggling to decide what goals they hope to achieve by launching an attack.

One of the officials granted anonymity to speak to the AP said, "If there is action taken, it must be clearly defined what the objective is and why" and based on "clear facts.” Meanwhile, another official briefed on a potential strike told the Los Angeles Times that the White House may opt for an attack "just muscular enough not to get mocked," but one that wouldn’t be severe enough to warrant a response from Syrian allies Iran and Russia.

"They are looking at what is just enough to mean something, just enough to be more than symbolic," the Times quoted the source as saying.

President Obama said Wednesday evening he has not made a decision on whether to order a strike in Syria, although he said the US has concluded that the Syrian government carried out recent chemical weapons attacks near Damascus.

"We have not yet made a decision, but the international norm against the use of chemical weapons needs to be kept in place,” Obama said in an interview with PBS.

"If we are saying in a clear and decisive but very limited way, we send a shot across the bow saying, stop doing this, that can have a positive impact on our national security over the long term," he said, stressing a "limited, tailored" approach in Syria to avoid an open-ended conflict.

The US and its allies already have enough resources throughout the region to strike Syria at any moment. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said earlier this week that the American military “was in place to be able to fulfill and comply with whatever option the president wishes to take.” Once Pres. Obama authorizes a strike, he said, US forces were “ready to go, like that.”

 

The US Navy announced Wednesday it has added another aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf region. The USS Truman in the Arabian Sea has joined the USS Nimitz, in the Indian Ocean.

Leading White House officials have said previously that a strike will likely be launched with the use of American ships mobilized in the Mediterranean Sea, but Reuters reported that additional firepower could be called up from across Europe and Asia.

According to Reuters, the US may be assisted by a French aircraft carrier, at least one French submarine or ship and at least one British cruise missile-carrying nuclear submarine ready to deploy in the Mediterranean. Additionally, the US has F-16 fighter jets ready to fly over Syria and strike from the sky, and has air-defense Patriot missiles adjacent to both Syria’s northern and southern borders. NATO maintains Patriot missiles to the north in Turkey, and the US has an arsenal of their own to the south in Jordan left behind following a military exercise there earlier this year.

Between the US and its European allies, military bases in Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus and Turkey could all be utilized as well for the limited strike once it is officially ordered to occur.

On Tuesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said his country would use “all means available” to defend against a US strike.

"We have the means to defend ourselves and we will surprise everyone," he said Tuesday, according to the AP. "We will defend ourselves using all means available. I don't want to say more than that," he added.

'All for one and one for all' should be the battle cry if the West
goes to war against Assad's Syrian regime

If Barack Obama decides to attack the Syrian regime, he has ensured -
for the very first time in history - that the United States will be
on the same side as al-Qa'ida.

Quite an alliance! Was it not the Three Musketeers who shouted "All
for one and one for all" each time they sought combat? This really
should be the new battle cry if - or when - the statesmen of the
Western world go to war against Bashar al-Assad.

The men who destroyed so many thousands on 9/11 will then be fighting
alongside the very nation whose innocents they so cruelly murdered
almost exactly 12 years ago. Quite an achievement for Obama, Cameron,
Hollande and the rest of the miniature warlords.

This, of course, will not be trumpeted by the Pentagon or the White
House - nor, I suppose, by al-Qa'ida - though they are both trying
to destroy Bashar. So are the Nusra front, one of al-Qa'ida's
affiliates. But it does raise some interesting possibilities.

Maybe the Americans should ask al-Qa'ida for intelligence help -
after all, this is the group with "boots on the ground", something
the Americans have no interest in doing. And maybe al-Qa'ida could
offer some target information facilities to the country which usually
claims that the supporters of al-Qa'ida, rather than the Syrians,
are the most wanted men in the world.

There will be some ironies, of course. While the Americans drone
al-Qa'ida to death in Yemen and Pakistan - along, of course, with the
usual flock of civilians - they will be giving them, with the help
of Messrs Cameron, Hollande and the other Little General-politicians,
material assistance in Syria by hitting al-Qa'ida's enemies. Indeed,
you can bet your bottom dollar that the one target the Americans will
not strike in Syria will be al-Qa'ida or the Nusra front.

And our own Prime Minister will applaud whatever the Americans do,
thus allying himself with al-Qa'ida, whose London bombings may have
slipped his mind. Perhaps - since there is no institutional memory left
among modern governments - Cameron has forgotten how similar are the
sentiments being uttered by Obama and himself to those uttered by Bush
and Blair a decade ago, the same bland assurances, uttered with such
self-confidence but without quite enough evidence to make it stick.

In Iraq, we went to war on the basis of lies originally uttered by
fakers and conmen. Now it's war by YouTube. This doesn't mean that
the terrible images of the gassed and dying Syrian civilians are
false. It does mean that any evidence to the contrary is going to have
to be suppressed. For example, no-one is going to be interested in
persistent reports in Beirut that three Hezbollah members - fighting
alongside government troops in Damascus - were apparently struck down
by the same gas on the same day, supposedly in tunnels.

They are now said to be undergoing treatment in a Beirut hospital. So
if Syrian government forces used gas, how come Hezbollah men might
have been stricken too? Blowback?

And while we're talking about institutional memory, hands up which
of our jolly statesmen know what happened last time the Americans
took on the Syrian government army? I bet they can't remember. Well
it happened in Lebanon when the US Air Force decided to bomb Syrian
missiles in the Bekaa Valley on 4 December 1983. I recall this very
well because I was here in Lebanon. An American A-6 fighter bomber
was hit by a Syrian Strela missile - Russian made, naturally - and
crash-landed in the Bekaa; its pilot, Mark Lange, was killed, its
co-pilot, Robert Goodman, taken prisoner and freighted off to jail
in Damascus. Jesse Jackson had to travel to Syria to get him back
after almost a month amid many cliches about "ending the cycle of
violence". Another American plane - this time an A-7 - was also hit
by Syrian fire but the pilot managed to eject over the Mediterranean
where he was plucked from the water by a Lebanese fishing boat. His
plane was also destroyed.

Sure, we are told that it will be a short strike on Syria, in and
out, a couple of days. That's what Obama likes to think. But think
Iran. Think Hezbollah. I rather suspect - if Obama does go ahead -
that this one will run and run.

REPORTS ABOUT GRABBING PROPERTY BELONGING TO CHRISTIANS IN SYRIA ARE PARTLY TRUE - JIRAIR REISIAN

ALEPPO. - The reports saying that Syrian opposition armed groups
decided to assign property belonging to Christians are partly true,
Jirair Reisian of the National Primacy of Aleppo of the Armenian
Apostolic Church told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Reisian noted that Syrian opposition is comprised of different
groups representing radical, very radical and moderately radical
organizations.

Radical groups may assign the property because of religious motives
or based on ideas of radical spiritual leaders.

"However, one can not generalize and say that all opposition groups
are grabbing the property of Christians. Some people are simply trying
to take advantage of the situation," he said.

According to rumors, Syrian rebels decided to assign property belonging
to Christians, including Armenians residing in Syria. In Aleppo the
armed groups grabbed 200 factories belonging to Christians.

They are mainly selling goods to Turkey to buy weapons.

The Arab Spring and the Armenian Winter Editorial | August 29, 2013 11:00 am By Edmond Y. Azadian The political turmoil artificially created in the Arab and Muslim world has come to be named euphemistically as the Arab Spring, as if promising a better future for the citizens of that region. Instead, political instability, economic collapse and bloodbaths have come to be associated with that spring. As one observes carefully, that “spring” visits certain specific countries, while others are bypassed. And that selection is based on the political orientation of the target country. The avowed promise of the “spring” is to bring democracy, human rights and freedom to the nations subjected to the breeze of that gentle season. For example, that “spring” never visits a country like Saudi Arabia — a most reactionary country where people’s limbs are chopped off based on antiquated medieval laws and women not only rank as second-class citizens but they are bought and sold much like cattle in marriage. In the same category are Kuwait and the Emirates where the majority of foreign workers are treated as slaves, while the ruling class enjoys obscene opulence. These are the darling allies of the US and enjoy the political epithet of “moderate,” truth notwithstanding. But the main reason that the breeze of that “spring” does not blow in their direction is because they are never perceived as a threat to our strategic ally, Israel. Thus, the rest of the Arab and Muslim countries are entitled to benefit from that “spring.” The Middle East correspondent of London’s Independent, Robert Fiske, has pointed out the irony of the Arab Spring, where a medieval despotic kingdom like Saudi Arabia is engaged in an open war to bring democracy to Syria, the only Muslim-majority country where political Islam has no place, or at least did not until hired mercenaries were sent to destabilize that strong, progressive, and yes, authoritarian country. Saddam Hussein of Iraq was the first victim of that policy concocted elsewhere in the West and exported to the most stable countries. This “democratization” campaign begins with the docile media, ridiculed by Mr. Fiske as the tentacles of their respective governments, be it the demonization of the targeted government or a particular ruler until the saturation point where poison and lies have convinced the public that that particular demon deserves to be overthrown. And then the international law becomes a caricature to justify the lawless actions of the powerful. All informed and participating agencies had certified that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction, yet the Bush-Cheney administration had decided to topple Saddam Hussein and make the first Arab country to serve as a political and military base for Israel Iraq (namely, in its current semi-autonomous Kurdish region). After one million casualties in Iraq, and 4,500 deaths in the US army and 50,000-60,000 permanently injured veterans to burden the US economy, the carnage is still continuing with the same intensity in Iraq and the US economy still struggles to recover from $3-trillion war damage. No one is questioning what happened to the “democracy” promised in Iraq. Only Saddam Hussein was sent to the gallows and the perpetrators of the war are still enjoying life in their bunkers and the Halliburtons of the world are reaping the booties of the war. Syria is next on the chopping block. No one had raised a voice to bring change in Syria — contrary to media fabrications. But the change was introduced in Syria at the butt of guns by mercenaries who have wreaked havoc. Despite coordinated aggression by Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordon, at the behest of the US president, Assad is still in power. The last chance to destroy that country hinges on the Tomahawk cruise missiles of the US Navy, amassing at this time in the eastern Mediterranean. Another country to “benefit” from the Arab Spring is Egypt, where a transformation is in the offing as the military tries to tame the violent Muslim Brotherhood. All these countries had served as a haven to the survivors of the Armenian Genocide. Armenian refugees flourished in these countries without discrimination and built affluent communities. Saddam Hussein protected the Iraqi-Armenian community. The churches, the schools, cultural and youth centers thrived through the government’s generosity. Making such public statements is anathema to the engineers of war but they are only the truth. Today, those churches, schools and businesses are the target of the vandals who were supposed to bring democracy to Iraq. As of this writing, the remnants of Aleppo’s affluent Armenian community are under the protection of Assad’s government, who had treated the Armenians as creative and privileged citizens of Syria. Should that government fall, Armenians would be the first target of the Jihadists who have put Aleppo under siege. Glenn Beck — otherwise the most unsavory of political commentators — circulated recently a graphic video and stated, “We are supporting cannibals.” At this moment those cannibals are at the doorsteps of each Armenian still stranded in Aleppo. The Syrian War has already spilled over into Lebanon where another affluent and well-established Armenian community is affected. Egypt was one of the safest countries in the Middle East, ironically, safer than even the US. Not any more. Blood is flowing in the streets and burglaries, kidnappings and rapes have destroyed the fabric of society. Many Coptic churches have been burnt down. The attempt to burn St. Gregory Armenian Church, on one of the main thoroughfares in Cairo, was not successful, but that does not give comfort to the Armenian community, as the Christians have become the unwanted minorities in the country, targeted by the very same seekers of “democracy” that the West supports. Many of those freedom seekers, after the dust settles, show themselves to be intransigent and hard-core fundamentalist Muslims that turn on their Western sponsors. The Arab Spring has only brought mayhem to the countries it has visited thus far. There are no organized Armenian communities in Libya and Tunisia, but those countries also have been destabilized, threatened with violence and fragmented. With the fall of the “Evil Empire,” the balance of the world power was destroyed and the Western countries have a free hand to “tame” the rest of the small nations by promising democracy and offering bloodbaths. Thus far, the “Arab Spring” has turned into the Arab nightmare. In the process, Armenian communities are destroyed. A century after the Genocide displaced Armenians once again are forced to join the ranks of the world refugees, abandoning their ancestral homes and churches, as well as prosperous businesses and affluent cultural life. Rebels admit responsibility for chemical weapons attack

Syrian rebels in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta have admitted to Associated Press correspondent Dale Gavlak that they were responsible for last week’s chemical weapons incident which western powers have blamed on Bashar Al-Assad’s forces, revealing that the casualties were the result of an accident caused by rebels mishandling chemical weapons provided to them by Saudi Arabia.

“From numerous interviews with doctors, Ghouta residents, rebel fighters and their families….many believe that certain rebels received chemical weapons via the Saudi intelligence chief, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, and were responsible for carrying out the (deadly) gas attack,” writes Gavlak.

Rebels told Gavlak that they were not properly trained on how to handle the chemical weapons or even told what they were. It appears as though the weapons were initially supposed to be given to the Al-Qaeda offshoot Jabhat al-Nusra.

“We were very curious about these arms. And unfortunately, some of the fighters handled the weapons improperly and set off the explosions,” one militant named ‘J’ told Gavlak.

His claims are echoed by another female fighter named ‘K’, who told Gavlak, “They didn’t tell us what these arms were or how to use them. We didn’t know they were chemical weapons. We never imagined they were chemical weapons.”

Abu Abdel-Moneim, the father of an opposition rebel, also told Gavlak, “My son came to me two weeks ago asking what I thought the weapons were that he had been asked to carry,” describing them as having a “tube-like structure” while others were like a “huge gas bottle.” The father names the Saudi militant who provided the weapons as Abu Ayesha.

According to Abdel-Moneim, the weapons exploded inside a tunnel, killing 12 rebels.

“More than a dozen rebels interviewed reported that their salaries came from the Saudi government,” writes Gavlak.

If accurate, this story could completely derail the United States’ rush to attack Syria which has been founded on the “undeniable” justification that Assad was behind the chemical weapons attack. Dale Gavlak’s credibility is very impressive. He has been a Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press for two decades and has also worked for National Public Radio (NPR) and written articles for BBC News.

The website on which the story originally appeared - Mint Press (which is currently down as a result of huge traffic it is attracting to the article) is a legitimate media organization based in Minnesota. The Minnesota Post did a profile on them last year.

Ron Paul: Al-Qaeda would benefit most from Syria chemical attack

 

Former congressman Ron Paul says the United States should avoid escalating its involvement in the Syrian civil war any further because the US will be on the way to aiding Al-Qaeda if it continues to assist opposition fighters.

“We are not really positive who set off the gas,” Paul, a long-time Republican lawmaker for Texas in the US House of Representatives, said during a Fox News interview filmed Wednesday about the reported use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“The group that is most likely to benefit from that is Al-Qaeda. They ignite some gas, some people die and blame it on Assad,” he said.

In the conversion with Fox host Neil Cavuto, Paul said Americans should avoid buying into any propaganda about the escalating war in Syria and warned that the repercussions of using military force could be tremendous, especially without enough evidence to justify an attack.

 

Instead of concentrating on the role of al-Assad and his reported use of chemical weapons on civilians, Paul said the US should investigate other factions in the Middle East. Of particular concern, he insisted, are the Al-Qaeda extremists who have aligned with rebel fighters to take on the Assad regime.

“The implication is that Assad committed 100,000 killings,” Paul told Fox News host Neil Cavuto during an interview filmed Wednesday. “There are a lot of factions out there, why don’t we ask about the Al-Qaeda? Why are we on the side of the Al-Qaeda right now? So I think they want the weapons. The rebels want the weapons. There’s a bunch of people in there and Al-Qaeda is part of it and this is the test for us to drop a couple of bombs and then send in weapons.”

“Assad, I don’t think, is an idiot,” Paul continued. “I don’t think he would do this on purpose in order for the whole world to come down on him.”

Paul said he opposed plans to strike Syria to reprimand Assad if intelligence proves he gassed innocent civilians, and that aligning the US military with anyone involved in the civil war was a big risk that could escalate quickly in terms of seriousness.

“What if there is an accident and 100 Russians get killed by our bombs? Who knows? Some type of unintended consequences. Wars always expand because of unintended consequences. They always provide short term war. Just think of all the promises over in Iraq: Short term; not much money; it’s over; we’ll get that oil. And don’t believe it,” he said.

“We should look at what’s best for America. And not trying to pick sides in an impossible war like this won’t be on the side of the American people. And the American people, by a very large majority, are opposed to this war. The Constitution can’t support this war and morally we can’t support this war, getting involved in a civil war and a strife that’s been going on in that region for thousands of years,” he said.

The congressman, a medical doctor who previously ran unsuccessfully for the office of US president, added that he thought the information about Assad being response for the chemical weapons is a “false flag.”

The US Department of State is expected to announce later on Friday the results of an intelligence report which may link Assad to a gassing outside of Damascus, Syria last week that killed hundreds of civilians. If the government can prove Assad responsible for the attack, the White House said a military strike was not out of the question. Meanwhile, the US has mobilized no fewer than five warships to the Mediterranean and is considering a number of military options that the White House said won’t involve putting any American boots on the ground.

US has no proof against Syria - Scott Rickard

Press TV has conducted an interview with Scott Rickard, former American intelligence linguist, about the statement from Russia that the US in bypassing UNSC would undermine international law and that their allegations against Syria show no logic.

- What is wrong with what the Russian leader is saying - If the United States is saying they have the proof then why don’t they show it especially out of respect for its partners?

- It’s clear that the United States does not have proof. The recent pull out by the UN inspectors, actually pulling out early and going to Lebanon, is clear evidence that the American military is preparing for a limited attack.

It will probably be by airborne-based missiles. Most of these systems are very easy for Americans to launch from as far as 900 miles away as well as some not-so-smart arsenal that they can fire from easily within probably 50-60 miles away.

So they won’t have to even over-fly Syria airspace to continue to basically fight against Assad as they’ve done over the past two years using covert warfare with the CIA.

So, clearly this is not about evidence of Assad using any kind of chemical weapons. This was a dog and pony show that was basically to fool the American people as well as people around the world.

Ali Hashem from Al-Jazeera recently quit his job because of complete misinformation coming out of that network.

- What does it mean - you said that they would probably do limited strikes. What can that accomplish?

- It’s clearly evident to the Americans and British and French as well as their allies in the Persian Gulf. They know that they cannot beat Assad using the mercenary warfare that they’ve tried for the past two years. So they are hoping to turn the tide and allow these mercenaries to be more successful.

And so I think they are just trying to use these strikes just as they’ve used strikes already out of Israel - three major strikes this year alone to weaken Assad’s forces. I think they are just trying to weaken Assad’s forces to give the mercenaries that they’ve hired a better chance.

- Well, there is outrage throughout the world as we see more and more regular people taking to the streets against this possible US action in Syria. How likely is it that the United States will actually not end up carrying out these strikes?

- I think it is very unlikely that they will not.

Unfortunately there are billions of dollars at stake for the American military industrial complex - over ten billion dollars alone annually just for the type of weaponry that can do these strategic strikes and what they call ‘limited strikes’.

By no means are these limited applications when it comes to the armament that they’re going to use. These strikes will be devastating to the individuals that are working at those sites, they call them basically combatants.

These are not combatants. These guys are not fighting against the Americans or their allies right now. These are innocent soldiers who are working to fight mercenaries that have been hired by the West and they are not combatants against the West.

Russia releases key findings on chemical attack near Aleppo indicating similarity with rebel-made weapons

 

Probes from Khan al-Assal show chemicals used in the March 19 attack did not belong to standard Syrian army ammunition, and that the shell carrying the substance was similar to those made by a rebel fighter group, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.

A statement released by the ministry on Wednesday particularly drew attention to the “massive stove-piping of various information aimed at placing the responsibility for the alleged chemical weapons use in Syria on Damascus, even though the results of the UN investigation have not yet been revealed.”

Russia warns of nuclear disaster if Syria is hit

 

A military strike on Syria could lead to a nuclear catastrophe if a missile were to hit a reactor containing radioactive uranium, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman warned. The remark comes as the US continues to push for a military strike on Syria.

"If a warhead, by design or by chance, were to hit the Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR) near Damascus, the consequences could be catastrophic," Aleksandr Lukashevich said in a Wednesday statement.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry urged the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to complete a risk evaluation as the US continues to seek support for military action. It asked the agency to “react swiftly” and carry out “an analysis of the risks linked to possible American strikes on the MNSR and other facilities in Syria.”

Lukashevich stated that the region could be at risk of “contamination by highly enriched uranium and it would no longer be possible to account for nuclear material, its safety and control.” He added that such material could fall into the wrong hands.

The IAEA said that it is aware of the statement, but it is waiting for a formal request asking the agency to complete a risk evaluation. “We will consider the questions raised if we receive such a request," Reuters quoted an IAEA spokesperson as saying.

The agency said in a report to member states last week that Syria had declared there was a “small amount of nuclear material” at the MNSR, a type of research reactor usually fuelled by highly enriched uranium.

Although this type of a reactor would not contain a lot of nuclear material, it would be enough to cause "a serious local radiation hazard" if the reactor was hit, nuclear expert Mark Hibbs from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace told Reuters.

The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted on Wednesday to approve President Obama's plan to strike Syria in retaliation against the alleged use of chemical weapons by President Bashar Assad’s regime.

Should Congress move to approve the president’s request, the US could soon initiate a limited strike on Syria.

On the other hand, Moscow needs convincing proof – not rumors - from UN experts that chemical weapons were used in Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with AP and Channel 1 on Tuesday.

“We believe that at the very least we should wait for the results of the UN inspection commission in Syria,” Putin said. He added that so far there is no information regarding exactly which chemical agent was used in the attack in the Damascus suburb, or who was behind it.

Russian destroyer enters east Mediterranean to head task force – report

 

A large anti-submarine ship named “Admiral Panteleyev” reportedly arrived in the east Mediterranean Sea to join the Russian standing naval force as flagship. It comes shortly before the scheduled rotation of two Russian landing craft carriers in the area.

The Russian Navy destroyer left the Far-Eastern port city of Vladivostok on March 19 and arrived in the designated area of the eastern Mediterranean on Wednesday, according to sources cited by Interfax and RIA Novosti.

 

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said that large landing craft carriers “Novocherkassk” and “Minsk” of Russia’s Black and Baltic Sea Fleets have been dispatched to the area, and will join the permanent Mediterranean naval force on September 5-6 in accordance with the earlier planned schedule.

 

A General Staff source told Itar-Tass that reconnaissance ship “Priazovye” also headed to the area to aid in monitoring the situation in the region.

 

A senior Russian Navy Main Staff source also told Interfax that guided missile cruiser “Moskva” will be the next vessel arriving in the Mediterranean to replace “Admiral Panteleyev” as flagship.

 

“Moskva” will arrive “in 10 days’ time,” the source claimed, adding that Russian Baltic Fleet destroyer “Nastoichivy” and escort ship of the Black Sea Fleet “Smetlivy” will also be joining the Russian naval unit “in the short run.” None of these claims have been officially confirmed.

The Defense Ministry has repeatedly stressed that the maneuvers are part of the “stage-by-stage rotation of warships and support ships of the standing naval force in the Mediterranean” and that the recent deployments are aimed at monitoring the situation in the region.

 

“This is a normal practice of any fleet in the event of rising tension in any given ocean or sea area,” Itar-Tass’s source said, adding that the Russian Navy will only be increasing its “complex monitoring” of the situation around Syria.

 

According to a ministry spokesman’s Tuesday statement, the key task of the Russian standing naval force in the Mediterranean is “comprehensive monitoring over the air, underwater, and surface situation in the zone of its deployment.”

 

Prior to the arrival of destroyer “Admiral Panteleyev,” the naval force consisted of landing craft carriers “Aleksandr Shabalin,” “Admiral Nevelskoy,” and “Peresvet,” RIA Novosti reports. It also included escort vessel “Neustrashimy” as well as a tanker and a tugboat.

 

As the Russian Navy’s moves sparked speculations in the media claiming that Russia is boosting its naval presence in the region ahead of a possible Western strike against Syria, defense officials said that one should not draw parallels between relocations of warships and the Syrian crisis.

 

“Our military presence in this region predates the Syrian conflict, and will continue after it, and so it would be wrong to draw any connection between the rotation of our ships in the Mediterranean region and events in Syria,” a senior Russian Navy source told RIA Novosti.
